Henry W. Brown Retired Farmer Dies
Henry W. Brown, 67, Rt. 4, Gallatin, died Saturday in Sumner Memorial
Hospital after a brief illness. Services were held Sunday at Alexander
Funeral Home with the Rev. F. L. Ray officiating. Burial was in Crestview
Memorial Park. Brown, a retired farmer, was a native of Jackson County,
son of the late joseph an Nancy Jane Nelson Brown. he was a Baptist.
He is survived by a son, a daughter, two brothers - Johnny Brown, Gallatin,
and Hardy Brown, Portland, Tenn. and four grandchildren.
Mrs. Herschel Moody, 72, Rt. 1, Portland, died Tuesday in Highland Hospital after a long illness. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. today at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church near Orlinda. The Rev. Ira Perkins will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body is at Wilkinson and Wiseman Funeral Home. Mrs. Moody, the former Grace Mathias, was a native of South Bend, Ind. She was a Baptist. She is survived by her husband, a daughter, sister, Mrs. Ethel Porter of Portland, three grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
James H. Hill, 88, died yesterday at Highland Hospital following a short illness. Funeral services will be held today at 2:00 p. m. at Wilkinson and Wiseman Funeral Home, with Rev. James Rowlett, pastor of the Methodist Church, of which he was a member, officiating with burial in Maple Hill Cemetery. Mr. Hill, long time resident of Portland, had been in the lumber mill business for many years. He was native of Sumner County, the son of Robert A. and Katherine Hodges Hill. Mr. Hill is survived by one daughter, one son, one sister, Mrs. Rus Troutt, Portland; and one granddaughter.
Westmoreland, Tenn.
William Brown, 93, a member of the Sumner County Quarterly Court for
36 years, died Wed., December 20 at Mattie's Nursing Home, Gallatin.
Services were held December 22 at Westmoreland Methodist Church.
Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Brown was a native of
Sumner County, son of Martin and Frances Nelson Brown. He was elected
to the Sumner County Quarterly Court in 1904 and served until 1940. From
1902 until his retirement several years ago, he was a merchant, building
contractor and lumberman in Westmoreland. For five years he was a mail
carrier in the Westmoreland area. He was a charter member of the
Westmoreland Methodist Church and was one of the organizers of the Farmers
and Merchants Bank. his wife, Mrs. Prudence Gilliam Brown, died in
1957. Survivors include five sons, Earl and Harris, both of Westmoreland,
Paul G. of Sanford, Fla., Seaborn W. of Hutchison, Kan., and Collins Brown
of Gallatin; three daughters, Mrs. Paul Fountain of Athens, Ohio, Mrs E.
M. Monchette of Birmingham and Mrs. Lee Martin of Gadsden, Ala.; a sister,
Mrs. Ovie Harris of Westmoreland; 21 grandchildren and 24 great
grand-children.
Bobby Donald Scott, 34 farmer of Route 4, Portland, died Sunday at his home of a gunshot wound. Sumner County Coroner Earl Bradley said Scott shot himself in the head with a 16 gauge shotgun. Services were held Monday at Harris-Donoho Funeral Home, Gallatin. Burial was in Old Brush Cemetery near here. Scott was a native of Sumner County, son of Mrs. Effie Mason Scott, of Portland, and the late Frank Scott. He was a Baptist. Survivors are three sisters and two brothers.
Sandy Y. Brizendine, 71, Portland barber, died Tuesday at his home of a heart attack. Services were held yesterday at Wilkinson and Wiseman Funeral Home. The Rev. Charlie Harper officiated. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery. Brizendine was a native of Sumner County, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lafay Brizendine. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Sarah Brizendine; a step-daughter and stepson.

Holly Denise Gregory, 19 month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ethridge Gregory of Bowling Green, Ky., died of cancer Saturday in Vanderbilt Hospital, Nashville. Services were held Monday at Wilkinson and Wiseman Funeral Home here. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery. The Gregory family lived here until moving to Bowling Green several months ago. Holly, who was born here, was stricken last September. Survivors, besides her parents, are four brothers, a sister, and grandparents.
James Alfred Chandler, 72 retired farmer of Mitchellville, died Sunday at his home of a heart attack. Services were held Tuesday at Mitchellville General Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Chandler was a native of Robertson County, son of James R. and Eunice Chandler. He lived in Sumner County in the Mitchellville Community for the last 30 years. Chandler was a member of the Mitchellville Church. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Pearl Stewart Chandler; two sons, Foster Chandler, Mitchellville, and Amon Chandler, Birmingham; four sisters, Mrs. O. T. Elmore, Mrs. Amy Webster, Mrs. Mary Butler, Mrs. Mary Butler and Mrs. Bennie Elemon, all of Springfield; and five grandchildren.
Clarence W. Kerley, 79, Columbia businessman, died Tuesday morning in Maury County Hospital after a short illness. Services were held yesterday at Oakes and Nichols Funeral Home. Dr. W. Clyde Martin, officiated. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery in Columbia. Kerley had lived in Columbia since 1936. He was senior partner in Kerley Furniture Co. He was a native of Simpson County, Kentucky, son of James Eldon and Mary Ella Harris Kerley. He married Edna McNeill of Mitchellville, Tenn., in 1907. She survives. Kerley started business as a partner with his father and two brothers in a store in Simpson County and later opened a store in Portland, Tenn. where he lived until moving to Columbia. Other survivors include a son, C. Allen Kerley, Columbia; a daughter, Mrs. DeWitt Viar, Columbia; two brothers, J. Vernon Kerley, Portland, and C. E. Kerley, Lewisburg, Tenn., and seven grandchildren.
Edward F. Ertner, 78, merchant of near Portland, died Monday at his home of a heart attack. Funeral services were held yesterday at Wilkinson and Wiseman Funeral Home in Portland. Burial was in Bohemian National Cemetery, Chicago, Ill. He was a native of Russia. He had lived in this country 70 years and in Portland 50 years. Survivors included his widow, Mrs. Bertha Hlad Ertner; a daughter, Miss Faye Ertner, Jellwood, Fla.; two sons Edward W. Ertner, Chicago and Dan Ertner, Gleridge, NJ; three sisters, Mrs. Lillie Burysek, Portland, and Mrs. Anna Akummer and Mrs. Mary Minnicks, both of Franklin, Ky.; a brother, Willie Ertner, Portland; and five grandchildren.
Jesse A. Escue, 75, retired farmer of Route 2, Bethpage, died Saturday in Chestnut Hill Sanitarium, Portland, after a long illness. Services were held at Liberty Presbyterian Church. Burial was in Mount Vernon Cemetery. Wilkinson and Wiseman Funeral Home in charge. Escue was a native of Sumner County, son of William and Lucinda Holmes Escue. He was a Presbyterian. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Carrie Perry Escue; a son, Jesse Escue, Bethpage; two grandchildren and a great grand-child.
Mrs. Rosie White, 76, of Cross Plains, died Tuesday at a Springfield, Tenn., nursing home after a long illness. Services were held yesterday at Barber Funeral home at Milldale with the Rev. Bruce Ousley officiating. Burial was in the Link Cemetery in Sumner County. Mrs. White was a native of Sumner County. She was a Baptist. She is survived by her husband, Bailey White, two daughters, Mrs. Estil Honeycutt, Orlinda, Tenn., and Mrs. James Groves, Nashville; a son Paul White, Lamont Community, and 13 grandchildren.
Services for Johnnie Troutt, 67, retired farmer of Westmoreland, were held Sunday at New Hope Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Alexander Funeral Home in charge. Troutt died Friday in Sumner County Memorial Hospital at Gallatin after a short illness. He was native of Sumner County, son of Wallace and Rosie Allsom Troutt. Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Silvie Graves Troutt; three sons Edgar and George Troutt, Westmoreland; Clyde Troutt, Indianapolis; two daughters, Mrs. Nellie Rippy, Gallatin, Mrs. Evelyn Troutt, Westmoreland; two half brothers, Walter and Arthur Troutt, Portland, nine grandchildren and four great grand-children.

Funeral services were held Saturday, January 20, at 1:00 p.m., for Mrs. Eva Susie Hunter, who died Friday at Giles Clinic in Gallatin. The funeral, held at Mt. Vernon Methodist Church, was conducted by Rev. Marvin L. Napier and W. D. Owens. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mrs Hunter was the daughter of Robert L. and Ella Sherron Simpson. Survivors are: one daughter, Mrs. Robert Reddick, Bethpage; one son, Robert D. Hunter, Old Hickory; three sisters, Mrs. Gertie Martin, Bethpage; Mrs. Alvie Fisher, Crawfordsville, Indiana; Mrs. Rosie Lee Parrish, Gallatin; and four grandchildren. *(Susie S. Edward Pickett (Ned) Alexander, 69, of Gallatin, retired schoolteacher and rural mail carrier, died Tuesday morning in Sumner Memorial Hospital . Services were held yesterday at Harris-Donoho Funeral Home. Charles E. Cobb officiated. Burial was in the Gallatin Cemetery. Alexander was a native of Macon County, son of the late Dr. M. N. and Betty Brockett Alexander. He was a member of the Church of Christ. He lived in Sumner County most of his life. He is survived by his widow, the former Daffo Herod; two daughters, five sons, a brother, Charlie Alexander, Bethpage, Tenn; a sister, Mrs. Maggie Clay, Nashville and nine grandchildren.
Joseph Bolivar Payne, 75, a farmer of near Orlinda, died Saturday in Madison Hospital. Services were held Sunday at Barber Funeral Home in the Milldale community. Burial was in Pleasant Hill Cemetery. Payne was a native of Robertson County, son of William and Alice Wright Payne. He was a Baptist. He as a Mason and a former tobacconist. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Annie Anderson Payne; a daughter, Mrs. Walton Link of Henderson, Ky., three sons, Douglas of Greeneville, Tenn. Guy of Murfreesboro and Joseph of Orlinda; two sisters, Mrs. Joe Richards of Orlinda and Mrs. W. H. McGlothlin of Portland, Tenn. two brothers, W. B. Payne of Orlinda and A. W. Payne of Springfield, Tenn; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

John L. Flowers, 78, White House carpenter, died at his home after a short illness. Services were held Tuesday at Cole and Garrett Funeral Home, White House. The Rev. Harmon Yates Jr. and the Rev. Oliver Jones officiated. Burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery Nashville. A native of Sumner County, Flowers had lived at White House 11 years. He lived in Nashville for many years. He was a member of Mount Pleasant Methodist Church. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. R. T. Jones, White House; and two brothers, James T. Flowers, Madison, and C. C. Flowers, Nashville.
Mrs. Gerald Wilkinson, 38, Rt. 1, White House, died Saturday in Highland Hospital, Portland, Tenn., after a long illness. Services were held Sunday at Barber Funeral Home at White House. Burial was in the Hillcrest Cemetery White House. Mrs. Wilkinson, the former Eula Mai Jones, was a native of Sumner County. She was a member of the Church of Christ. She is survived by her husband, a daughter, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Odell Jones, Cottontown.

Funeral services for Mrs. Cleveland Hughes, 71, of Portland were held Monday at the Alexander Funeral Home in Gallatin. J. B. Gaither officiated. Burial was in the Gallatin Cemetery. Mrs. Hughes died Saturday at Highland Hospital after a short illness. She was a native of Sumner County. The former Jennie Pearl Harris, she was the daughter of Willie and Ella Carter Harris. She was a Methodist. Survivors include two daughters of Portland, a sister, Mrs. Cora Tinch, Gallatin, and five grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Robert Brown, 84, of Portland, were held at 1:30 Tuesday at Boiling Springs Presbyterian Church. The Rev. J. M. Vaughn officiated. Burial was in Sherron Cemetery. The body was at Wilkinson and Wiseman Funeral Home in Portland. Mrs. Brown, the former Anna Roberts, died here Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. S. Butt. She was native of Sumner County, daughter of Green and Sarah Perdue Roberts. She was a Presbyterian. Other survivors include a son, Elmore Brown, Mitchellville, Tennessee, eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Mrs. Paul West entertained with a birthday dinner at her home on Lake Road to honor her husband on his fifty-third birthday anniversary Sunday. Dinner guests were Mr. and Mrs. Billy West, Bob and Bud West, Mr. and Mrs. Charles LInk and children, Mrs. Nannie West, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Fleming.
Mr. Walter Bailey has returned from Newsport, Ky. where he was called last week, due to the death of his uncle, Mr. Wilmer Collopy.

Funeral services for Ragsdale Walter Lane Sr., 85, Springfield garage owner, were held Monday at Barber Funeral Home at Elmwood Cemetery Springfield. Mr. Lane died Saturday night at Jesse Holman Jones Hospital. He was a native of Wilson County and was a member of the Woodland Street Methodist Church. He was the son of Ransom and Frances Griffin Lane and lived at Springfield for 40 years. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Viola Lettie Lane; a daughter, Mrs. Thomas Wynne Jr., Nashville, four sons, Everett Lane, Gadsden, Ala., Ernest and R. W. Lane, Jr., both of Springfield, and Joseph R. Mrs. O. C. Whiteside, 87, of Bethpage, died Monday morning in Gallatin Nursing Home. Services were held Tuesday at Bethpage Methodist Church. Burial was in Bethpage Cemetery. mrs. Whiteside, the former Minnie Moss, was a lifelong resident of Sumner County. She is survived by a sister, Mrs. John L. Harris, Adolphus, Ky.
Funeral services for William E. Tarrents, 79, retired Portland farmer, were held Tuesday at Wilkinson and Wiseman Funeral Home. Burial was in Hall Town Cemetery. Tarrents died Sunday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Bill Rogers, Cottontown. He was a native of Sumner County. Survivors include two sons, nine grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
Roy Stewart, 57, of White House, Tenn., died of pneumonia at 1:45 p. m. Sunday in Jesse Holman Jones Hospital, Springfield. Services were held Tuesday at Cole and Garrett Funeral Home, White House. The Rev. Harold Dean Smith officiated. Burial was in Hill Crest Cemetery. Stewart was born in Cortland, Ala., but had lived in White House 15 years. He was married to the former Esterlene Covington, who survives. Stewart was a Baptist. Other survivors include two daughters, four brothers, Fred Stewart, Madison, Alex Stewart, Caldwell, Idaho, Wiley Stewart, Spokane, Wash., and Eugene Stewart, Donelson; two sisters, Mrs. Bub Wallin, Springfield, and Mrs. Jimmy Minor, Nashville, and a grandchild.

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2:30 at Wilkinson and Wiseman Funeral Home for Michael Hillman Adkins, infant son of Dudley and Edith Adkins. Michael passed away at General Hospital in Nashville Sunday after a short three day life span. John Lindsey was in charge of the service. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery. He is survived by two brothers and two sisters.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilburn Empson were in Nashville Friday night due to the death of Mr. Frank H. Alley.
Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Johnson observed their 23rd Wedding Anniversary Tuesday.
Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Roney and Charlie of McMinnville, Tennessee gave a surprise birthday dinner Sunday, February 18, at the Cordell Hull Hotel in Gallatin to honor his mother Mrs. Lizzie B. Roney on her 80th birthday.
