Subject: [WashingtonDC] RE: Family Stories
Hello All,
I've been listening to the recent thread regarding family stories and thought I would share my most recent experience.
I have been sorting through a mystery for a few years now, after I discovered an unusual listing in my Ogden Family Bible (which unfortunately was the bone of much contention in that family, and since they spent so much time fighting over it, nobody wrote in it but it's original owner).
This bible listed a James Archibald JENKINS, and I had never heard of this name before. I began searching for this person, but I was starting to think he was invisible. When I was doing some research in Salt Lake City, I discovered a wonderful book called "Stones & Bones - Small Cemeteries of Prince George's County Maryland". In this book was the same James A. Jenkins, but with a different d.o.d., however, he was listed in the same cememtery where most of the Ogden family was buried.
From this book, I was able to find out who this man was. He was the youngest brother of Mrs. Mary (Jenkins) Surratt. Well, this sparked my memory back to a conversationI had with my mother when I was doing an American History paper in school. Coincidentally, I had been given the topic of the Lincoln Assassination as my topic for my final paper, and while discussing this with my mother, she told me about her Grandmother's reaction to newspaper article about the Surratt's back in the 1960's.
She told me her Grandmother was very upset that anyone would consider Mrs Surratt guilty and that it was a horrible crime she was hung. This always stuck in my mind because my GGrandmother never had an unkind word for anyone, and I mean anyone.
With this much information I decided to start digging through the multitude of books about the assassination and the Surratt's themselves. Although this was a great source education about the time and the people, I wasn't any closer to solving the riddle, only creating more questions. I found pictures of the Surratt's (but not James Jenkins) which led me to a friend who was studying Forensic Science and had him do a comparison study of those pictures as well as some photos of my GGrandmother, Grandmother and Mother. He came up with the conclusion that there could be a genetic link, and some of the points were close enough for sibling relationships.
Okay, now I was getting frustrated and excited at the same time. And it was at this point I found some census records listing my Ogden Family in 1860 and 1870. In between that time period the father John disappeared. I have not been able to find a death record for him as yet, but with the time period it is likely he is one of the many nameless men who died in the Civil War. With that info however, the 1870 census records brought another mystery, how could the widow Isabella Ogden have two children not of school age during the 1870 census.
During my reading about the assassination I found reference to a place called The Surratt House in Clinton, MD, on the site of the Postmaster John Surratt, Sr.'s office and tavern. I sent my information to the curator there and she sent to me the brief information she possessed about James A. Jenkins. In this letter she stated that James A. Jenkins had taken up with a widow woman who had several children, and though the two youngest children had her husband's name, that they were born after his death and were most likely James A. Jenkins' children. He left his few possessions to these children in his will. Also, he was buried in the Ogden family plot by a Bertie Ogden, an paid for by the by the Ogden Family as well (the bible was present to Alberta Jenkins Ogden by her mother on her 21st birthday).
This was as far as I got with this mystery for 5 years, until this Spring, when I found three of my Ogden Cousins. I pieced together a few of their family stories about similar events and made another breakthrough. They had their stories all mixed together across two generations, but because I had done a lot of research already we were able to take their legends and find the rest of what we needed to fill in the blanks of my research. I'm still working on solvong the whole riddle, but when you bang your head on a brick wall for 5 years, anything is an improvement. So, always listen to those stories, but also research them throughly, and never be afraid to dig further and go on faith when you have a hunch. I hope this story helps another story collector in their family mystery solving.

As you can see I originally sent this to haburulz and he suggested I try you. So thanks for any info you may have.
I read with interest the information about your (I think) great grandmother, the daughter of Mary Jrmloms) Surratt. I am contacting you because we are doing a geneology search on the Jenkins side of Mary (Jenkins) Surratt and was wondering if you had any information about Mary (Jenkins) Surratt's parents and her daughter Eugenia Suzanna Surratt, (Anna). We are especially interested in Mary (Jenkins) Surratt's father Archibald Jenkins and in the time frame from the death of Mary (Jenkins) Surratt to the marriage of the daughter. If you do not have any info yourself are there any suggestions you might make to lead us further in this search. Thanks for anything you may be able to do.

Joe,
I'm looking into my wife's family for her. We have heard the family story that my wife's ggmother Fletcher was related to Mary (Jenkins) Surratt, but could not figure what kind of a link it might be.
We recently got a copy of GPa Fletcher's death certificate. His mother was Margaret Ann Jenkins. Born about 1855. Married about 1870 to William Lee Fletcher in DC area.
I am looking for a link to the Zadock Jenkins line for Margaret. Any clues?

Paul,
I am researching the Jenkins line. I am down from Archibald's brother, John Jenkins who married Nancy Ann Higdon. But to get the family all lined out I am following all lines down to the late 1800's. By then most records are complete. I am very particular with facts. I like to back them up with documents. So here go my questions.
1. Where did you get your date of birth of 1781 for Archibald? I show 1769 as the 1776 census record for their father Zadock Jenkins shows two males 10 and 7. This makes John born 1766 and Archibald 1769. They were administrators of Zadock's estate in 1812 so both had to be at least 21 at that time. (Zadock's Probate File is found in Prince George Co MD Register of Wills Office, 3 Jan 1812).
Ans: See REF: # 10, & 11 at Archibald Jenkins Profile!
Archibald, was in his 40's when he married on Jan. 04, 1821 this would make him b. about c1781. If he was born c1769, he would have been 52y old in 1821 56y old when son James A. born in c1825 He was a31y at time of his fathers death in 1812

2. Where did you get the marriage date of 4 Jan 1821? I show 21 June 1821 taken from Prince George Co marriage Records. My mother did a lot of this research before here death and she was also very particular with dates before recording them in her records. I realize we are talking about the same year just different months.
Ans: See REF: # 10, & 11 at Archibald Jenkins Profile!      This is secondary info.
3. I show Elizabeth Ann Webester as Elizabeth "Bessie" Ann Webster. Is this just a typo on your World Connect Project of is it the correct spelling of the name?
Ans: WEBESTER was listed in some early records, I have no      prob. correction to WEBSTER, "Bessie" is a nick-name for Elizabeth.
4. But let's get our records to be the most correct that we can. I will gladly change my records if you can show where you obtained your information.
     Ans: I agree, with you!
5. I have quite a bit of informaiton of Archibald Jenkins' father Zadock Jenkins and on back. I am in the process of making sure that everything I have is supported by documents. I am looking for more information on John, Archibald's brother. Do you have any information on him?
Ans: I would love info. on Zadock JENKINS, my primary family is the SURRATT-JENKINS Connection
See: John H. SURRATT, Sr. Profile!

The remainder of the information about the children of Archibald and Elizabeth Ann Webester and their grandchildren match my records. I have a contact (need to locate it) of a child down from James Archibald Jenkins and his common law wife. Are you interested in any of this information? If so, I'll locate the person's name and forward it to you.
Ans: Yes, that would be great, I see REF:10 & 11 refer that he died "almost illiterate, dissolute old man"
We are cousins but not in direct lines.

Paul,
I found your entry on Gedcom but how do you open it. After I have downloaded it I am asked what program to open it with. Got the same thing last night that was why I was asking so may questions about your documentation. Getting information off the web is my downfall. I can't get to your Archibald Jenkins Profile and the references that you make to it.
Ans: When you down-load it is in a .ZIP format, you need a Un-Zip program to convert to a .GED Program. ..prs
I still want to say Archibald's date of birth is 1769 based on the 1776 census. I will double check that census record the first time I get to a genealogy library. Maybe one day next week. The dates for John and Archibald could be turned around. I need to go back through my mother's records and see why she had John the oldest, born in 1766. I will also recheck the Prince George Co marriage Records if they are in the genealogy library in Oklahoma City. If not, I hope to get to Maryland sometime next summer.

Ans: Let me known what "proof" you find out. ..prs

Paul,
I was finally able to open your page on Archibald Jenkins. I loaded WinZip and that seems to open everything.
I went back through my mother's papers and I have a certified copy of the 1776 census for Zadock? Do you wish a copy of this? My mother had made transcriptions of so many census records, that I had forgotten that she did have copies of some. Marie Jenkins Penington, E-Mail: [email protected]

I am related to the Jenkins family, Mary (Jenkins) Surratt was my grandmother Bernadette Donohoe's aunt, In trying to research the Jenkins family, we have found no direct link showing Enoc Jenkins to be Zadoc's father. Hello Paul,
I see on your site at Ancestry.com that you show Zadoc Jenkins is the son of Enoch Jenkins and Ann Clarvo. Could you tell me your source for this info? Enoch Jenkins doesn't mention a son Zadock in his will? Thank you for your help, Shirley Middleton Moller
