Major Record Problem! This family has been erroneous represented by Mrs. Glenda (Surrett) Kennedy!
It was first brought to my attention on June 19, 1998, on the "Surratt Family Genealogy Forum"
"My Great-Grandfather was Grandville Surrett/Surratt, b. abt 1833 in France.
He and a brother came to the US by way of Canada.
He settled in Rockwood, Tn.
He had the following Children:
John, Martha and Mary.
His spouce's name is unknown. His second marriage was to Lucinda Scott. Children by this marriage are:
Frances (Frankie) Alpha,
George, and
Willy.
Any information on first wife or his brother would be greatly appreciated." [REF:#003.1]
Possible Record Problem #1 In [REF:#003] list 1881, Rockwood, Roane Co., TN. Granville H. SURRETT, was said to have owned & operated a ferry on the Tennessee River, and to have owned land on Look-Out Mountain, but sold it. The soil was too rocky to till.

[In the 1870 Census he list Occupation: "Fisherman"]
[In the 1880 Census he list Occupation: "Ferryman"]
Possible Record Problem #2 In [REF:#0333.003] States:
"My great-grandfather was Grandville Surrett/Surratt b. abt. 1833 in France. He and a brother came to the US by way of Canada. He settled in Rockwood, [Roane Co.] Tn.
[I don't think Granvile was born in France, in the 1850 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census he indicated he was born in Tennessee.
I do believe his GGrandfather was born in France!
I think he had 4 Brothers, 3 born in TN. 1 born in Virginia ..prs
Possible Record Problem #3 In [REF:#0333.003] States: "Granville had the following 3 children:
John, Martha and Mary."
[Census records indicate he had 6 children with his 1st Wife:
1. 1st Dau: Martha E.,
2. 2nd Dau: Nancy J.,
3. 1st Son: Wm. F.,
4. 3rd Dau: Sarah,
5. 4th Dau: Ellen,
6. 2nd Son: John R.,
(He had 4 more Children with 2nd Wife ...prs)
Possible Record Problem #4 In [REF:#333.003] States: "His 1st spouse's name is unknown. His second marriage was to Lucinda Scott. Children by this 2nd marriage are:
Frances (Frankie), Alpha, George, and Willy.
We agree with Glenda, on this, but she does Not have them in birth order;
1. 1st Son: George Washington, b. 17 Apr 1881
2. 1st Dau: Frances "Frankie", b. 02 Dec 1887
3. 2nd Dau: Slpha Mae, b. __ ___ 1890
4. 2nd Son: Willie Barton, b. 07 Dec 1895 ..prs
Possible Record Problem #5 JONES Children? In See: 1880 Census, Stockton Valley, Loudon Co., TN.
Lucinda SCOTT, age 27yrs, was living with her Parents.
In same household David J. SCOTT, age .6mth listed "Grandson"
In this same Census, we find 3 SCOTT Children, (b. same age) living with Job & Mary JONES Famiy.

[per REF:#003.8] and [M-Bk.,Pg#]Possible Record Problem! This info. came from Glenda (Surrett) Kennedy, [No Date] which she claims as "Fact"
We have found a record date of Feb. 26, 1878
but Glenda, also tells us that the young Mrs. Jane (Brimer) SURRETT, dies during "child birth" in 1874. This is 4 years before the marriage and age 13 years?...prs

George W. Surrett was my Grandfather.
He lived in several places during his lifetime.
While he resided in Chattanooga, [Hamilton Co.] Tn.,
he drove a trolley car. The trolley ran from Chattanooga to Ft.
Oglethorpe, Ga. While living in Soddy, [Hamilton Co.] Tn., he met and married my
Grandmother, Jessie Townsend.
She lived next door to Grandpa's brother,
Will and his wife, Hazel (Roberts) SURRETT.
They introduced them. My father, Johnny SURRETT was born in Soddy, TN. From there they moved on top of a mountain in Catoosa, [No Zip Idx] Tn. He moved to Louellen, [Harlan Co.] Ky in 1924. He worked in the coal mines until the 1940's when he became disabled due to inhaling poisonous gas in the mines, causing a nervous breakdown. He helped to organize the United Mine Workers Union in Harlan Co. (Bloody Harlan) He died in Highsplint, [Harlan Co., ] Ky 40828 on Dec. 6, 1951. Glenda (Surrett) Kennedy |

| Note: from [REF:#333.003] | Great Aunt Alpha and Frankie came to visit us often in Ky while my Grandpa was alive. They were great fun! Frankie was outgoing where as Alpha was more reserved. They both had a good sense of humor. They would always send a big box of goodies at Christmas time, filled with candy and fruit and presents for everyone. |
