Maine to Pennsylvania The following is the list of the 50 States with some important Census information, such as creation of Territory, Statehood, first available Census, and a list of what Census are missing. In 1760 the one County was divided to form three. 1800 missing York Co; 1810 missing part of Oxford Co; 1820 missing Washington & part of Penebscot Co. --------------- ------ ------ ------ ------------------------ Maryland 1788 1790 One of the original 13 states. 7th to ratify the Constitution. 1790 Census missing Allegany, Calvert & Somerset Counties; 1800 Census missing Baltimore Co. (except City of Baltimore) and part of Suffolk Co.; 1830 Census missing Montgomery, Prince George's, St. Mary's; Queen Annes, and Somerset Counties. --------------- ------ ------ ------ ------------------------ Massachusetts 1788 1790 One of the original 13 states. 7th to ratify the Constitution. 1800 Census missing part of Suffolk Co. --------------- ------ ------ ------ ------------------------ Michigan 1805 1837 1820 MI. became part of NW Terr. 1787; In 1800 the W. part of lower MI. and E. part of upper MI. became part of IN. Terr. In 1802 all of state was in IN. Terr. and thus remained until 1805 when MI. Terr. was created. Jurisdiction extended W. to the Miss. River, including Wisc. and E. Minn. (from 1818-36) --------------- ------ ------ ------ ------------------------ Minnesota 1849 1858 1850 Minn. became part of NW Terr. 1787; W. part was in the LA. Purchase of 1803. In 1800 E. part was in IN. Terr.; 1818 in Mich. Terr; 1836 in Wisc. Terr.; Thus remained until 1849; Wisc. Terr. also included the W. part of the state; The Minn. 1849 extended W. to the MO. River including much of what later became the Dakota Terr. --------------- ------ ------ ------ ------------------------ Mississippi 1798 1817 1830 MS. originally claimed by GA. Remained loyal to the British Crown during the Revolutionary War, but taken over by Spain btw 1789-91. Held by Spain until 1798. All of the S. 31st parallel was in Spanish W. FL. until 1812. In 1817 AL. was separated from Miss. Terr. 1820 missing All; 1840 missing Pike Co.; 1860 missing Hancock, Sunflower and Washington Counties. --------------- ------ ------ ------ ------------------------ Missouri 1812 1821 1830 N. part of LA. Purchase was made into MO. Terr. in 1812. Originally the Terr. included AR.; IA.; KS.; NB.; and OK. --------------- ------ ------ ------ ------------------------ Montana 1864 1889 1860 Most of the state was part of the LA. Purchase 1803; In LA. Terr. 1805-12; MO. Terr. 1812-54 NB. Terr. 1854-61; Dakota Terr. 1861-64; The extreme N.W. part of the state was in OR. Terr. 1846-53; Wash. Terr. 1853-63; Idaho Terr. 1863-64; --------------- ------ ------ ------ ------------------------ Nebraska 1854 1864 1860 NB. was originally part of the LA. Purchase of 1803; was part of MO. Terr. 1812-20 (no settlers until 1823) Was in Un-Organized Terr. 1820-34. In 1834 part of area was placed under jurisdiction of AR. part under Mich. and part under MO. When NB. Terr. was created it included parts of CO.; MT.; WY.; and N. & S. Dakotas (N. from 40th parallel to Canada & W. from MO. River to Continental Divide. Area was reduced to present size of state in 1861 with the creation of CO. and Dakota Terr. in 1861. --------------- ------ ------ ------ ------------------------ Nevada 1861 1864 1860 Land ceded to U.S. by Mexico in 1848. From 1850-61 NV. was part of the Utah Terr. except S. tip of state which was in NM. Terr. 1850-63, before AZ. Terr. was organized. --------------- ------ ------ ------ ------------------------ New Hampshire 1788 1790 One of the original 13 States. 9th to ratify the Constitution. 1800 Census, missing part of Rockingham and Strafford Counties 1820 Census missing Grafton, Strafford and part of Rockingham Counties. --------------- ------ ------ ------ ------------------------ New Jersey 1787 1830 One of the original 13 States 3rd to ratify the Constitution. Missing All Census 1790, 1800, 1810, 1820. --------------- ------ ------ ------ ------------------------ New Mexico 1850 1912 1850 This land was ceded to U.S. by Mexico in 1848, except for a strip of land which Texas had claimed (E. of the Rio Grande Rv) when NM. Terr, was created in 1850 it also included AV. and part of CO. (A small area in S.W. corner and a larger area now in AZ. were added by Gadsden Purchase of 1852. --------------- ------ ------ ------ ------------------------ New York 1788 1790 One of the original 13 States 11th to ratify the Constitution. 1810 Census missing Cortland Co. --------------- ------ ------ ------ ------------------------ North Carolina 1789 1790 One of the original 13 states 12th to ratify the Constitution. Included present-day TN. until 1796. 1790 Census missing Caswell, Granville and Orange Counties. 1810 Census missing Craven, Green, New Hanover and Wake Counties. 1820 Census missing Currituck, Franklin, Martin, Montgomery Randolph, and Wake Counties. --------------- ------ ------ ------ ------------------------ North Dakota 1861 1889 1860 ND. was originally part of the LA. Purchase, 1803. Later when Minn. Terr. formed in 1849 It included all of the area of ND. as far W. as the MO. River but was left in Un-Organized Terr. in 1859 when Minn. was cut to its present-day boundaries. As the Dakota Terr. was organized in 1861 it included both North & South Dakota and most of Wyo. and Mont. In 1864 Wyo. and Mont. separated to form Mont. Terr. A movement to divide the Dakotas began in early 1870's but was not legislated until 1889 when both became states. The 1860 Census is of the Dakota Terr. --------------- ------ ------ ------ ------------------------ Ohio 1799 1803 1820 OH. was originally part of the NW. Terr. in 1787 and was the 1st state carved out of the Territory. OH. began to function as a state in 1802. 1810 Census missing ALL. 1820 Census missing Franklin & Wood Counties. --------------- ------ ------ ------ ------------------------ Oklahoma 1890 1907 1900 OK. became part of the AR. Terr. in 1819, but the relevant history dates from 1866 when the Indian tribes ceded the W. part of their domain to the U.S. OK. land was not opened to white settlement until 1889. The Indian Terr. (abt the E. 1/3 of present- day OK. and was not officially organized but remained under the jurisdiction of AK. until state- hood in 1907. --------------- ------ ------ ------ ------------------------ Oregon 1848 1859 1850 Original Oregon Terr. embraced OR. all of Wash. & Idaho, British Terr. Columbia to 54deg 40', and Mont., & Wyo.
