Woman Hangs Self
Mrs. Grace Hawkins Vinson, aged about 40 years, committed suicide at her home in the Rose Hill section, five miles southeast of Red Boiling Springs, and about a mile of the Macon-Jackson County line, Thursday afternoon. She was found by her four-year-old grandchild and her husband, the child seeing her first. She had placed a piece of rope about a joist in her room, then mounted a small table and jumped to her death. Investigation showed that she had taken a bath, put on clean clothing and then took her life. No note was left, she not being able to write. However, she had evidently planned to destroy herself for some time, as her husband was not able to identity the piece of rope she used and which she had evidently kept hidden. On the day before taking the fatal step, she had finished churning when she informed her daughter that she would never churn again, the daughter paying no attention to the remark at the time. About ten years ago her mother, Mrs. Becky Hawkins, blew out her brains with a shotgun. It is said that her uncle and an aunt in Missouri had also committed suicide, the family having once lived there. Burial was made Friday afternoon in the Whitley Cemetery at Red Boiling Springs, following funeral services conducted by Elder Jeffie Clark. The deceased was a member of the Church of Christ for some time. She leaves her husband, Hardy Vinson, two daughters, Mrs. Alma Green of North Springs; and Miss Velma Vinson, who resided with her parents; two brothers, Dee Hawkins of Red Boiling Springs, Brady Hawkins of Detroit; and five sisters, Mrs. Dolphite Williams and Mrs. Fred Sloan, both of Red Boiling Springs, Mrs. Iubert Green of Russell Hill, Mrs. Oscar Hudson of North Springs, and Mrs. Hubert Kirby of Willette. The family had noted slight signs of mental derangement with Mrs. Vinson in the past, but her condition was not regarded as serious.
