Possible Record Problem #1 REEVES/WELLS Marriage |
On Ancestry.com "WorldConnect Project" there are over 57 different GEDCOM's
which have this REEVES/WELLS family and many with different first names "Sidney"
& "Betsy"; born dates; marriage dates etc. but all are this family.
I have not found one with any creditable "Source Reference"
In 1993 LDS [REF:001] gives James REEVES & Elizabeth WELLS marriage, but
no Marriage date or County location.
Another [REF:002.2] source gives the North Carolina Marriage Bonds, 1741-1868 Record list a Marriage Bond:
Groom: Sidney James Reeves
Bride: Elizabeth Wells
Bond Date: 11 Jan 1785
Bond #: 000059112
ImageNum: 008467
County: Guilford Co., NC.
Record #: 02 372
Bondsman: Jacob Blackwell
Witness: W. Dent
|
I don't think this Sidney James REEVES & Elizab. "Betsy" WELLS is our subject.
Fact 1. James REEVES was used in the 3 Census records, NOT "Sidney"
Fact 2. Why would James & Elizabeth go back East to Greensboro
(Guilford Co) to be married, when
they were living in the western frontier?
Fact 3. If they were married Jan 11, 1785, James REEVES was age 11yrs?
Elizabeth WELLS was age
8yrs of age in 1785.
Fact 4. If married in 1785, their 1st born was not born until 1792,
some 7 years later?

In [REF:002.3] Writes:
The tombstones for Wells and Margaret do not appear to be as old as they ought to be.
I believe that my grandfather put them there at a later date.
He most likley went by the dates of death given in his father's Bible records.
I don't have a picture but they simply say Wells Reeves - 07 Mar 1891 and
Margaret Surrett Reeves - 18 Dec 1885. No birth dates are recorded in the Bible
which I have stared at long and hard many times. Dee Ballard |
In [REF:003.1] Writes:
Wells REEVES grave marker in the Walnut Methodist Church Cemetery says
that he died on March 7, 1891.
The 1870 North Carolina census for Madison County, Wells is shown as
being 70 years old. This would put his birth date at abt. 1799-1800.
Ken Reeves |
In [REF:002.1] Writes:
My grandfather, Rev. John Henry Ballard, wrote his autobiography in 1924.
It does have some errors but includes,
I have always felt that my work should be especially among the young people:
first because their hearts are tender and easily touched; second, because of
my inability to instruct the better informed, yet there have been some old
people converted in my meetings.
Among them my wifes grandfather Welse Reeves, who was ninety-one years old.
Said Reeves lived to be 95 years old.
Dee Ballard |
In [REF:003.1] Writes:
An excerpt from John Henry Ballard's biography:
"...yet there has been some old people converted in my meetings.
Among them my wife's grandfather, Welse Reeves, (Wells Reeves)
who was ninety-one years old. Said Reeves lived to be 95 years old...."
If this information is true, this would put his birth about 1796.
