Goto SFA© WWI Roster!  United States Draft Registrations
The United States was initially determined to remain neutral as war erupted across Europe. However, pressure mounted as German U-boats attacked and sank ships carrying U.S. citizens and then attempted to persuade Mexico to attack the United States. On April 6, 1917, the U.S. joined WWI and soon held the first of three draft registrations in which more than 24 million U.S. men would register for the draft.  The United States had more than 4.7 million service members serving worldwide during WWI. More than 50,000 American lives were lost during battle, with some 200,000 non-mortal woundings.

 DEATH; MADISON, INDIANA
Carlie Eugene SURRETT, 83yrs, In a town full of artists and musicians, Carlie Eugene SURRETT was in a category all his own. He was born March 17, 1927 in rural Kentucky, the son of a coal miner and homemaker. Carlie many "occupations" throughout his life, but, he was best known for his almost constant presence in downtown Madison. Almost daily for more years than people can remember, Carlie would make the trip to one of several favorite spots downtown where he would sit and play his guitar and harmonica for all to enjoy. With a warm smile and battered old tip can, he became a daily fixture of downtown. Many residents dubbed him "Old Man River" for his personality, songs and storytelling, which, are as enduring as the mighty Ohio River. In an article written by Joe Pietrykowski "for all of his far-fetched yarns, homespun music, ironically twisted recollections and serene cheerfulness, Olde Man River offers up a down-to-earth example of the classic bard, a wandering minstrel, one part William Shakespeare, One part Woody Guthrie with just a pinch of Candid for flavor." Carlie left this world on July 16, 2010, with a song in his heart and a smile on his face. He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.
PRIVATE CEREMONY: Private services will be held at a later date.
MEMORIAL EXPRESSIONS: Memorial contributions may be made to Carlie SURRETT Music Fund. Cards are available at the funeral home. Morgan Nay Funeral Centre
