John,13 SURRATT, "HomePlace" 17 Jun 1836

Absalom Sr.'s oldest son, John,13 SURRATT filed for 77 acres in Section 29
of Versailles Township (Twp-2-South - Range-2-Wwsr) on 17 June 1836. This was to be his home
place and he established a small family cemetery on this property
which is still known today as <---
Surratt Cemetery.
Perhaps his father, the Absalom Sr., was the first person to be buried there. No marker exists
to show where he was buried, but this would have been the logical
place and would follow the southern tradition of using a private
cemetery. Furthermore, the area was still pretty much unsettled
then and churchyard cemeteries were not established.
John,13 SURRATT, was a very successful farmer.
At his death in 1863 his estate inventory shows he had added to his original grant so that
the acreage of that farm had increased to 155 acres. In addition,
he owned two other parcels in Section 32 of Versailles township
amounting to 78 acres. In nearby Pike County he owned three farms
in Chambersburg township --- one in Section 3 and two in Section 4.
The acreage is not listed, but at least two deeds exist in Pike
County deed books indicating he had acquired half sections in each transaction.

John,13's widow received $278.76 and ten heirs (including Crawford
Wood and John Bell, presumably sons-in-law) each received $55.75.
John,13 married Margaret Briggs, a native of North Carolina, and
two sons were born to them there before they moved to Illinois.
From various records (census, estate, cemetery) it is known they
had nine children and possibly eleven. In addition, in the 1860
census they were caring for Ellen and Stephen SARRATT, the children
of his deceased brother, Thomas,5 SARRATT.
As mentioned in all the history books of Brown County as being
a pioneer of Versailles township, John,13 not only left his mark on
the land by being the first to clear and farm it in Section 29, he
also left many descendants, some of whom still live in neighboring
communities as well as in various states of the union. Family
charts to follow will show these relationships.

Absalom Sr.'s oldest son, John,13 SURRATT filed for 77 acres in Section 29
of Versailles Township (Twp-2-South - Range-2-Wwsr) on 17 June 1836. This was to be his home
place and he established a small family cemetery on this property
which is still known today as
