Paul R. SARRETT, Sr., age 3mths
spent his early years in this house in the Sugar
Creek area of Kansas City. The true story is not known, but the
following close to the actual happenings. His father Hugh Ezekiel SARRETT left them sometime
around 1923, when Paul, Sr. was a young
boy of six years old.
(Source my mother, M. Lucille (WILSON) SARRETT, 1985), this is NOT true!
My Grandmother, who I don't remember Mary C. (SMITH) SARRETT, raised
her two children in the Catholic faith. They were members of the "St.
Theresa Church" located at 5814 Euclid Ave. Kansas City, Mo.
I have a small black "Prayer Book" which is 2 inches
wide and 4 inches tall with only 80 pages. On the back inside cover
their is a identification page which states this book belongs to Paul
SARRETT, and that he lives at 3021 Bellefountaine Ave. This book
was "imprimaturs" by the Retired Rev. THOS. F. ILLIS, of Kansas
City, Mo. dated 30th Oct. 1928. (Paul, Sr. would have been 11
yrs. old...prs).

1. A small 3 inch wide and 5 inch tall: "Christ Crucifix" with "INRI" embossed on the front.
(their is a stamp on the back "105 PARSONS"....prs)
The cross with Christ upon it is a reminder of the love He has for us. The crucifix is also a way to help keep us humble and reminds us not to sin. The crucifix is a reminder for us that it was our sins that nailed Him to the cross.
|
|
2. Two, "Rosery Beads", one missing Crucifix
Rosary beads come in all shapes, colors, sizes and quality. Some rosaries are strung with pearl, crystal, wood and even plastic.
The rosary in simplest terms is a tool used to aid prayer and meditation. The beads of a rosary count the prayers as they are recited out loud or in the mind. Relying on the rosary beads to keep track of how many times youve said a particular prayer allows you to clear your mind and meditate on your prayer more effectively.
History of Rosary Beads:
The earliest records of the practice of counting prayers among religions of Western culture can be traced to the 11th and 12th centuries. It is believed that people carried small stones or pebbles in their pockets with which to count prayers. |

State Tax Tokens from the Great Depression, of the ~ 1930's
These tokens were issued by various states during the Great Depression of the 1930's.
They were issued to make change for fractions of a cent for customers to pay the new state sales taxes.
The token values were usually in "Mills" or 1/10th of a cent.
Most states stopped making them in 1935.
They are not worth very much now, usually $1.00 or less. A couple of varieties are rarer.
Mom kept these"1930's Tokens" in the box, in desk, in kitchen.

C.C.C. History!
Following years of prosperity, the stock market abruptly crashed in October 1929. Despite the efforts of the government's unprecedented but limited recovery programs under President Herbert Hoover, the United States slid into the Great Depression. Many banks failed, loans and mortgages were foreclosed, unemployment mushroomed to around 40 percent, factories shut down, farms were abandoned and bread lines grew in cities.
Almost immediately after taking office in 1933, new President Franklin D. Roosevelt proposed a flurry of government programs designed to lift the country out of the depression. Convening a special session of Congress, Roosevelt outlined relief measures targeting high unemployment, low wages, unstable banks, and providing aid for industry and agriculture. Almost all of Roosevelt's proposed bills were passed by Congress. A top priority of the programs was to get the people out of bread lines and into sustainable work.
Thirty-seven days after Roosevelt's inauguration, the first enrollee signed into the Emergency Conservation Work,
later re-named the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Unmarried, unemployed men age 18-25 were the first enrollees. Later the age limit changed to 17-23. World War I veterans also had separate camps. Enrollment was for six months and could be extended up to a total of two years.

My parents and two sisters lived only a short time at the 4213 East
23rd. & Jackson Ave. home, this was where Paula SUE SARRETT was born
on Thur. 7th of November 1940, (Nov. 02nd. Based on C.O.D.) she never
left the "K.C. General Hospital, No. 1", she died 26 days later
on 28 Nov. 1940 of what Dr. DEWEY R. THRONE described as PURLENT
HYDROCEPHALUS normally called "Water on the Brain". Paula SUE
SARRETT was buried on 30th Nov. 1940, in the Mount Washington Cemetery,
located on Truman Road and Blueridge Blvd. She is located on the same
Lot of her Grandmother MARY C. (SMITH) SARRETT and Grandfather Hugh
E. SARRETT (Lot So. 1/2 of #170). By the summer of 1941 they removed
again to a small house located at 2802 Wenzel Ave. Kansas City.
|
2802 Wenzel Ave, K.C., MO. Dec. 9th, 1941 |
Paul R. SARRETT, Sr. (Social Security Registered Number 492-14- 4062)
was working with his now Brother-in-law Ernie DeVASHER and their Floor
Sanding business, for some 5 years.
Paul R. "Junior" SARRETT Jr. was born on
Thur. evening in the home [Rented] on 2802 Wenzel Ave. Kansas City, Mo. 2 days
after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on the 7th of December 1941.
With a family of three small babies Paul R. SARRETT, Sr. was "4-F" and not allowed
to enter the World War II (WWII) active service, so he went to work
at the North American "BENDIX" plant located in the Fairfax
area of Kansas city, some time around 1942. My mother stated:
"He (Dad) got an award and an "Certificate" for a suggestion he made in
the improving the defense assembly line."
No record has been found of that certificate..prs) "He was disappointed that
he could not go into the service during WWII but they needed him at the defense plant."

The reason is not known for why he applied for but, I have a record
of an "Delayed or Special" Certificate of Birth which Paul
R. SARRETT, Sr. applied for on 27th June 1943, that he listed as
"School Record - Public Schools, Kansas City, Mo. School Document
Dated 16th Jan. 1931". This can be assumed that he at least completed
the 6th grade, he would have been 13 years old. The Grade-School
closest to the "SMITHS" Bellefountaine Ave. home would have been
located on Benton and 30th. name unknown.
The SARRETT, Sr. family moved again by late 1943 next door to a
bigger house at 2804 Wenzel Ave. where on Monday 15th of November
1943 the 5th child and second son Ermal Hugh SARRETT was born. Ermal
was named after both his Grand-fathers, Ermal L. WILSON and Hugh E.
SARRETT. The last child Janet Lee SARRETT was born at the Hospital
on Sunday afternoon of the 4th of February 1945. This was the end
of WWII and the War effort at North America was shutdown, so Paul
R. SARRETT, Sr. went to work for "Standard Plating Works"
located at 15th and Eastern Ave. Kansas City.

Paul R. & Lucille (Wilson) Build Home: August 1946 to January 1950, 4 years to build! |
|
Paul Sr. and Lucille bought a vacant piece of property 80' wide by
138.03' deep, located at 3318 Kensington Ave. in Kansas City, Missouri,
on 26 Aug. 1946. On 17th Aug. 1946 Paul Sr. filed for a "Application

with construction paper.
We moved in to the basement between Dec. 12 and before Christmas of
1946, with two adults and five children into this 24' x 30' basemen, one large room!
Mom, set up a "Kitchen" area at the Northwest corner, where we had a 'Gas'
stove with the exhaust pipe out the 24"wd x 12"ht window. we had a "tiolet" only installed
under the stairs going up to the outside. (Mom placed a curtin on the north side, but it was exposed
on the East & South side). Their was not a bath tub or shower, the little ons were washed in the kitchen
sink, and the older ones in a galvanized tub in the center of the room. We had 3 regular beds, 1 form Mom & Dad at the Northwest corner of the room,
1 along the center of East wall for all three girls and on at the Northeast corner for the two boys.
We had no "Living" Room" we had no "TV."
One year 3 months & 22 days later On 20th. of Aug. 1947 We were given
a "Cease & Desist" order from the Division Building Inspections
for using the Basement for temporary living quarters, until Permission
has been granted by the Zoning Board.
We received another citation on the 8th of Oct. 1947 which stated:

MILTON MOORE "Mother of the Year - 1953"
The Community Chronicle, November 14th, 1953; Page 3

|
Mrs. Paul SARRETT, Milton Moore "Mother of The Year"
would be an apt description of the subject for this month's Community Leader. In a neighborhood
which is blessed with a wealth of good mothers who also have time
to be good citizens, Lucille SARRETT stands out. No one of our neighborhood
in this capacity has given so unselfishly of herself for the welfare
of other people's kids while still having time to be a good wife and
mother in her own family.
Mrs. SARRETT was born in Page County, Iowa in the town of
Shambaugh. She met and married Paul SARRETT there and immediately
moved to Kansas City where the couple made their home at 3021 Bellfontaine,
moving into their present home at 3318 Kensington about 9 years ago
(1944). Mr. SARRETT is an electroplater and is presently employed
by the Standard Plating Works. During their 16 years of marriage,
the SARRETTS have been blessed with 5 children,
<---Patricia, age 15yrs, at Central Senior High,
<---Babs, age 14yrs and
<---Junior, age 11, Central Junior High,
<---Ermal, age 10yrs, and
<---Janet, age 8yrs, pupils at Milton Moore.
Lucille has been active in PTA at Milton Moore while seeing
her children through school, and presently is "Arts Appreciation Chairman". In this capacity she sees that those children enrolled
are chaperoned to the plays offered at the "University Playhouse."
She has been a Den Mother in the
<---
"Cub Pack #72" for several years
and at this time has a Den of 8 Cubs meeting in her home each week. She
has the longest record of service to Cub Scouting of any adult now
enrolled in this work.
Girls, too, get her attention. She is a "Blue Bird" leader
giving proper leadership to a group of 14 girls. With all this activity,
Mrs. SARRETT keeps a good home, watches Television as you
and I, and has no maid. Yet she always finds time to lend a helping hand to
any good neighborhood project.

Dad, went to work as a "Electro-plater, at Standard Plating Works for about 9 years (1945-1954) when
he was laid off due to his drinking problem.
I remember on Saturdays Dad would take me down to the shop, and it
was a run down building, with large vats or tanks of smelling liquid,
that they would dip items in for plating. I would sweep and do clean up work, then
got to the Bar with him until he got plasterd.

Dad dies in a Fire, age 50yrs!
|
|
Paul R. SARRATT, Sr. died in a the hotel elevator and was found
two hours after the fire started. Mrs. Dorothy Bowen, housekeeper
at the hotel, said she was in the lobby with Paul , Sr. when they
saw smoke coming from the basement. "It was around 3:30 o'clock,"
she said. "He and I went into the basement to check what was
going on. Paul , Sr. was in front of me." She said when they entered
the basement they saw thick smoke. Mrs. Bowen said Paul , Sr. pushed
her out of the side entrance and re-entered the basement alone.
Fire officials said Mr. SARRETT must have tried to escape
through the elevator but failed. At one point firemen gave up hope
of finding Mr. SARRETT. They had searched the area thoroughly. Then
one of the firemen shouted, "Here he is here in the elevator."
= The 49 residents of the 7-story hotel, most of them in
their 60s and 70s, were evacuated before the fire spread. The fire
which started about 3:30 o'clock in the afternoon, in the basement,
spread quickly around the north section of the building where most
of the residents lived. Firemen used three trucks and seven pumpers
to put out the fire.
A resident in the basement of the hotel, Mrs. Wanda Mendenhall,
said she was in the kitchen and her three children were watching television. "I
saw smoke all around me and the kids started screaming. We couldn't
get out the front door and we tried to break open the windows,"
she said. A 13 year-old girl, Cindy Weddington, who lives at 920
East Twenty-seventh street, said she was passing and saw the children
crying to get out the window. "This girl (pointing to Cindy)
pulled out my 5-year-old girl and the 10-year-old boy through the
window and later helped me out," Mrs. Mendenhall said. The 16
yr. old daughter of the manager of the Hotel, Mrs. Babs Darck, said,
"I saw what was going on at the window and I rushed to bring the
other children out. This boy (pointing to the 11-year-old son of Mrs.
Mendenhall insisted that he wanted to go in to bring his shoes back. I
waited for him and then pulled him out. Cindy Weddington is a student
at Westport high school.
The cause of the fire and estimated damage have not been
determined. Smoke damage was extensive throughout the basement where
furniture and other belongings of the residents had been stored. Two
apartments in the first floor also were affected by smoke.
Paul R. SARRETT, Sr. was a lifelong area resident. Surviving
are his wife Mrs. Margaret Sarrett; a step-daughter
Mrs. Leslie Strum,
and a granddaughter.

WHEN GOD CREATED FATHERS, HE NEW THAT
SHOULDERS SHOULD BE BROAD, HANDS BIG
When the good Lord was creating fathers, he started with a tall frame.
And a female angel nearby said, "What kind of father is that?"
"If you're going to make children so close to the ground, why have fathers up so high?"
"He won't be able to shoot marbles without kneeling, tuck
a child in bed without bending, or even kiss a child without a lot of stooping?"
And God smiled and said, "Yes, but if I make him childsize,
who would children have to look up to?"
And when God made the father's hands, they were large and sinewy.
And the angel shook her head sadly and said, "Do you know
what you're doing? Large hands are clumsy. They can't manage diaper
pins, small buttons, rubber bands on pony tails or even remove splinters
caused by baseball bats."
And God smiled and said, I know, but they are large enough
to hold everything a small boy empties from his pockets at the end
of a day-yet small enough to cup a child's face in his hands."
Then God molded long, slim legs and broad shoulders.
The angel nearly had a heart attack. "Boy, this is the
end of the week, alright," she chuckled. "Do you realize you
just made the father without a lap? How is he going to pull a child
close to him without the child falling between his legs?"
And God smiled and said, "A mother needs a lap. A father
needs strong shoulders to pull a sled, balance a child on a bicycle,
or hold a sleepy head on the way home from the circus.
God was in the middle of creating two of the largest feet
anyone had ever seen when the angel could contain herself no longer.
"That's not fair. Do you honestly think those large boats
are going to dig out of bed early in the morning when the baby cries?
Or walk through a small birthday party without crushing at least three
of the guests?"
And God smiled and said, "They'll work. You'll see. They'll
support a small child who wants to ride a horse to Banbury Cross,
or scare off mice at the summer cabin, or display shoes that will
be a challenge to fill."
God worked throughout the night, giving the father few words,
but a firm, authoritative voice, eyes that saw everything, but remained
calm and tolerant.
Finally, almost as an afterthought, God add tears to the father.
Then he turned to the angel and said, "Now are you satisfied that
he can love as much as a mother?"
The angel shutteth up.

MOTHER'S PRAYER
Make me a wise mother, O Lord. Keep me calm and give me Pat ience
to bear the small, irritating things in the daily routine of life.
Give me tolerance and understanding to bridge the gulf between
my generation and that of my children.
Let me not be too ready to guide my children's stumbling
fee, but allow me to be ever near to bind their bruises.
Give me a sense of humor that I may laugh with them but never
at them.
Let me refrain from preaching with words. Keep me from forcing
their confidences, but give me a symPat hetic ear when my children
come to me.
Help me teach them that life must be replete with victories.
Make me humble.
Keep my children close to me, O Lord, though miles may separate us.
And let Thy light so shine upon me that they, too, will perceive
Thy glory.
Amen.

NOBODY KNOWS but MOTHER
How many buttons are missing today?
How many toys are left in her way?
How many thimbles and spools has she missed?
How many burns on each little fist?
How many bumps to be cuddled and kissed?
Nobody Knows But MOTHER.

THANK YOU MOTHER
For all your loving care,
For every anxious prayer,
For every precious look,
For every step you took,
For every waiting night,
For every kindly light,
For tact and awkward ways,
For love on trying days,
Today and now and here,
We thank you, Mother dear.

WHICH LOVED HER BEST
"I LOVE YOU, MOTHER,"
said little John;
Then, forgetting his work, his cap went on,
And he was off to the garden swing,
Leaving his mother the wood to bring.
"I LOVE YOU, MOTHER,"
said rosy Nell;
"I love you better than tongue can tell";
Then she teased and pouted full half the day,
Till her mother rejoiced when she went out to play.
"I LOVE YOU, MOTHER,"
said little Fan;
"To-day I'll help you all I can";
How glad I am that school doesn't keep,
So she rocked the baby tell it fell asleep.
Then, stepping softly, she took the broom,
And swept the floor, and dusted the room.
Busy and happy all day was she,
Helpful and cheerful as a child could be.
"I LOVE YOU, MOTHER,"
again they said,
Three little children going to bed.
How do you think that mother guesses,
Which of them really loved her best?
