I have a hand written listing (3 pages) of all Humphries and Sarratts that are buried in Providence Baptist Church in Gaffney SC. Includes:
James E and Elizabeth Sarratt,
Samuel Q and Mary Hope,
James M and Julia A and children, etc.
Are you interested in that listing?
I also have a narrative on the Humphries family written by J C Coleman Humphries in 1932 that tells about William, John, William III and John III Humphries (including where they're buried) if you're interested in that.
I noted an Alpha listing of all the Sarratts that you printed out for one of my aunt's friends (Lipscomb) in 1991. Looks like you're the expert on the Sarratt clan so you may have all this info already but just in case...
BTW: There's a gravesite for the SERVICE family down the road from my dad's, it's enclosed in a nice wrought iron fence on the Ruppe property. As far as Mr. Ruppe knows, no ones ever visited...in case you ever run across an inquiry on that family.

Henry SURRATT(E)
Date: Thu, 6 Jan 2000 2:30:19 AM Eastern Standard Time
Subj: Surratt/Surratte/Surrette help Greetings:
All leads point to you. I've just begun my ancestral search for surname Surratt/Surratte/Surrette. In my online searching so far, I have come across your name/address as" THE de facto authority on this clan." So, if you don't mind, I'd like to pick your brain--or tree in this case--for information.
Of particular interest is finding birth, death and marriage dates of Henry SURRATT(E) and wife Rosana Blanton, my maternal gggrandparents, and their children. Both ggggrandparents were born into slavery, him in Cleveland County, N.C.; her in Cherokee County, S.C. They had 12 children:
1. Nancy m. Berry Hardin;
2. Nettie m. James Young;
3. Harriet m. Curage Lattimore;
4. Alice m. Riley Green;
5. Nervie m. Charles McBrayer;
6. Susie;
7. Ardenia m. Major Robbs;
8. Jocie m. Schofield Whisnant;
9. Texas (may have been Texia or Texanna) m. Tom Carson;
10. Thomas;
11. Johnny died as infant; and
12. Augustus James. *1865-1963 a98y
Do any of these names ring a bell? The only known information from SSDI is that Augustus James SURRATTE was born 6 Jan. 1865 and died __ December 1963. N/A NC. SSD# 240-62-6387, NC.
Mrs. Texas/Texia/Texanna (SURRATTE) CARSON was my ggrandmother, and my grandmother, Alice Carson Guthrie, always said her mother's name was Texanna. Her headstone has Texia, and my great-aunt apparently told a great-cousin (and family historian) that Tex's name was Texas. Such confusion.
Anyway, just yesterday, I subscribed to your listserv digest and have begun reading the family Web site--an incredible undertaking, no doubt, but one full of wonderful information for those of us just starting out. Thanks for paving the way.
Any help you can give would be appreciated.
Gwendolyn Coley, Atlanta, E-Mail: [email protected]
Thanks for the kind words, but for some reason I don't have Henry & Rosanna (BLANTON) SURRATT family in my database? Do you know where they were living and in what year Census? Do you have any more dates? Please get back to me to see what I can find out. ...prs
2nd E-Mail: Date: Thu, 8 Jan 2000 2:30:19 AM Eastern Standard Time
Unfortunately, I don't have any other dates. My research is only about six months old, and it's taken me that long to get names. I am planning a trip to North Carolina early next week and hope to gather more information. Part of my problem (and I suppose yours initially) is with the variant spellings of the name. Most of the information I have so far has Surratte, but I can't seem to find much with that spelling. Even Augustus' name was listed in SSDI withouth the "e" at the end. Living family members use the "e" and swear their parents and siblings do, too. One great-uncle even changed the spelling altogether to Surette.
Once I'm back from North Carolina, I hope to be able to provide more dates.

Melinda (Unk) 1) SARRATT, 2) QUEEN
Date: Tue, 1 Feb 2000 8:33:16 PM Eastern Standard Time
Mr. Sarrett:
My name is Anita Payne and my email is [email protected]. I have been trying to find information on my great grandfather and great uncle. I am new at using a computer, but I have searched your files. My great grandfather's last name was Queen. I do not know his first name. Also, my great uncle was his brother, and I only know his last name Queen. Melinda was married to my great grandfather Queen. He went off to fight in the Civil War when she was pregnant with my grandfather Joshua Dolphus Pinkney Queen. He was killed, and never saw his son. Mrs. Melinda (Unknown) QUEEN then married a man named Sarrett. I do not know his first name either. I suppose that he died, because Mrs. Melinda (Unknown) QUEEN, SARRATT came to live with my grandfather in Gaffney, South Carolina around 1914 or 15. I don't know any more about them. I do have pictures on glass of my great grandfather and great uncle in their Civil War uniforms. If you have any information on Melinda, please email me. Otherwise, I will keep on searching.
Thanks, Anita Payne, E-Mail: [email protected]
Anita, Thanks for the E-Mail
I have no Sarratt/Sarrett/Surratt record of marring into the QUEEN family.
I do have a "Malinda SARRATT" b. c1843 SC that I can't account for.
In the 1900 Census for Cherokee Co., SC. I have Henry M. Sarratt, a56y 2nd s/o Irvin & Amanda (LITTLEJOHN) SARRATT.
Henry Mostella SARRATT m. Mary Lucinda GAFFNEY bfr 1870 in Spartanburg Co., SC. a d/o Wm. G. & Polly (SMITH) GAFFNEY. Henry M. & Mary only had one daughter Jessica Love SARRATT, b. 14 Jul 1870
[1900 Census, Reel 1240, E.D. 0144, F.G. 0010]
H/H Henry M. SURRATT, age 56 b. 1844 SC
Wife: Mary L. (GAFFNEY), age 42 b. 1858 SC
1. Malinda Sarratt, age 57 b. 1843 SC, No Return ----?
2. Julia Homer, age 56 b. 1844 NC, listed as "Sister"
3. Willie Sarratt, age 9 b. 1891 SC, listed as "Servant"
I can not find any "relationship" of these three people with Henry or Mary L. (GAFFNEY) brothers or sisters, all are accounted for.
Any light you can shed on this would be appreciated! ...prs

Paul:
I just reviewed lists of Humphries and Sarratts printed 11/99 and wish to first: thank you for the many Sarratt names that I will use for research when I get into the Sarratt side of my grandparents and next:
I wish to request that the Humphries list pages be corrected. Of all the Humphries' cousin Felix Turner has given you only 8 are truly Sarratt connectd including the name of my father, Royce W Humphries, Sr. 5-7-1903 7-21-1980 Felix had you list twice. Seven of the eight are from my father and Felix's mother's siblings and one is from another Sarratt sister who married Humphries (she had five children). I have been researching Humphries connection for three years and my research is proven before entered on any lists.
Please help if you can.
Bobbie Joe Humphries Parker, E-Mail: [email protected]
Bobbie,
Thanks for the E-Mail
The comments above are to vague and are not specific enough for me to make any changes into our 20,0000 persons database.
I do believe your Royce W Humphries, Sr. 5-7-1903 7-21-1980 is in Wm. "Joe" HUMPHRIES & Maggie SARRATT's Family Group (FG) (See Attached) His family (Royce) is Not Traced in our database. I was looking through all of the Sarratt files you have on the web and found that my grandfather's name is listed wrong. His name is Benrhyne Sarratt. [FG 1459]
Son of Luther Bonner & Mary R. (ROUNDTREE) SARRATT. [FG 1052
GSon of John M. & Louisa (MORGAN) SARRATT, [FG 1051]
GGSon of Obediah & Sarah (BONNER) SARRATT,[FG 26]
GGGSon of Anthony & Letettea (ELLIS) SARRATT, [FG 27]
Another note you may want is the death of my father's sister, Flora Ann Sarratt Martin on 6/7/99. [FG 1467] She was buried in Grassy Pond Baptist Church Cemetery. Since we last talked and I gave you information on this line of the family, there have been several children born. The daughter of Flora Ann Sarratt Martin, Gina Lou Martin Love and her husband David Scott Love [FG 1468] gave birth to a daughter Annah Kristen Love on 3/11/98. [#2599] The son of Elsa Jayne Sarratt, [FG 1465]
Nick Toro Price and his wife Tanya Robinson gave birth to a son Nicholas Brian Price 12/16/97. My eldest daughter Angela [#5591 m. #9163 cf 9191 married Robert Martin and has since given birth to a daughter Sarah Elizabeth Martin on 1/17/2000. My middle daughter Tara April Lambert Owen [#5594, m. 1) 9192, 2) 9193 has since divorced and remarried to David Martin and has given birth to a daughter, Brittney Faith Martin on 12/17/99. I think this should adequately update this line of the family.
Thanks again. Karen Sarratt Denton, E-Mail: [email protected]

Dear Mr. Surratt..I am looking for information that perhaps can help us locate our lost family. My father was born 1910 and died in 1935, name Claude. They were a family of 7, I believe. Parents died young, children sent to an orphange. Names our:
Claude, Alma, Paul, Carl, Odel, Olvita (not sure of spelling) and possibly Earl.
Have photo of grandmother and my father and aunts and uncles, but no grandparents names. They were from S. Carolina. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank You

Dear Mr. Surratt..
I think you have just solved some of the mystery and given us some more information that is priceless. I guess we have to find county records for orphange in York County. If I may ask, who are your parents and what is your link? We could be related. Thank you again so very much.

I am searching for a link to my father's parents. My father born in 1910 in Gaffney. Parents died young. Children put in orphange, at proper age they went to NYC and area. My grandparents had 7 children:
Claude, Paul, Alma, Odell, Carl, Olivita and possible an Earl. My father died at age 35. I would love to know where grandparent are buried and if I have first cousins.

My sister and I are overjoyed at the information that you were so kind to send. I believe you asked for more information about our family. I will tell you what I remember. My dad died when I was 10 so unfortunately it is sketchy. Again, my dad was Claude with siblings:
Alma, Paul, O'Dell, Carl and Mildred. There was not an Earl. From what I can remember my grandfather was a veterinarian, my grandmother might have been a nurse. My aunt Alma went on to become a nurse, my father owned a resturant at the time of his death. They all lived in Queens County,NY.
Mildred died of suicide in Astoria, NY and left behind an 18 month old baby girl. We will try and trace that.
My aunt Alma had two boy Charles and Ronald Pendergast by husband Earl. Unfortunately, Alma died young also.
I do not know what happen to Paul or Carl. O'Dell was married to a minister in SC.
Mr. Surratt, I hope this is not an invasion but any information or websites that might help my siser and I would be appreciated.
We would like to visit GF and GM graves someday. My dad was a wonderful man and until this day I miss him.
Sincerely, Claudette Sarratt Tate, E-Mail: [email protected]
Claudette,

Samuel Edward Sarratt's mother was Martha Elizabeth Parker youngest dau of Elijah Eleazer and Mary Margaret Carrothers Parker.
Mary Hope (Parker) Sarratt was one of her older sisters. After the death of Josiah SARRATT and Martha before 1877, [prsjrFG 679] guardianship of the three living Sarratt children of Josiah and Martha was approved making them guardians of Samuel Q. and Mary Hope (Parker) Sarratt - who were married Jan 1871 per Noble Sarratt's booklet and family records. Mary Hope Parker Sarratt is/was my great grandmother.

I have just read a serious error in your posting of Samuel Quinn Sarratt lineage and Pray for this to be corrected. I do not have any idea who sent this information to you regarding the marriages of Samuel Quinn Sarratt but you may rest assured that the statement that Samuel Q. Sarratt was previously married prior to his marriage to Mary Hope Parker is ERRONEOUS.
If you will check your census records for Union Co., SC, you will find Mary Hope Parker living in the house with Eleazer Parker and also there is an infant son named Robert Edward Lee PARKER who later assumes the name of Sarratt after his mother Mary Parker married Sam Sarratt.
In the 1870 census for Spartanburg Co., you will find Sam Sarratt living at home with his parents and no son is with him. I will greatly appreciate it if you will remove this fictitious marriage from the record of Samuel Sarratt.
There are skeletons in many closets but we must not allow ourselves to stoop to changing the record to meet the purpose of hiding our ancestors past. It happened whether or not we like it.
I would like to urge you to be careful of what you are duped into posting on the internet. This very thing is what makes the internet an unreliable source of information. I enjoy reading your information but never take anything at face value because you do have people, such as Beth Lawrence whom I suspect sent this ridiculous information to you, sending any and everything they choose to invent to meet their needs.
These Sarratts of whom I speak, Samuel and Mary Hope Parker, SARRATT are my great grandparents and I have every legal document available, even certified census records from the SC State Dept. of Archives and History, to prove my Sarratt-Parker lineage. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. If I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to call upon me But I do believe you can clear this up yourself by referring to the census records which you have posted.

Listing shows Norah as a child and a statement by her name "No Record!!!"
This is proof that someone is sending information to you without knowing anything about this family except what he/she conjures up or reads with out researching. "Norah" was recorded, lived and died after having a family.
I cannot bring myself to contribute any further information re Norah because my work will fall into the hands of those who do not wish to get to the truth and really exert energy to find ancestors. Below is the information on their son William.

Dear Paul,
I am sending some corrections to your Samuel Sarratt file for you to make at your convenience.
1. Mrs. Mary Hope (Parker) SARRATT's nickname was Molly instead of Polly. She is listed as Molly Parker on the death certificates of some of her children and Mary Parker on others.
2. "2nd Dau: Maggie E." should read Margaret Elizabeth "Maggie" Sarratt. "Maggie" was nickname.
3. "2nd Son: Willey A." should read: William A. Sarratt b. November 1878 (exact date not given in obituary from The GAffney Ledger) Union Dist., SC. died August 13, 1903, Earls, Cleveland Co., NC of typhoid fever bur. Providence Baptist Church Cemetery, Gaffney, SC. The obituary states he "would have been 25 years old in November" The issue of the paper is dated August 14, 1903.
4. "3rd Dau. M. Beady" should read Mary Beatrice "Beady" Sarratt. "Beady" was a nickname.
5. "2nd son J. Jack" should read John Quincy "Jack" Sarratt. "Jack" was a nickname.
6. Moris may be or may not be correct for the 3rd son. I find him listed in some obituaries and census records as Maurice and also as Morris. I am inclined to think he was Maurice due to the fact this name was used by others. But I do not have the proof and do not know what is on his tombstone. I do not know where he is buried. If I ever find it, I shall let you know.
Thank you for your efforts. Margaret "Peggy" Humphries Dillard, [email protected]

Paul,
I am actually related through my husband. Cora Sarratt, who was Eugenius SARRATT daughter is my husbands great grandmother. There has been some question about who her mother is. I have sources that say just L.L. Sarratt, Lucenia Sarratt, and Letita Linda Sarratt. In Noble Lucius Sarratts' genealogy it gives no mention of Cora Sarratt. Eugenious (Eugene) is definitely listed as her father. She (Cora) was born 7/11/1918 and died 7/26/1949. The death cerfificate lists Lucenia SARRATT as her mother. I cannot verify the information. If you can help me, I really would appreciate it.
Thanks, Randi Powell, [email protected]

Paul,
I have been working on this family for many years and have emailed back and forth with you before.
Today, I believe that I have found the connection I have been looking for. Ida Sarratt (daughter of Greenbery G.B. Sarratt) married Joseph Eson Daniel Sr. b. 7/18/1870 d. 1/16/1948 Gaffney, S.C. and buried 1/18/1948 at Providence Baptist Church cemetery, Gaffney, Cherokee Co., SC. Ida was born 1873 and died 1906, buried at Providence Baptist Church cemetery.
I am a decendant of Joseph E. Daniel Sr. and have been looking for the parents of Ida. I have taken a picture of her marker and of Josephs but did not know that her father was there although I had been told that he was. With so many Sarratts buried at that cemetery, it was not apparent to me at the time.
Below is an email I received from David Daniel:

Subject: RE: Calvin Jackson Daniel
The Joe E. Daniel you refer to was my grandfather. He was killed when I was 12 years old. He was murdered by a mentally retarded black man whom he knew from the area. He ran a general store prior to the depression, but lost everything. He really never recovered from the loss and lived alone near the Broad River which runs through Cherokee County, SC, very near the North Carolina line. He taught me how to shoot a shotgun and a 22 rifle. He was an expert shot. He had four wives, three of which died, the fourth left him and headed back to the mountains around Hendersonville, NC. My father, Joe Jr., once tried to find her but could not. My father's mother was wife number 3, who died shortly after she gave birth to my father. His stepmother and he did not get along which resulted in my father dropping out of school in the eighth grade to wander about the country, joining the Navy only to be kicked out because he was underage. He and others hopped freight trains during the depression and traveled to California and back several times. He was a member of the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) in those days of the country's attempts to recover from the depression. I was sent a letter recently written by my grandfather to one of his grandsons who was in a German prison camp during WWII. I was quite taken by the expert handwriting and the perfect composition of the letter. I had no idea that he was so literate, which begs the question about his education. When I knew him as a boy he was elderly, probably had Parkinson's disease, and talked little. However, he knew how to please a grandson as he skinned catfish with pliers and knife and pitched them into a hot pan filled with oil boiling over a wood fire along the Broad River while my father and his half brother fished for more. I'd better stop and get to work. Hope this stuff in not boring. DED.
According to the Spartanburg Herald, the obituary appeared in the following paper. (I do not have a copy of this) Spartanburg Herald: DANIEL, JOE E., SR. 77, Gaffney, 1-18-48 p. 1

Paul,
do you know what was the occupation of Anthony Surratt 1777-1861? A deed mentions A. Surrat, F L Treadwell, & C. agents for Reuben Blanton Dec'd. I wonder if this is a law firm. But they are not listed as administrators. Could it be that they were hired to collect debts? Or maybe they were his creditors and were assigned all of his debts due. Any idea? Bev, [email protected]

SMILEY, Mary Idell (Sarratt) Information
Dated: Sat, Jul 4, 2009 at: 6:38 am
Here is correction concerning Mary Idell Sarratt Smiley, who was born October 29, 1912 in Gaffney, SC.
She married John Carlisle Smiley, a Methodist minister, on January 28, 1933. She died on January 30, 2005. She is buried in Orangeburg, SC.
Idell's father was Carl Melrose Sarratt (February 17, 1880-May 3, 1919). He is buried in Limestone Cemetery, Gaffney, SC. Idell's mother is Hortese (spelled as I have it) Cunningham Sarratt (1884-1920). She is buried in Limestone Cemetery, Gaffney, SC, but in a different plot than Carl Melrose.
Carl died a year before Horsese in the flu epidemic. Hortese was wreaked by the flu and died a year later.
Carl Melrose's parents were Iverson G. Sarratt and Mary E. Kennedy.
The siblings of Mary Idell Sarratt Smiley were in order of birth:
1. Earl Sarratt, born 1903;
2. Alma (called Betty) Sarratt, born 1905, who married Jack Pendergrass, whose children were Charles and Ronnie;
3. Paul Sarratt, born 1907;
4. Claude Sarratt, born 1909, who married a girl named Nancy, whose children were Nancy and Claudette;
5. Mary Idell Sarratt Sarratt, who married John Carlisle Smiley, whose children were Barbara, John, Maxie, and Janet;
6. Carl Melrose Sarratt, Jr., who married Martha Rowell, whose children were Carletta and Rita; and
7. Mildred Oveda Sarratt.
When Hortese Cunningham Sarratt died, the children were raised in an orphanage in York, SC.
I, personally, knew Carl Melrose, Jr., and Alma (Betty).
The rest of the family is almost unknown to me.
Best regards, John C. Smiley, Jr., son of Mary Idell Sarratt., E-Mail: [email protected]
