Biography - George T. LOFLIN In the year of 1867 Clark and Linnie [SURRATT] LOFLIN lived in Alleghany Township of Davidson County. Their post office was Chandler, N.C. [Not listed in ZIP code index...prs] The post office stood just south of the big hickory tree at what is now CHANDLER'S Grove Church. The nearest town was Newsom, NC. [Zip 27239] with ist depot and general store where just about anthing you needed could be bought. It was here at their home, not too far from what we know as Grandma LOFLIN place, that George Tucker LOFLIN came into this world on a Spring day in April. As a young man, George worked for Johnny COGGINS on his farm. Often he carried Johnny's children from the barn to the house on his back. One day, sometime around 1894 George T. LOFLIN married Johnny's daughter, Corinna COGGINS and carried her home with him.
George T. LOFLIN bought 106 acres from John SURRATT along MOORE's Old Road. It was at an old houseplace at Secret Springs on this property only about a quarter of a mile from his parent's home that the young couple lived. Corinna did her wash in the waters on Secret Springs. On this property was an old schoolhouse built for black children, most likely the children of earlier slaves. This schoolhouse was also used as a church and sometimes George T. LOFLIN attended church service there. The rocks from the old stone foundation and fireplace remain there today. George T. fenced the lands with split rail fencing which he split himself. (he had a real knack for splitting rails) Prior to the stock law he fenced in his fields in to keep the animals out, later he kept the hogs which he raised in these fences. Occasionaly to supplement his income from farming, he would shoot partidges with his musket rifle and sell them for 25 cents apiece.
Page 1) George T. & Corinna (COGGINS) had three sons:
Alvin, Talmadge and Bradley
and two daughters, Louese and Nannie Mae.
At the very young age of 2yrs in 1901, Louese LOFLIN died from what was then known as flux. Her small grave was the first grave in the Alleghany Cemetery.
In 1907 the couple built a house, the house that presently stands, and moved in shortley before Bradley's birth. [b. *1908]
On March 04, 1911 Corinna (COGGINS) LOFLIN died from TB leaving behind four children. Bradley can remember his Grandpa COGGINS saying "George T., I don't know what you are going to do with all these little children and Jennie (Corinna's younger half-sister) is too young to marry".
Bradley [b. *1908] who was about three years old wished his father would marry Jennie COGGINS. [b. c1895 was 16yrs old in 1911] He was found of his Aunt Jennie and she made the family a Chocolate Cake. Sometime after Corinna's death Daniel SURRATT brought his daughter Lou Nealie SURRATT to Alleghany to play the organ. She and George T. begain a courtship and were married in November of 1912.
Lou Nealie (SURRATT) LOFLIN was good to her stepchildren and they loved one another. The first child born to this 2nd union died at birth. The grave is unmarked but is located near where it's mother is buried. The couple had three daughters - Irene, Jenore, and Elizabeth and one son Joel.
When World War I was being fought. Alvin LOFLIN wanted to enlist but they wouldn't take him because of his health. Alvin and his wife Della moved to Danville, Virginia to work in the defence plant there. Alvin LOFLIN died November 19, 1918, around the end of the war in Danville. at about 22 years of age. He was buried in the Aleghany Cemetery by his little sister and near his mother.
Although George T. LOFLIN's trade was farming, he also was a licensed minister, an echorter- "to call sinners to repentance". He was a vary active member

of Alleghany Methodist Church for over 62 years. He taught Sundy School and was the Sunday School Superintendent for years. According to a History of Davidson County Schools, George T. was a committeman for Alleghany School along with his brother Neals LOFLIN and N.L. FINE. From his life we know that George T. LOFLIN had high moral values and a stron commitment to his community, his Church, his family and most of all his Lord.
On another spring day in April 82 years after his birth, George Tucker LOFLIN left his earthly home near his place of birth and went to his Hevenly reward leaving us, his descendants a rich heritage.
