Isaac Martin Short, son of Isaac M. Short and Polly Overby, was born in Sumner County, Tn. on 19 March 1824, died 8 December 1878.  He married Jennetty White on 16 August 1846.  Jennetty was the dau of William White and Sarah Tyler.  She was born 15 November 1830 (tombstone year; family Bible has 1832) died in Sumner County, Tn. on 14 May 1895.  Isaac and Jennetty are buried in the Short Dickens Cemetery, Sumner County.  Photo of Isaac Martin Short.  Photo of Jennetty White. • Jane Catherine Short, b 25 July 1847, d 11 Sep 1895, married James White Griffin in Sumner County on 20 October 1868.  James, (son of Hardy Bennett Griffin and Sarah Roberts), was b 17 March 1846, d 29 September 1896.  Jane and James are buried in the Friendship Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Sumner County.  Children of Jane Catherine Short and James White Griffin:

  1. Stephen M. Griffin b 2 September 1869 in Sumner County, Tn., d December 7, 1916 in Sumner County, Tn. Stephen married Idella "Della" M. Latimer in Sumner County, Tn. on October 12, 1890. Della was the dau of Daniel and Nancy Latimer.  Steve Griffin operated a grocery store in the Walnut Grove area in the early 1900's. Stephen and Della Griffin are buried in the Gallatin Cemetery.  Children of Stephen M. Griffin and Idella M. Latimer:
     • James D. Griffin b abt 1902 in Sumner County.  Married Elizabeth Dunaway after 1930.  She was b 1 December 1899, d 29 August 1932, burial in the Gallatin Cemetery.  James married 2nd to Mary Gearhiser, 9 June 1934 in Sumner County.
     • Ruby M. Griffin, b 29 June 1908, d 17 April 1994 married Roy L. Vantrease 30 March 1929 (Marriage Index). Roy was the son of Charles Leslie and Mary Vantrease. He was born 6 January 1907, d 19 June 2000.  Ruby and Roy had one son, Stephen L. Vantrease.  Ruby and Roy divorced and he married Gladys Barber, 15 May 1941 (Marriage Index).  It is unknown who Ruby remarried.  Photo of Ruby Griffin.

     The 1870 and 1880 census for James W. and Jane Catherine Griffin lists only Stephen M. Griffin. Family history from the Lee Short descendants say that James White Griffin and Jane Catherine Short had  2 other sons (possibly twins) that died young and were buried in the Short Dickens Cemetery. The two names listed below were given by Margaret Short Jones with the Short Bible information.

• Robert Wilson Short, b 29 August 1849 in Sumner County, d 6 February 1927 in Sumner County.  Wilson married Sarah Elizabeth Lamberth, dau of Henry Harrison Lamberth and Amanda E. Wilkerson.  Sarah Elizabeth Lamberth was b in Simpson County, Ky. on 4 August 1853, d 18 February 1929 in Sumner County, Tn.  Her mother died of a fever shortly after her birth.  Photo of Robert Wilson Short and Elizabeth Lamberth.      • Lillie Mae Short b abt 1904; married J. Turner Greer in Sumner County on 13 May 1922 (Marriage Index).
     • Luther Vernon Short, Sr. b 18 November 1906, d 13 January 1995; married Eva Mae Jackson in Sumner County, Tn. on 7 September 1929 (Marriage Index).      2. Harris Lee Short, b 1920, d 15 July 1944.  Married Frances Logan.  Robert died in France during WWII and is buried in the National Cemetery. Two children.  Obit of Pvt. H. L. Short.
  4. Augustus H. "Gus" Short; b 22 December 1880 in Sumner County, d 29 June 1932; married Ocy "Polly" Biggs in Sumner County on 7 November 1915 (Marriage Index).  Ocy was b 21 June 1894, d 8 October 1969 in Sumner County.  Gus and Ocy are buried in the Walnut Grove Cemetery.  Child of Gus Short and Ocy Biggs:
     • Paul Curtis Short, b 22 December 1931, d 22 November 1972, burial Walnut Grove Church Cemetery.
  5. James Arthur Short b 25 October 1883 in Sumner County, Tn., d 14 August 1921 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tn.  Arthur Short and Robert Underwood shot and killed each other. Married Missie Belle White, dau of John W. White and Harriet V. Lamberth, probably in Davidson County. (John W. White was the son of Charles White and Elizabeth Peak.  Charles White was Jennetty White Short's brother. Harriet V. Lamberth was the dau of Henry Harrison Lamberth and Martha D. Harper.  She was a half sister to Sarah Elizabeth Lamberth Short.) On the 1930 Davidson County, Tn. census, Belle Short was a widow, living with her brother William M. White.  Her mother Harriet White was also in the household. Arthur and Belle had no children.  Photo of Arthur Short.
  6. Daniel Eugene Short b 16 May 1885 in Sumner County, d 4 May 1955 in Sumner County.  Married first to Clara Mai Wilson, probably in Robertson County, Tn. Clara was b 26 February 1892, d 5 August 1931, the daughter of Eli and Margaret Wilson.. Daniel and Clara are buried in the Walnut Grove Church Cemetery. Clara and Daniel had no children. They were not located on the 1930 census. Daniel married second to Edna Griffin Hester, 27 March 1948.  Edna Griffin was married previously to Luther W. • Bennetta Harriett Short b 11 July 1851, d before 1900.  She married John Shackelford in Sumner County on 25 December 1873. John, son of John Shackleford and Eliza Farmer, was b 11 January 1855, d 19 October 1897. No children.  John and Harriett are buried in the Farmer Cemetery, Simpson County, Ky. • James William "Will" Short, b 1 March 1853 in Sumner County, d 11 November 1911 in Sumner County. Married  in Sumner County to Medora Ann White, dau of Robert M. White and Charity Paralee Huffman, on 22 December 1874. Robert M. White was Jennetty White Short's brother.  Medora Ann White was b 26 July 1854, d 8 August 1917.  Will and Medora Ann are buried in the Short Dickens Cemetery in Sumner County.  Children of James William Short and Medora Ann White:
  1. Oscar Short b 2 January 1876 in Sumner County; married Maggie Ray in Sumner County, Tn on 28 July 1895. "Bo" Short, 7 February 1928 - 8 November 2009, and Rosa Kathleen Witherspoon, 1923 - 1984.

     Clarence Short married 2nd to Estelle Booker, 22 June 1926 (Marriage Index) Clarence and Estelle divorced in 1927. No children. Clarence married 3rd on 8 July 1931 (Marriage Index) to Janie Harrison Legge, dau of Alex Harrison and Carrie Kelly. Janie was b 14 July 1898, d 24 March 1984. She married 1st to Blonnie Virgil Legge, Sr. in Sumner County on 27 April 1918. Blonnie was killed in France in October, 1918. They had one son, Blonnie Virgil Legge, Jr., b April 11, 1919, d June 10, 1985.  Clarence and Janie had no children together.  Janie is buried next to Blonnie Legge, Sr. in the Maple Hill Cemetery.   3. Maude Short b 23 November 1882, d 7 October 1924, married John C. Chambers in Sumner County on 4 February 1902 (Marriage Index). John was b 22 January 1875, d 16 April 1930. Children of Maude Short and John C. Chambers:
     • Rhoda May Chambers, b 29 June 1906, d November, 1973, married Harvey R. Harris in Sumner County on 1 May 1926 (Marriage Index).  Harvey was b 2 June 1907, d August, 1962. Both are buried in the Maple Hill Cemetery.
     • Anna Chambers, b abt 1914; married Robert Lee Colley.
  4. Hugh Short b 29 April 1885 in Sumner County, d 6 March 1913 in Sumner County.  Buried in the Short Dickens Cemetery.  Did not marry.
  5. Cleon Short b 14 January 1889, d 12 April 1980, married Beuna Link in Sumner County on 26 December 1914 (Marriage Index). Beuna was b 15 June 1897, d 30 January 1984.  Cleon and Beuna are buried in the Maple Hill Cemetery.  They had one son, still living.
  6. Odell Short b 8 August 1892 in Sumner County, d 11 October 1915. Burial in the Short & Dickens Cemetery. Never married. See Obit for Odell Short.

• Louisa Vera Short, b 31 January 1855 in Sumner County, Tn., d 16 March 1905.  Louisa married Leonard Davis Dickens in Sumner County on 14 June 1877.  Davis was the son of Dickson Dickens and Martha F. Bush. Davis was b 3 March 1856,  probably in Smith County, Tn.  His parents were married there in 1854 but by 1860 had moved to Macon County, Tn. Davis died 4 February 1928 in Sumner County.  He married 2nd to Adelia Bradley (who was previously married to Richard E. McGlothlin, Thomas Jefferson Crafton and James Hatler) in Sumner County on 21 January 1909.  They divorced in 1912. (See divorce)Delia resumed using her former married surname of Hatler until her death in 1963. Davis Dickens and Delia Bradley had no children. Louisa Vera Short and Davis Dickens are buried in the Short Dickens Cemetery in Sumner County, Tn.  Children of Louisa Vera Short and Davis Dickens:
  1. Leonard "Lennie" Harrison Dickens b 18 April 1878, d 7 February 1956, married 1st to Bertha Short in Sumner County on 4 January 1902.  Bertha was the dau of John Martin Short and Tennessee White.  (John Martin Short was Isaac Martin Short's nephew.  Tennessee White was Jennetty White Short's niece.)  Bertha b 24 March 1879, d 16 September 1904.  She is buried in the Short Cemetery, Sumner County.  Lennie married 2nd to Grace Short, Bertha's sister. Dickens, b 8 July 1907, d 20 March 1994 in Sumner County.  She is buried in the Maple Hill Cemetery.  She married 1st to Theodore Colley in Sumner County on 8 December 1923 (Marriage Index).  Theodore was b in 1895, d 1946.  Rosa and Theodore had two children, Charles and Corrine.  She married 2nd to Hubert  W. Denning.  Hubert was b 28 December 1919, d 18 March 2003.  See photo of Rosa and children, Charles and Corrine Colley.
     • Cora Dickens, b 5 October 1908, d August, 1980.  Married Guy Cope, (b 9 July 1979, d 9 May 1979) in Sumner County on 9 March 1940 (Marriage Index).

     Lennie Dickens was married 3rd to Ada M. Haase in Sumner County, Tn. on 19 December 1910 (Marriage Index).  Ada was b 10 December 1893 in Wisconsin, dau of Karl Fridrich Wilhelm and Marie Haase. Lennie moved his family to Hemphill County, Tx. aft. 1916.  He was living there in 1920 and 1930.  Ada M. Dickens died in Hemphill County, Tx. on 5 June 1978.  Lennie is buried in the Short Cemetery beside Gracie and Bertha.  Child of Lennie Harrison Dickens and Ada M. Haase:

     • Mary Lou Dickens b in Sumner County, Tn on 8 January 1916, d in Hemphill County, Tx on 29 May 1995; married Granville Shepherd in Texas.  Photo of Mary Lou Dickens taken in 1939.

     • Clara Hardin b 1 April 1906, d 14 February 1988.  Married Glennis Goostree in Sumner County on 21 May 1923 (Marriage Index).
     • Lucille Hardin b 12 June 1911, d 9 March 2003 in White House, Robertson County, Tn. married Lonnie Hunter in Sumner County on 17 December 1925 (Marriage Index).  Lonnie (b 9 Apr 1900, d 19 September 1969) and Lucille are buried in the Old Brush Cemetery in Portland.

     • Virgil Leemore Graves, b 19 January 1908, d in Michigan on 23 November, 1982. Married first to Nellie Ruth Jernigan, 22 April 1925.  They divorced and he remarried Mary Unknown. They moved to Detroit.
     • Elsie Evelyn Graves b 26 January 1911 in Sumner County, d 19 May 2001 in Nashville, Davidson County, Tn.  She married Edward Ward Empson in Sumner County on 30 January 1932 (Marriage Index).  Edward Ward Empson was the son of James B. and Mildred Empson.  He was b 8 January 1909 in Sumner County, Tn., d 16 December 2002 in Sumner County, Tn.

• Julia Ann Short b 10 August 1857 in Sumner County, Tn., d 29 May 1911 in Roosevelt County, New Mexico.  Married George W. (Marriage Index) Paul was the son of Thomas Jefferson Crafton and Sallie B. Austin.  He was b 23 June 1889, d 3 February 1954.  Ethel and Paul are buried in the Maple Hill Cemetery, Portland, Tn.

• Andrew Jackson "Jack" Short b 15 November 1861, d 10 March 1918.  Married M. Alice "Allie" Lucas in Sumner County on 30 November 1892.  Allie was b December 1866, d 22 March 1909. She was the daughter of John Lucas and Sarah Florence Mulloy.  Children of Andrew Jackson Short and Allie Lucas:

  2. Andrew Hershel Short b 8 August 1894; married Mary G. Unknown in Indiana in 1918/1919. He married second, in Indiana, to Lela Estelle Crafton, dau of Beulah Smart and Millard Austin Crafton.  Estelle was b 1 January 1916 in Sumner County, Tn., d in Portland, Tn. on 25 September 2000.  Martin and Estelle are both buried in the Maple Hill Cemetery. 
     • Harry J. Whitaker, b abt 1915.  Died in Indianapolis, In. in the mid-60's.  He married Helen Shaubert in Indianapolis. Two sons.
  4. Richard Johnson, b May 1894. Married Dorothy Unknown in Indianapolis, In. Moved to Arizona in his later years.

     • Living male Johnson, b abt. 1918.  Married Ruth Nimmo, dau of Adrian K. Nimmo and Vergie May Woodard. Ruth was b in 19 September 1919, d 30 March 1998. They had one deceased son, Ralph Johnson, b 1946, d 1965. Two living children.

     • Marjorie Johnson, b 28 June 1922, d 4 December 1922.  Buried in the Maple Hill Cemetery.
     • Horace Johnson, b 31 October 1923, d 25 March 1992.  Married 1st to Lovie Geneva Marlin, b 27 November 1921, d 14 September 1950.  Geneva was the dau of George W. Marlin and Ida Jane Wheeler.  Horace married second to Ruby Wheeler in Sumner County, Tn. on 9 February 1952.  Horace and Geneva are buried in the Maple Hill Cemetery.
     • Cecil Johnson b 19 August 1926, d 11 February 1927; buried in the Maple Hill Cemetery.
     • Margarette Johnson, b 12 June 1930, d 24 July 1934, buried in the Maple Hill Cemetery.
     • James Allen "Jim" Johnson b 18 October 1936, d 17 May 2006.
     • Living female Johnson, b after 1930. Married a Philips.

• America Drucilla Short, b 6 October 1865, d 10 February 1960.  She married Davis Bouregard Johnson, son of Benjamin J. Johnson and Phebe Jane Northam in Sumner County, Tn. on 20 September 1883.  Davis was b 29 November 1861, d 8 October 1944.  (See Descendants of Benjamin J. Johnson).   1. Martin Luther Johnson, b 13 October 1884 in Portland, Sumner County, d 1 April 1979 in Portland. Married Lela Mae Smart in Sumner County on 2 November 1910.  Lela was the daughter of James Marion "Jim" Smart and Nina Adella Belcher.  She was b 15 March 1892 in Sumner County, d 15 April 1989 in Sumner County.  Luther and Lela are buried in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Children of Luther Johnson and Lela Smart:
     • Guilford Martin Johnson, b 22 September 1911, d 16 March 1998. Guilford married Mildred Marie "Tis" Wiseman in Simpson County, Franklin, Ky. on 26 December 1932. Tis was the daughter of James William Wiseman, Sr. and Tempie Lane. She was b on 14 October 1915, d 22 March 2002. Guilford and Tis are buried in the Portland Memorial Gardens Cemetery. They had 4 children.
     • Garnett Odell Johnson, b 27 February 1913, d 25 September 1982. He married Barbara Louise Harris, dau of Rhoda Chambers and Harvey Harris, on 29 May 1946 (Marriage Index).  They had 7 children, 4 still living. 
     • James Davis Johnson, b 13 October 1918, d 9 July 2001. J. D. married in Allen County, Ky. on 20 February 1939 to Marie Durrett, dau of Leslie Davis Durrett and Cora Belle McMurtry. Marie was born in Robertson County, Tn. on 3 August 1921, d 21 February 2003 in Hillsborough County, Tampa, FL. J. D. and Marie are buried in the Portland Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
     • Winnie Lucille Johnson, b 15 July 1925, married Kenneth Bryan Lane in Simpson County, Ky. on 26 June 1943.
