SMITH, Elisa (SURRATT) KNAPP, Mrs. Date: Date: 17 Mar 2001 11:13:28 AM Pacific Standard Time Source: [email protected] Subject: [SC] Smith, Knapp, Surratt -- Charleston [Charleston Co.] SC Does anyone have any information on any of the following names? Captain John G. Smith (1847 - 1933) Charleston, SC. He was captain of a tugboat (Royal Arch) which helped capture the whale in Charleston harbor around 1880. (The whale skeleton is now on display at the Charleston Museum). He was also a member of the Aetna Fire Department and is buried at Magnolia Cemetery, Charleston, SC in the Aetna Fire Department section. Capt Smith married Elisa Knapp. They had a son Grover and a daughter Ethel Josephine. Information about Ethel Josephine says that she was born in 1890 at No. 9 Tradd St, Charleston SC (this is now an empty lot), so assume Capt Smith and his family were living at that address. Elisa Knapp's mother's name was E Surratt (this may not be the correct spelling) Knapp Brown. (Am assuming that Surratt was her maiden name and she married twice). Thanks -- Jon [email protected] We would like to exchange information on this SURRATT Family. ..prs ...prs |
