I have a little tidbit that might be of interest to you: A mystery woman by the name of Elizabeth H. Serrette/Serrett 1802-1874 is buried beside John A. Crabtree, in the Crabtree Cemetery in Montgomery Co., IL. She is also listed on another page of the Crabtree Cemetery Book, therefore she has a duplicate listing, however, she shows up living with various members of the Crabtree family in numerous censuses in Montgomery Co., Illinois, but her relationship to them is so far unknown. Her place of birth is unknown. Have you ever come across this woman in your searching? Thank you

Thank you for all the data and the help. Right now my life has so many irons in the fie that I barely have time to breathe let alone do genealogy. However, I can tell you that: I have my suspicions that Elizabeth H. SERRATT most likely had the maiden name of Crabtree.
I believe it is possible that she may be a daughter of NC revolutionary war vet John Crabtree 1763/1845. He is buried in an unfound family plot near Hillsboro. I have been unable to find any census data listing John from his birth to when he shows up in Montgomery co., IL in about 1815. In spite of that, I have a ton of stuff on him, and have been able to restructure his life and travels fairly well. According to the birth of John's son John in 1802 in Muhlenberg/Christian co., KY in 1802 that gave me a location for John Sr. I have never done any research in Barren co., KY, and you probably can do a little searching to see if he is in that co from between 1895 to 1815. looking at the birth of John Jr. in 1802, and seeing that elizabeth was also born in 1802, and considering the fact that she lived and is buried with my Crabtrees, i strongly suspect that she may have been a twin to John Jr.
If you do not already have the census data for Elizabeth in all the Crabtree households in Montgomery co., IL, I will do my best to find the time to dig through my stuff and give you come concrete data.
Something for you to keep in mind. Muhlenberg co., KY was reformed into Christian co., and heavens knows what else prior to 1802, but the data I have for John Jr. states that he was born in Muhlenberg co.
Keep me posted, and I will get back to you also with some real data, and not just thoughts.

Subj: Re: Crabtree/Serette
Paul,
Well, in digging back through my files, I cannot find where I have the census data listing Elizabeth SERRATT in the with any of the Crabtree families, however, I have a few feelers out and will let you know what comes of it. What I do have is this:
You can add another surname spelling to the list, this time start her name with a "C". The 1850 Census I am sending as an attachment has her with two of her sons.
The folowing is what I got from Leslie (Rafferty) Alden, whose info your found on the LDS site. However, I have not spoken to Leslie for quite some time. I am sending it exactly as she sent it to me, and it is very vague, so read it as you will:
1840 Montgomery Co., IL Census
(Serratt, Elizabeth (they spelled it with an a instead of an 2 - not sure if it's the right one)
1845 Montgomery Co., IL. Tax Roll
1850 Montgomery Co., IL Census
1860 Montgomery Co., IL Census
Paul, I have copies of the 1850 census pages, and I can tell you for fact that Elizabeth was not living in the above mentioned John Crabtree household in 1850. I got the notion that Elizabeth was living with my Crabtrees from Leslie. I do not have any data to back that up.
Also, something that needs to be verified by Leslie is why she thinks her Elizabeth is connected to my Crabtrees as I no longer have that information. Leslie was certain of it, of that I am sure.
One item that does need to be addressed is the fact that Elizabeth is listed in the Crabtree Cemetery Census in two places. We need to establish which plot is correct. I have a connection in Hillsboro who lives only one block from the Cemetery and who will go and take a physical look for us. I will contact her.
Also, this: I don't have the page to send, but in the 1860 index there is a Sarah E. Serritt in Montgomery County, Hillsboro Township, Page 015.
I hope this help you. Pamela Schleicher, [email protected]

Subj: Elizabeth H. Serrette
Hi Paul,
You asked me a few months ago if I could give verify my claim that Elizabeth H. Serrette, who is buried in the Hillsboro, Montgomery Co., IL, Crabtree Cemetery in a plot next to John A. Crabtree, was found living in Crabtree households. Although I have not found the data in my work, I was sent an email from another Crabtree researcher, and the following is what he had been sent by Leslie (Rafferty) Alden,
As to Elizabeth Serrett: Leslie Ann Rafferty-Alden wrote 12 July 1993, "Oral family history says that we are related to the Crabtree family. My 3rd grt grandmother was named Elizabeth H. She was born in 1802 in KY, and she married a Serrette (Sernett?) most likely in KY. I first found her in Montgomery Co., IL. the 1870 Montgomery Co., IL Census she is living in the houshold Nancy Jane Crabtree and her husband Joel Fogleman; there is no relationship listed. Elizabeth is also buried in the Crabtree Cemetery along with John Crabtree and others of the Crabtree family.
Paul ... Nancy Jane Crabtree-Fogelman (1829/1912) was a daughter of my John A. Crabtree b. May 9 1809 in Muhlenberg Co., KY
It is my "possible assumption" that Elizabeth was a sister to my John, and a daughter of John Crabtree (1764/abt 1845) who was a SC revolutionary war veteran. If this is true, her mother would have been the Margaret Harkins (1765/1812).
The fact that Elizabeth was born in Muhlenberg Co. in 1802, and then is found also living in Montgomery Co., IL with my Crabtrees gives credence to Leslie Rafferty believing that Elizabeth was somehow related.
I do not know if Leslie Rafferty has attempted to find a death certificate in Montgomery Co., for Elizabeth. I have not.
Hope this helps. Pamela Schleicher, [email protected]

Mr. Paul R. Sarrett Jr.,
I do believe that your and my Sarratt Trees are the same for the first 4 generations starting with Joseph Sarratt. The tree branches from Tennessee.
My little twig of the Surratt family got quite thin at my grandfather,
Allen Silvester Surratt b 2/7/1863 d 3/14/35 (6.10 page 98 of the Laura and Norman H. Sarratt book).
Only one male child, my father "William Armonde SURRATT" (7.10 page 99), had children.

It wouldn't be much effort to assemble the records of my siblings and their offspring if that is something that would be useful to your site and I need to do it anyway.
I have just returned from a trip to Clinton, MD (Surrattsville). My daughter and I visited the house and took the all day bus tour of the John Wilkes Booth escape route. It's a great tour and we would do it again tomorrow if the opportunity arose.
That experience has stirred my genealogical juices enough to get me to look into Genealogy Gateway which is mentioned in the latest issue of Yahoo Magazine. I don't remember just how but from there I discovered a link to your pages. When I got there I was just blown away by the depth and volume of the information that you have displayed.
My knowledge of our extended family is all from a copy of the "Some Surratt/Sarratt Families" by Laura and Norman H. Sarratt. By my calculation I am a 8.1 from Joseph and now have eleven grand children that are 10s.
After spending nearly an hour on your pages I couldn't belive that you have only 900+ on your visits counter, it must be broken. When I tell my 7 children about your site the counter will move if it is working.
Is it possible for me to get a Copy of your Family Profiles? SARRATT/SARRETT/SURRATT Family Profile © - 34 Chapters, 275 Pages 8 1/2" X 11", 2 paragraph column pages; work book of family history, biography, names, births, deaths, marriage, siblings.
If possible I would like to get it electronically either by download or on floppy disks with permission to share a copy with each of my seven children. If that isn't possible the 8 and 1/2 by 11 format will be fine.
I have been to the Surratt Society Web site a number of times and that led to our trip last month. I sort of expected them to have links to web sites like yours. When I didn't find any there I thought none existed. Could I have your permission to request the Surratt Society to put a link to you on their page. Could be, that you have already asked and they don't want to get into genealogy. Their gig is history and preservation of the Tavern but I think that history and genealogy are dancing to the same music.
Thanks for all the work that you have put in.

Subject: Jersey Co IL Surat/Surratt
Hello Surratt Listers,
I'm a one week subscriber and very happy to find that such a list exits. In my first week there has been no traffic so my plan to just watch for a while isn't working very well. So, I'll just jump in.
Looking for information on my grandfather's family from the 1860s in Jerseyville, IL. Specifically, t caused him to be orphaned information about his siblings and their descendents.
My gfather, Allen Sylvester Surat b February 07, 1863 Jerseyville, IL d March 14, 1935 Marion, IL m February 13, 1887 to Julia Ann Chamness He was orphaned at a very young age and taken to an Aunt in Williamson Co IL at about age 3. (1866)
His parents: John Surat b January 16, 1812 Davidson Co., NC Julia A. Crain b February 28, 1820 IL, d November 11, 1864 The children:
1) William H. b 1840 IL
2) Melvina b 1843 IL d 9/25/1929 Alton, IL - married Thomas Bean
3) Thomas b 1846 Jersey Co., IL
4) Abell W. b 1849 Jersey Co., IL
5) John b 1853 Jersey Co., IL
6) Martha b 1855 Jersey Co., IL
7) Rosetta b 8/21/1857
8) Rosellen (twins) Rosellen apparently died as an infant
9) Anna A. b 1859 Jersey Co., IL
10)Allen Sylvester
In 1866 the probate of the maternal gfather - Felix Middleton CRAIN - has three of the siblings missing and presumed dead. I assume some disease decimated the family but have no proof. I am going to Jerseyville next month and will first look for any records of the deaths.
Any suggestions on what/where to look next. Thanks for listening, James (Al) Surratt - [email protected]
