Greenberry SURRATT, a27y when father John,4 SURRATT, died as was NOT listed in fathers Will & Testament of 3rd April 1830. Greenberry SURRATT, a27y and others was appointed by the Court Executors to dispose all property, which was not included in W. & T. of April 30 1830; Court Record, Book 1, Pg 93 and was Recorded on 09 Aug. 1830.
For the next 3 years, (1831, 32, 33) Greenberry SURRATT, appears on the Tax Rolls as being taxed for his father John,4 SURRATT property in Davidson Co., NC., but each year he appears with less property. This is something of an enigma because John,4's Will left the land and premises for the use of his "Widow" (2nd Wife) Mary "Polly" (DAVIS) PORTER, SURRATT to live on and raise the little daughter, Marthann. After Marthann became of age, the land was supposed to be divided beteeen the two brothers Allen,4 & John8 Jr. SURRATT.
In 1833 Greenberry SURRATT's name disappeared altogether and apparently he had either left for Illinois or was soon to do so. [REF:#90, Pg101]
Perhaps Greenberry was the SURRATT who stole the horse as the story goes, because his father John,4 SURRATT, did not leave him a horse, although he specifically gave the other two sons Allen,4 a young grey horse and John,8 Jr. received a grey mare. Somehow it seems that Greenberry was NOT in his father's favor, and there was not much incentive for him to remain in Davidson Co., NC. One even gets the feeling he was alienated from his brothers and sisters, although this could be an unfair judgement -- at any rate Greenberry did not settle where they did in Illinois, but went further north into Brown Co., IL. where some of his Uncle & cousins settled. [REF:#90, Pg101]
Greenberry SURRATT, was one of the families in the second group, to migrate to Brown Co., IL. in 1836-7 as per the Brown Co., IL. Introduction notes.
Original Land Records in the Courthouse at Mt. Sterling, Brown Co. IL. show that Greenberry received several good size grants of land from the U.S. Government from 1839 on, but he also sold land frequently. [REF:#90, Pg102]

Was a11y living with parents in the 1840 Census IL.
Perhaps his wife Frankey SURRATT did not wish to leave Illinois. Perhaps they quarreled because Greenberry made a poor living and didn't hold on to his property. No one knows what the problem was, but in Brink's History of Schuyler and Brown Co.'s [Pg134] states: [REF:#90, Pg102]
Green B. SARRAT was indicted at the April term of 1853 by the Grand Jury for the murder of Frances SARRAT. Death resulted from Frances being beaten and kicked while laying on the ground. The defendant was supposedly not found and never brought to trial.Age of Children at time of Frankey SURRATT's death! 1. 1st Son: John,36 a24y b. 1829 NC. 2. 1st Dau: Mary J., a21y b. 1832 NC. 3. 2nd Dau: Mariah, a18y b. 1835 NC. 4. 3rd Dau: Julia, a14y b. 1839 IL. 5. 2nd Son: Alexander, a11y b. 1842 IL. 6. 4th Dau: Percilla, a 9y b. 1844 IL. 7. 3rd Son: William J., a 4y b. 1849 IL.
Greenberry SURRATT , a50y married after 1853 in Brown Co., IL. to Keziah MORRIS and records of his estate being settled after his death on 17 Jan 1860 are on file in the CourtHouse at Mt. Sterling, Brown Co., IL. His estate was worth only $152.00 and after paying his bills, $46.00 was left for his Widow, Keziah SURRATT.
A G. VANDEVENTER received $89.00 for medical services and medicine. No Children were mentioned. [REF:#90, Pg102]
A search of original Court Records in Brown Co., IL. revealed No dispostions of Greenberry's case or mention of any criminal charges. What ever happen, a certain pathos and tragic element seems to cloud Greenberry's story from the beginning. [REF:#90, Pg102]
It is Not known what happen to these children, except perhaps for Alexander who seemed to be living in Schuyler Co., IL. in 1900, divorced, but with an 8 year old son Joseph SURRATT. [REF:#90, Pg102]
