SURRATT HOLLOW AND JEREMIAH SARRATT
Click on Thumbnail for larger Map If John,13 SARRATT left his name on a burial ground in Versailles Twp. in Brown Co., the family in general left its name on a lovely half-wild section of Elkhorn Twp. Although one of the oldest settlers in this section stubbornly clung to the spelling of his name with an "a" (Jeremiah SARRATT) as it shows on his transactions and his tombstone, the community at large used a "u" and the piece of terrain referred to is known today and has been known for many years as "SURRATT Hollow".
The History of Brown Co., published by the Co. Historical Society in 1972, describes Elkhorn Twp. as having been known as "The Little Ozarks". McKee Creek, a large full-running creek, winds through the Twp. carving tall bluffs out of the soil exposing limestone and sandstone strata. Timber grows easily and fresh springs run out of the hills toward the creek. Early families were raised on small farms and the men and boys worked in the timber, hunted, trapped small animals, and fished McKee Creek. Some of the men were stonemasons or worked in Marden's cooperage at the head of the hollow.

The original road wound through the hollow and crossed the creek six times leading the traveler to attractive swimming holes and pic- nicking spots. Residents of "SURRATT Hollow" built their houses up on the bluffs away from McKee Creek which was capable of furious flood- ing. Most houses were cabins with gardens and fruit trees growing inside picket fences. Rural electrification did not come to this part of the country until the 1930's.

The SURRATT's were well-known for their sugar camps in the spring. Maple trees grew abundantly in the hollow and they, as well as other settlers, made syrup and sugar. They also raised sorghum cane and made molasses in the fall when the cane was ready to harvest. People came from far and near to buy these products or they were taken to local stores to sell.

Miss Meribah CLARK reported to the authors of this book [REF:#90, 1980] that the tax collector allowed himself a full day of collection in "SURRATT Hollow" because each householder expected him to stay for a meal or a visit. "SURRATT Hollow" was also well-known for frequent gatherings where the fiddle was played for dancing and singing. Bert Perrell was a popular fiddler who traveled around on his little mule, Net, to all the festivities. On a pleasant Sunday neighbors enjoyed visiting the hollow for a picnic. It is said the SURRATT's loved to wrestle and to organize foot races on these occasions.

Perhaps Jeremiah SARRATT was the first SARRATT to move into the hollow, although it is difficult to tell from the records. He was

probably there by 1843 when he married Martha BELL, the daughter of John BELL who was supposed to have been born in the Rocky Mountains and died in Brown Co. between 1830 and 1840 at the age of 98. Martha was born in Alabama in 1824 and brought to Illinois by her father, and she and Jeremiah raised their family in the "SURRATT's Hollow."

Others to live there were Thomas, Jeremiah's older brother,
William, Jeremiah's nephew, and
two of William's sons, Abby and Elijah and their families.
In addition, other families living there were: Bernard Hoelscher, Bill Hetrick, Frank Sullivan, Callie and Jack Hall, John Smith, Tom Morris, and Bert Ferrell. Hiram Jacques also was an early settler on McKee Creek.

For a few years a Reorganized LDS Church stood on a high bluff along the creek, built about 1912 by Henry Moore and others. Child- ren attended Council School which called for sturdy legs because it was a good long walk for most of them.

When we saw SURRATT Hollow a few years ago, all that was left of Jeremiah's house were stones from the foundation. Elaine Martin, great-granddaughter of Mrs. Mariah J. (SARRATT) Moore, and her husband George spent a Sunday showing us the old landmarks of the hollow and telling us about life there. To find the old home site, we had to climb up a hill through a cow pasture. Two houses had been close together, Jeremiah's, which he later turned over to his son, Lemuel, and Mariah's. Lemuel and Mariah were Jeremiah's youngest children and were well remembered by Elaine who said sometimes they feuded and wouldn't speak, which must have been interesting since they lived so close together and had to get their water from the same spring which was still running plentiful and clear when we saw it.

Lemuel's wife, Sarah Catherine (Surratt)., [Cad was also his 1st Cousin, Once Removed, she was the 1st d/o William] was always called "Cad" and both "Cad" and Mariah (Surratt) MOORE smoked clay pipes. "Cad" developed a beautiful rock garden, hauling rocks up the hill from the creek to beautify her yard. She and Lemuel never had any children.

Mariah married King Henry Moore, a stone-mason, and they had ten children. She seemed to have a lot of energy, as Elaine remembered her. She had two little white horses which she would hitch up to a buggy and drive all over the country. Both Mariah and her husband were members of the Reorganized Church of the Latter Day Saints and they were instrumental in erecting a building in which to hold services in 1912. As the population in the Hollow dwindled, so did the membership in the church and the building was sold and moved out in 1935.

Jeremiah SARRATT's obituary stated he joined the Mormon Church when Joseph Smith was still at Nauvoo. Perhaps the SARRATTs were

End of Page 115

introduced to that faith by a neighbor in SURRATT Hollow, Hiram Jaques. Jaques was a follower of Joseph Smith and came west from Schoharie, New York, in 1837. He had planned to join with the Mormons in Missouri, but illness in his group forced them to tarry on McKee Creek. A sawmill and grist mill were being built there and in 1842 Hiram and his brother, William Jaques, bought the mills and a farm and remained there. Hiram was a practicing elder in the church and was said to have married many local couples.

In the April, 1840 issue of "Times and Seasons", the official journal of Joseph Smith, a report from Joseph Wood was published on pages 87 and 88 concerning the missionary work that he and William Burton were doing. He wrote on 26 March 1840 from Perry, Pike Co., and he said:

"I have baptized twenty in this and in Brown Co..... I organized a branch of the church in Brown Co. on Thursday last, about seven miles from this place... .this branch I have named the Mormon branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. This branch owns a school-house. On last Sunday I organized a branch of the church in Brown Co. between four and five miles from this village, consisting of eighteen members; this branch elect- ed Br. Stephen Abbott to the office of an elder; Br. Levi Powel, Priest; Br. William Jaques, teacher; Br. John Brown, Deacon. On Tuesday I baptized three more which raises its numbers to twenty- one, this branch I have been pleased to name Union branch it will meet on every other Sunday at this village on one Sunday either at Republican school-house or Br. Jaques, Brown Co., and the other at Perry, Pike Co. at the house of sister Ferre's."

It was probably during this time that Jeremiah and other members of his family joined the original church. According to his obituary, he rejected polygamy and probably other tenets of the church under Brigham Young, and he then became part of the Reorganized Church. He, his wife and his daughter-in-law Sarah (Cad) were all baptized into the Reorganized Church of LDS on 24 May 1879 at North Bend (so-called after a large north bend in the meanders of McKee Creek) by John Bake. These records are in the archives of the Reorganized Church in Independence, Missouri. No doubt Jeremiah was originally baptized before Joseph Smith's death, but his record or the record of other members of his family cannot be found today. They were probably lost by the church during its exodus to Utah.

Martha (Bell) SURRAT d. in May, 1902 at the age of 78 and Jeremiah d. a few months later in November, also at the age of 78.

Democrat-Message of Mt. Sterling, Brown Co., IL.
Dated: November 30, 1902
"Jeremiah SARRATT, a pioneer of the Co., passed away at his home in Elkhorn Twp. at 1 o'clock Friday afternoon, 28 November 1902, after a lingering illness principally the result of old age." Jeremiah SARRATT was b. in Davidson Co., North Carolina, 24 June 1824. In 1836 he came with his parents to Brown Co., which has since been his home. He was married to Martha BELL about the year 1843 and to them were born five children. One son died (early) while three sons and one daughter remain to mourn his death. The surviving children are:
Charles G. and Amos B. SARRATT who reside near Hebron, Nebraska,
Lemuel M. SARRATT who at present is supervisor from Elkhorn Twp., and
Mrs. Henry Moore (Mariah Surratt), who also lives in Elkhorn near Jaques Mill.
Mr. SARRATT was a modest man, a model farmer and good citizen, although he had no political aspirations. His brother, Daniel, was sheriff of this Co. in the early fifties. He embraced the faith of the Latter Day Saints at the time Nauvoo was Mormon headquarters and remained a disciple of that belief until death, although he never endorsed the polygamous doctrines practiced by them after their exile from Nauvoo. His faithful wife died May 21 of this year.
His remains were interred in Marden Cemetery Saturday afternoon and his funeral services will be held upon the arrival of some of the elders of the Mormon Church in this community." (End of obituary.)
