I see several querries on David & Elizabeth COOPER who came to Spartanburg District and settled on Thicketty Creek before 1790. They came with Daniel AMOS, Sr. and his wife Orpha COOPER. Orpha's parents were David & Elizabeth (Unknown) COOPER. I don't know what Elizabeth's maiden name was. Daniel AMOS, Sr. and Orpha had 9 children. Their 7th child David AMOS b. 1791 married Nancy WATKINS (dau of William and Sarah Watkins). David AMOS, Sr. settled in Rutherford Co, NC. He died 1856. His children:
  • Marion who mar (1) Elizabth Massour COOPER and mar (2) Rebecca Hames.
  • Minnervia or Manervia who married Thomas Vassey is the line from which I am connected.
All the above infor was found in the magazine " South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research" Vol. VII, Winter 1979 on page 235. It was compiled by Dennis AMOS (604 Ferndale Dr., Rock Hill, SC 29730). I do not know if he is still living as he did not reply to a letter I wrote him July 1997. Found burial listings for COOPER in State Line Cemetery, Spartanburg Co., SC as follows;
  • COOPER, John M January 3,1878 May 2, 1938
  • COOPER Verdie S January 20, 1876 June 4, 1965
  • COOPER H. J. August 18, 1900 May 25, 1928
I hope this info helps someone else. I would love to exchange information on AMOS, COOPER, VASSEY, LIPSCOMB, WATKINS. Barbara Mock, I live in Albany, GA. email [email protected] Posted: 15 Dec. 1997

Mr. Sarrett,
While looking through the SC Archives web, I came across the message that you were also interested in any Cooper family information.
I was researching a David Cooper at the time. There is a Layton-Cooper Family Cemetary adjacent to my great-aunt's home. As I am not as knowledgable about the relationships as my Grandmother is, If you would like to contact me I can put you in touch with her.
Sincerely,

Hello, Paul!
This is a long shot.
Peter Hayes married Kiziah, and they named one of their sons COOPER. They moved from SC to Bedford Co, TN around 1816.
In view of COOPER's name, it has been suggested that Kiziah's maiden name was COOPER. I understand that a COOPER family was also in Bedford Co, TN about the same time as the Hayes family.
Family legend has it that either Peter's or Kiziah's mother was a Cherokee indian.
I haven't been able to connect Peter to any of the Hay(e)s families who were in 18th century SC.
If you can add anything in the way of a COOPER or Hayes connection, I'd be most glad to hear of it.
Regards, LV

Saw your note on GenCom, and couldn't help but be curious as to what you may know about our Cooper family in South Carolina.
Our knowledge to this point is that Jacob COOPER, Sr. owned land on the Catawba river when he died in 1769 leaving it to his wife, two daughters and son. Jacob COOPER, Jr. lived on the land and served in the South Carolina militia during the Revolutionary War, and when he died in 1805 his wife, Rebecca McKinney moved to Breckenridge County Kentucky.
Anything you might have on the Coopers would be appreciated. Thanks, Paul Cooper

I descend from Isles Cooper, his dau Elizabeth that married William Ferebee ( a Patriot, Currituck Co, NC) and their dau Anne Ferebee that married to Henry Perkins II in Currituck Co. NC. Latter Henry and Anne moved to Halifax Co. NC where they died. Their youngest son Isaac Cooper Perkins, my grgrgrandfather moved with his sisters and brothers after Anne's death, to Wilkes Co. GA. Three of their children moved to TN.
Seems that JOHN COOPER, a brother of Elizabeth Cooper, moved to Chester or Spartanburg, SC and lived there until his death.

While researching the "Capps" family, I ran across the "Coopers". My great-grandmother was Annie Jeanette Cooper, born 1872. She was married to my great-grandfather, William Meek Capps, born 1870.
  • Annie's parents were John H. Cooper and Emily Baker.
  • John H. Cooper's parents were John and Nancy Cooper.
  • John Cooper's parents were Isaiah Cooper, b. 1795, & Faith? b. 1798.
I do know for a fact that Annie Jeanette Cooper was living in York County, SC. I believe there is a connection to a Cooper family living in NC, also. If you find any connection between these relatives of mine and your research, will you please let me know. Thanks. Would like to exchange information on these families. Posted: 02 Apr. 1997

Hi!! I was just looking at your SC marriage info and I have two questions. When I got to the bottom of the C's (or D's, I can't remember), that was all the info. Is there more and I'm unable to access it? My second question is about COOPER's. I go to a Peter COOPER, whose father I believe to be Adam. Are you familiar with this line? I believe they received Rev War land grants. I have no info whatsoever on Adam, but Peter was born late 1700's. Thanks.

I'm interested in the Stacy COOPER of Union County, SC. I note you are interested in that line also.
Was he the son of Elizabeth STACY, daughter of old Symon STACY of York County, VA? Robert STACY of Spartanburgh is from this line, also Ann STACY who married Shadrack Nolen/Nowlen/Knowland and lived for a time in Union Co., SC. I do not see much information on the STACY families of SC. George STACY/Stasy/Statia lived in Clarendon and Sumpter Co.,SC and owned land there in 1780's. He removed to Monroe Co., AL about 1810 or so. He lived on Sammy's Swamp, Black River. I've never been able to locate this area on a map. Do you have any idea where that location might be? There is a probate (1830) for a Dicy STACY in Union County, SC that I only recently found in records available on GenWeb/Union Co., SC. Is she the wife of Robert STACY?
Benjamin STACY married Lucy COOPER 16 Aug 1787 in Sussex County, VA and his father was born in York Co., VA. He would be related to Robert STACY of Spartanburgh (Cousin). There is a definite tie to the COOPER's, do you know what it is?

Paul, In reviewing the list of SC marriages I found some COOPER's, one of which interests me greatly. I also noticed you research COOPER's. My Thomas COOPER wrote his will in 1810 in Blount County, TN. He called his wife ABBY in his will and named one of his daughters Abby. I have been unable to trace him back from 1810. The family also seems to disappear. His wife is the enigma. When I found Margaret Magdalen Beauchamp married to Thomas COOPER in 1728 I couldn't help but wonder but I think it's wishful thinking for his son, James, my ancestor, was born in 1803 in TN. My Thomas was probably frisky but surely not that frisky at that age.:-)
Would like to share COOPER information with you. I also have Morgan's but they married into the COOPER's in AR. So far their trail has been TN>AL>AR>OK Somewhere in there they found time to court and marry wives from GA and MO.
They put more miles on horses and wagons than I do my Honda. [email protected] Posted: 02 Apr. 1997

I noticed that you are interested in hearing from anyone who is researching the COOPER family in Union County, S.C.
I'm currently researching my own COOPER line. I've traced it as for back as a William COOPER Sr. who was probably born in NJ around 1720. He married Miss Lydia "Lidy" Clark. They lived in Bucks County, PA from about 1753 to 1771. At least one of their sons, William Jr. was born there.
About 1771 they moved to Union County, SC. They had the following children, all of whom were unmarried when they moved to SC:
  • 1. Jacob COOPER,
  • 2. William COOPER Jr.,
  • 3. Stacy COOPER, (born 1757 in Pa.)
  • 4. Nathan COOPER,
  • 5. Samuel COOPER,
  • 6. Jeremiah COOPER,
  • 7. Jonathan COOPER,
  • 8. Sarah COOPER, (1767-1842) m. Peter Phillips (1762-1820)
  • 9. David COOPER,
  • 10. Joseph COOPER, and
  • 11. Hannah COOPER,
I think William Sr died at Union County NC. Several of his grandsons, Moses, Jesse, & Eli (sons of Stacy COOPER) took their families and settled in Paulding County, GA sometime after 1850. It's no problem finding them after that point because most of them are buried in New Hope Cemetary in Paulding County on down to my grandparents. That's one county west of where I live.
I am, however, having a hard time figuring out where Willam COOPER, Sr was born and where his ancestors may have been. The only information I have on him came from a biography in the Union County Heritage, 1981. It suggested that he was probably a quaker born in NJ, but I haven't been able to make a connection there. If you have any suggestions for finding out more about him, I'd be grateful. Thanks!

Hi, I am searching for information on the Cooper's of Union Co SC late 1700's to mid 1800's. William Cooper and wife Mary Polly Harrison came to Union Co. after the Rev. War.
His grandson James William Cooper had a dau Elizabeth who married Dr. Thomas Russell Littlejohn 16 Feb 1845.
Is this the Cooper line you are researching? I have a lot of information on this line, but as always I am searching for more.

Dear Mr. Sarrett,
My name is Roger H. Cooper. I read with interest all the names which I have run across in my research on the query page under your name.
I want to run a few names past you to see if you perhaps have any information on them. I'll give the Reader's Digest version.
My great-great-great grandfather was Zachariah Cooper was married to Mary Ann Quinn. It has been told his father's name was Noah Cooper, though I have not been able to establish that. Mary Ann's father was John Quinn and her mother was Betsy Morgan. John Quinn's father was John Quinn Sr. and his mother was Margaret Fondren (could be and may be Fondron).
Zachariah and Mary Ann moved, with the children which were born at that, time to St. Clair Co., Alabama around 1816 or 1818. One of the children, Salena A. Cooper, married John Quinn Sarrett on December 20, 1842 in St, Clair Co. Ala. I have no other record of Salena and John except they moved to Arkansas and had a daughter named Margaret.
As I stated, I have not been able to establish any link from Zachariah to Noah so far, even though several people have also said that is the unestablished information they also have.
Some other names or marriages which you may recognize are Margaret Quinn and Samuel Sarrett, Daniel Quinn and Mary Morgan, John Sarrett and Mahala C. Castleberry married 08 May 1857 with the note that the groom had been married before, and I list several Quinns marrying several Hoods, who are also connected to me.
It seems several families from the York Co./Spartanburg area moved to St. Clair Co.
Any information you can share would be appreciated. I have a copy of the marriage record of Selena Cooper and John Sarrett from St. Clair Co. if this turns out to be something you could use.
Sincerely,
Roger H. Cooper

I just saw where you are interested in some families that I have. Namely Foster/Cole (My ancestor Isaac Foster married a Nancy Cole, from South Carolina (I believe Union Co., SC) They lived in Copiah Co., Mississippi.
As far as the Quinn/Cooper family: Zechariah Cooper, S.Carolina, married Mary Quinn about 1804/05. I'm not sure if Zechariah and Mary moved to Alabama, but their daughter Lucinda (Cinderella) was married to John Looney at St. Clair Co., and later lived at Coosa County, AL.
I hope there is a connection, please let me know if there is. Sarah Hamiter, [email protected]

I am descended from Zachariah COOPER through his daughter Cinderella who married John Looney. In the archives of the Spartenburg/York Co. pages you had a statement that said the Coopers moved to AL with several other families which included the Looney family. My information has the Looneys coming from TN. Can you enlighten me on what you know about this?
If you have not updated your information on Zachariah's children since that note was posted I think I can help with some of that. If you are interested, please let me know.
I was also very interested in your information about Mary Ann Quin's family.

I found your family tree on Ancestry.com. I thought you might be interested to know that with the finding of John Cotton Cooper's will in Mississippi a few years ago Zachariah was named as a son of John Cotton Cooper.

Paul,
Do you connect to any of these young's ?
If you look at Benjamin Holcomb's will, 14th Oct. 1795. Union Co., SC. His will is witnessed by Elijah H. Cooper, and a Young (can't make out the first name)
Now, William Cooper and wife Polly in 1806 in Union Co., SC a reference is made to a John Young, Jesse Young, and a Wm. Young. Are these Youngs connected to the Young who witnessed along with Elijah H. Cooper?
The will of Benjamin Holcomb... I'll bet they are, no slam dunk proof. As you know, Elijah H. Cooper married a Greer. The genealogist Brent Holcomb wrote the Greer Book, He is of the same line of Holcombs and Greers. Gary COOPER, [email protected]
