Paul, I am sorry that it has taken me so long to get this information to you. I hope that you don't think that I was only trying to seek information. I am more than willing to share what information that I have. The problem is that I don't have a lot of information. I do want to thank you for everything that you have provided. It has helped put some of the pieces together. I hope that this information helps My great grandmother Minnie LuElla SURRETT is the daughter of James Oscar and LuElla (Potts) SURRETT. It is my understanding that this family came from Rome, Georgia, which is in Floyd county. And that they married in Birmingham, Alabama. That they moved to Texas in the early 1890's with other members of there family. My great grandmother Minnie SURRETT was born 04-11-1893 in Lamar county Texas. She married John Lewis Martin on 02-29-1912 in Choctaw county Oklahoma. It is my understanding that the family moved to Oklahoma sometime before 1907. I do know that Cicero and Sarah J. SURRETT are the parents of James Oscar SURRETT. And they had several other children. I have found this family listed on the 1870 census records for Floyd County, Georgia. A copy of this census record is attached to this letter. The spelling of the last name is somewhat different then the current spelling. It is spelled Surralt, however as you have stated this was not uncommon. They are now currently spelling it as SURRETT and that is the way that I will list it in this letter. Below is the information taken off the 1870 census record. Name Sex Age Place of Birth 1. Cicero M 35 Georgia 2. Sarah J. F 34 Georgia 3. William R. M 13 Georgia 4. Cicero A. M 8 Georgia 5. Frances M. F 12 Georgia 6. Henry G. M 6 Georgia 7. James O. M 3 Georgia 8. Mary T. F 1 Georgia According to what I have learned in my research, is that the family of Cicero SURRETT lived in Floyd county Georgia. That Cicero was also a soldier in the Civil War, fighting for the confederate army, and that he served for the state of Georgia. That after the war he and his family continued to live in the area of Floyd county. And that on November 1, 1875 Cicero SURRETT was shot and killed by a bootlegger, in Cedartown, Georgia. That Sarah J.SURRETT moved her family to Alabama and eventually to Lamar county Texas, sometime in the late 1880's or early 1890's. The family moved to Oklahoma some time around 1907, ending up in Antlers, Oklahoma which is the county seat of Pushmataha county. In the obituary for Sarah J. SURRETT, which a copy is attached, it lists her living children and there place of residence as follows. William R SURRETT living in Antlers, OK., Henry SURRETT living in Alabama, Mrs. Mende Miller of Bisbee, AZ., Mrs. Lizzie Wallace of Oakland, Alabama, and Mary Malone who also lives in Alabama. Also in the notes that I received showed that Billy and Martha SURRETT are the parents of Cicero SURRETT and that they came to America from France by way of Ireland. And that they lived in Gadsden, [Etowah Co.,] Alabama. That Billy SURRETT also served in the confederate army during the Civil War. None of this information has been verified and I don't know where this information came from. The following is what information that I know about the children of Cicero and Sarah J. SURRETT. There oldest child William R. SURRETT was involved in establishing the first Church of Christ church in the community of Antlers, and it has been told that he helped establish several churches in the area. He was also active in forming the first local republican party in southeastern Oklahoma. He also was very active in purchasing real estate in the Antlers area. 1. William R. If you have a question about something please advise. I did find in my notes that they refer back to a Billy and Martha SURRETT (I am sure this is not the correct spelling for the time) as being the parents of Cicero and Sanford. Have you ever heard of them. My notes say that they lived in Gadson or Gadsen Alabama. Probably nothing to it, just wondered if you have heard of them. In closing I would like to thank you for all the help that you have provided. I really didn't realize that there were any other SURRETT's out there. When I talk with the family in this area, all they could tell me was that they don't know anything. I hope that you can help fill in some of the blanks. Or that you can send me in the right direction. If you have any additional information that you can provide it would be greatly appreciated. Any information that you have regarding Cicero's children or his children's children would also be appreciated. I look forward to hearing from you in the future. Sincerely, Terry J.
