 Cicero G. SURRETT - Shot & Killed
December 7, 1875 ~ Cedartown, Polk Co., Georgia
Our usually quiet town was startled on last Saturday night by the report about 9 oclock that a man was shot out on the Priors station road, near the Cedar creek bridge. It appears that a young man from Haralson county, Bud TURBYVILLE, had hired Cicero SURRATT, who lives about six miles from town, to pilot him around Cedartown with a whisky wagon. TURBYVILLE, agreed to pay SURRATT, a certain sum, and in the settlement got into a dispute about the amount, TURBYVILLE, refusing to pay the amount agreed upon. Immediately after the shooting, TURBYVILLE, mounted one of his horses and left. SURRATThad been drinking pretty freely during the day, and was in a drunken condition when shot. He lived until 3 oclock Sunday morning. He leaves a wife and eight children, in a destitute condition, we presume. The coroners jury found a verdict in accordance with the above facts.--
