Laurensville Herald, Gaffney, Cherokee Co., SC. -- Jul. 11, 1911 White Woman Kills, Negro Baby At Blacksburg, SC. |
News reached the city yesterday
from Blackburg to the effect that a killing had
taken place near there on the Plantation of a
man named Mack BYERS.
A woman named Mrs. Frances (BYERS) SARRATT,
wife of Ira P. SARRATT, had killed
a Negro baby, two years old, named Ruth DUNCAN,
a daughter of a Negro woman names Flora DUNCAN.
The Coroner, accompanied by Sheriff THOMAS and
Deputy Sheriff Henry LOCKHART and Joe WATKINS,
at once went to the scene where an inquest was
held. The affair occurred in the middle of the
road in front of
Mack BYERS house.
Mr. BYERS
is a brother of the woman who did the shooting. The affair occurred in the County, about three miles from Blacksburg and about 12 miles from Gaffney. INQUEST HELD At the Coroner's inquest held late yesterday afternoon the facts were related as follows: Lil DUNCAN the Negro woman stated that Ira P. SARRATT, (a53y) husband of the woman who did the shooting, and Pete BYERS, a brother of the woman, both white men came to her house in the afternoon and announced their intention of spending the night their, they stated however, that within a short time the entire party decided to go to Blacksburg, the trip being made in a buggy. They returned from Blackburg shortly after dark and she stopped at the home of her mother, the two men leaving her there. It seems that about 1 o'clock she in company with another Negro woman started to her own home, but when she reached the cross roads she saw Mrs. SARRATT approaching with a double-barrel shotgun in her hand. The DUNCAN woman states that when she saw Mrs. SARRATT raise the gun that she shifted the baby from her right arm to her left in order to protect it from the shot which she felt sure would be fired, but as this was done, the entire load took affect in the baby's head and side, death being almost instantaneous. The Coroner's jury returned a verdict that the child _____ to its death by a gunshot wound instrument in the hands of Mrs. SARRATT. It is generally supposed that the shooting was done with intention of killing Lil DUNCAN and was caused by the ride which the Negro woman took with Ira P. SARRATT, husband of the accused women. No withstanding the fact a diligent search was made by Sheriff THOMAS and his deputies for the woman who did the shooting upto this time, she has not been apprehended, although her arrest is momentarily expected. A search for the woman has been continued since Sunday and this morning Deputy WATKINS was near the river preparing to renew the search when he was met by Mrs. SARRATT and her husband, Ira SARRATT. They stated that they were coming to town to surrender. Mrs. SARRATT when seen in the jail by a reporter late this afternoon, said that she had no statement to make and refused to discuss the matter, saying that the affair was "one best known to herself" She stated that she had not engaged counsel. Laurensville Herald, Cherokee Co., SC. -- Nov. 22, 1920 TWO CHEROKEE MEN KILLED EACH OTHER |
I.P. SARRATT and REVIS DAWSON killed each other at
SARRATT'S home, just over the county
line of Cherokee county, yesterday afternoon at 6 o'clock.
DAWSON was SARRATT'S grandson and was about
25 years of age [b. 1895]. SARRATT was 67 [b. 1853]. Going to the SARRATT'S house, DAWSON, it is said, sat down and talked quietly with the old man, showing a copy of the divorce which he had recently obtained from his wife in N.C. DAWSON suggested that they walk out to the hog pen. According to the statement of Mrs. SARRATT, who said that her husband reached to the mantel and took down his revolver, which was in a scabbard and that DAWSON saw him do this, then Mrs. SARRATT continued, she heard her husband say, "If you do I will" and then the shooting commenced. DAWSON emptied his pistol and SARRATT shot twice. Only one ball took effect in SARRATT, he being shot through the right breast. Both men died immediately after being shot, neither of them speaking. DAWSON'S father lives within a few miles of Gaffney, SC. Source: Sent to us from [REF:#004] David Strickland |

Per Ira P. Death Cert., the Informant (His wife) listed he would be buried in the
Buffalo Bapt. Church Cemetery, but when Moss & Amos did their Cemetery Book, Vol. 2, in 1984
[SFA-REF:#67.1] they did NOT list Ira P. as being buried here! On Oct 4th, 1997, when W.D. Bill Floyd, Dennis Morgan, & Judy Parker-Proctor did their servey, they also did NOT list that Ira P. SARRATT was buried here! So If he is buried here, he dosn't have a Headstone..prs. [In 1997 their were 319 Internments, first buried 1811, last buried 1977..prs] |
