James Gilliam was born about 1747-50 in Virginia. His parents were John and Sarah Farris Gilliam of Goochland County, Virginia. On December 16, 1772 in Goochland County, James married Francais Hopkins daughter of John and Susanna Hopkins. This marriage is recorded in Rev. William Douglas Register using the French spelling – Guillam.

James served in the Virginis Militia during the American Revolutionary War. He was sworn into service April 23, 1782 in Cumberland County, Virginia. James’s service record can be found in J. T. McAllister’s Record, Section 260, page 198 and John H. Gwatney’s Register of Virginians in the Revolution page 308.

In 1816 James and Francais along their neighbors Harrises, Meadors, Creaseys and others moved to Tennessee. Daughter Mary Gilliam Webb and husband Daniel Gary Webb bought land at the Head waters of Trammel Creek in Sumner County in 1815. James sons, Charles and John H. purchased land in Sumner County on May 18, 1818. James Gilliam died June 18, 1821 and was buried in the family cemetery near Westmoreland.
