At the age of 22 (bfr1761) he married the 22 year old Miss Margaret "Peggy" HOPPER. (d/o M/M Thomas HOPPER) b. abt 1739; d. Grandfather JAMES ELLIS married PEGGY HOPPER. He and his brother came from Massachusetts, his brother settling in Lincoln County, North Carolina. JAMES ELLIS settled near Ellis's Ferry, Cleveland County, on the Broad River. His children were born as follows:
     1. MARY ELLIS, b. 1761;
     2. WILLIAM, b. 1767;
     3. ANN, b. 1769;
     4. REBECCA, b. 1771;
     5. JAMES, b. 1773;
     6. ELIZABETH, b. 1776;
     7. BENJAMIN, b. 1782;

     10. NANCY birth dates not on hand.

  Possible Record Problem!
#1. The only record this writer has found for the ELLIS family in "Massachusetts" was a record dated 27 May 1663 a one Joseph ELLIS was listed as "Freeman." and no records found in Lincoln Co., NC. for Census 1790 to 1830..prs Other records indicate James ELLIS was born in Kent Co., Maryland NOT Massachusetts. ..prs

"The history of the ELLIS family in Cleveland Co., NC. began in the middle 1700's according to known records and deeds. Two sons of James ELLIS settled on the South side of the the Broad River near the ELLIS Ferry on land purchased from Edward DICKSON in 1773. Mr. DICKSON had owned the land since 1763 which he received from through a Grant."

Page 19 HARRIET C. ELLIS and DAVID H. GRAMBLING, were married in Sep. 2, 1856. JOHN SIMPSON BOBO, was married to JOSIA CHAPIN, May 4, 1890. Mrs. DAVID H. GRAMBLING, daughter of J. R. ELLIS, and are living at the JOHN ELLIS old place, near the ferry. She had [Pg 20 ] only one child, BENJAMIN BRECKENRIDGE ELLIS GRAMBLING who died June 1890, unmarried. MELVINA NARCISA ELLIS, third daughter of J. R. ELLIS, married J. C. CARTER, a Baptist Minister.
