Dear Paul,
I descend from Robert Stephenson(1758-1798) of York County, South Carolina.
My grandmother was Nora Viola Surratt born in Linden, Texas, Cass County.
Her father was William H. Surratt and her mother was Francis Liles, born 5 April 1867 and died 1915.
Any information would be appreciated

Paul,
Many thanks! I stumbled on to your website by accident. Glad I did ! Most of my Surratt information came from Dorothy Wisdom from Linden, Texas. She is now desceased.
I will send family group sheets as soon as possible. I assume your address is at your website? I will check and see if it is there.
I have concentrated my research on the Stephensons of York County, S.C. and have not done much research on the Surratts.
I do have letters, marriage license, and obituary of Mrs. I[saac]. S. Matney (second husband of Francis Liles Surratt)
It states she was born April 5,1867 in South Carolina and died March 21,1937. She came to Texas when she was two years old. She had eight daughters and six sons. Husband William Henry Surratt died in 1893. Children by William Henry were:
1. John Allen Surratt, 2/24/1883,
2. Ava Rella Surratt, 5/11/1884 and
3. Nora Viola Surratt, 1/06/1888.

Thanks, Tommy,

Paul,
Can you tell me where this line of Surratts originated? From:
Cass County Deeds Vol B-3 page 205 names the heirs of S. N. Surratt. The sale is to H. C. Surratt, who I assume was brother or son to S. N. In this document the following children are named:
1. Leola, 2. Hardy, 3. Elsie, 4. E. H., 5. Roy, 6. W.W., 7. D.W., and 8. M.B.
It also names his wife as Sallie, do you have a last name for her? Leola m. into my Doss line. I recently visited Cass County and a gentleman there told me that these Surratts were related to "the" Mary Surratt. Can you confirm or deny that tale? Thank you for any information you might provide.

Subject: Who am I?
My name is Christopher Lee Surratt, son of Aubrey Lee Surratt, son of Norman Lee Surratt. I was born in Linden, (Cass Co.) TX. It is a small town in East Texas whose population in approximatley 2300.
There are hundreds of Surratts there. My father died in 1981 when I was 7. [b. 1974] I have had little or no contact with my father's relatives since that time. I now live in Little Rock AR. I have met several Surratt's here. I find it interesting that I am caucasian and those I have met here are african americans. Can anyone tell me who I am or where the Surratt name originated?
I always thought it may have been derived from the french impressionist artist Suerrat. Please help me.

Paul,
I am going to contact my mother and stepfather. As you know from my branch of Surratts in East Texas, my mother married Aubrey Lee Surratt who died 1981. [Not in SSD#] She remarried Davis Oneal Surratt who was supposedly from another branch and not closely or even related.
She will be able to provide information regarding both branches. I truly appreciate what you have done for our family and dont want to seem critical in any way. However, if the information that you gave me 7 years ago has not been changed or updated, there are several discrepancies which I will be glad to assist you with. I can also provide health data, as this has been my primary focus because I am a 32 y/o Family Nurse Practitioner with numerous chronic heart problems in addition to psychological problems inherited from my paternal grandmother and maternal grandfather.
I know that you have determined that my mother was of an Owens/Collins marriage. Do you want further information on those families?
Please let me know and I will gather that as well.
Please bear with me as I attempt to interpret and use genealogical shorthand to decrease the amount of info you would have to sift through. I will be in contact soon, and apologize for the 7 years of absence. I was only 25 at the time of that post and failed to read any follow ups until last night. I am stable now, still in Arkansas, Craighead county. I know that there may be distant relatives in the vicinity and would appreciate your help in identifying them. You will hear from me soon. Chris SURRETT, E-Mail: [email protected]

3rd E-Mail: Date: 02 Oct 2006 5:20:07 PM Pacific Daylight Time
Paul,
While I am gathering this information to complete part of my branch, can you tell me how my father Aubrey Lee Surratt (not Aubrey Dale as listed) and Davis Oneal Surratt were related?
Chris SURRETT, E-Mail: [email protected]

Chris,
Check the last paragraph of my last E-Mail.
The "Connection" of Aubry Lee SURRATT (1930-1981) and Davis O'Neal SURRATT (1923-Liv) is that they are "Half-Second Cousin, Once Removed" (James M. SURRATT, Sr. m. 1)Polly POWELL & 2) Mrs. Mary E. TIDWELL)
The above Children Pamela Kay, Aubry Dale, are not only "Half-sister/Brother" they also are "Third Cousin's" with Randy Neal, Sandy Lou & Andy Joe.
Your father Aubrey Lee SURRETT, Jr. b. 06 Sep 1959. (Not Aubrey Dale SURRATT, b. 06 Sep 1959) s/o Aubrey Lee SURRATT Sr. b. 20 Jan 1930 - d. 27 Sep 1981?
Correct?

I am the Grand daughter of Robert Samuel Surratt of Linden Texas
He is one of the many children from James Hardy Alma Surratt.
I am interested in talking with you as I too would like to know more of my lineage. Feel free to contact me at the email address provided.
I do have additional information regarding the Surratt's from East Texas as I have a cousin that has done reasearch for approximately 7 years now.
She has traced us back to the Mayflower (according to my mothers last conversation with me on the subject)
I would like to know as much as I can as our family is getting old and I would like to pass these things down to my own children.
Thank you, Christine Willis, [email protected]

Paul,
I saw where you had the family of Travis Middleton listed on your wonderful SFA page. I was searching for the date of death for a Travis Middleton in Texas who had married into my family and was wondering if this is possibly hime.
Travis Middleton (born February 1911) married Loyce Ruth Billingsley (8 May 1912- 27 August 1946) on 30 May 1930.
I saw where the Travis Middleton that you listed married Oneida Surratt on 21 December 1947. He had a child, Robert Alan Middleton who was born 17 August 1946 (before his marriage to Oneida Surratt but days before Loyce Ruth Billingsley died in 1946).
I was wondering if this is the same Travis Middleton who was first married to Loyce Ruth Billingsley? Do you happen to have any information that would indicate if this is the same Travis Middleton?
Thanks so much!

We are interested in the SC census of 1843, for which you have transcribed the Anderson index. Could you tell us what information is contained in this census? Is it head of household only (as implied by the NdRcd which I assume is "not recorded") or does it list names (like the 1850 US census) or age groups (like the 1840 census)? We are very interested in the entry for Joseph Liles (Lyles, Lisle, Lile depending on the census) since we suspect that he was our great-great-great-grandfather. If the 1843 census lists as much as age groups there is some VERY interesting information to be had. Also where can we find copies of this census?
Many thanks! Bryan Lyles, [email protected]
Bryan,
This 1843 is a "Tax Record" for persons living in Anderson Co., SC. who paid taxies in 1843, (Head of Household) only. This "Tax Roll" is at the State Archives office.
I am interested in some Liles/Lyles from the David Lewis Liles and Martha A, MASON family, two of their children married into the SARRATT family of Spartanburg Dist. SC. This family moved (with) others to Cass Co., Texas.
Would like info on Parents of David Lewis LILES!

Paul,
David Lewis Liles was probably a cousin of our great grandfather. He was the son of Hugh Isham Liles and shows up as "Lewis" in the 1850 census. We know very little about Hugh Isham other than through the census records and what we do know can be summarized as follows:
1) He first appears buying some of his mother's estate.
2) He apparently did not own land in Oconee County -- at least there are no deeds on record. We suspect that he farmed his father's (and later his brother Joseph's) land.
3) His son Hugh Isham Jr. was a member of Hopewell Methodist Church and died in the Civil War.
4) His son David Lewis Liles was dismissed from the Confederate Army due to injury. There is a description of him in the discharge.
5) The references in Joseph Liles Senior's probate to Hugh Isham are funny. He is not listed early in the process, and later in the process it is implied but not stated that he is dead.
6) We do not know where Hugh Isham was in 1830 despite having searched the census records in multiple states.
7) We do not know the last name of Jenny, his wife. We have looked for other families in the Pickens district who are listed as coming from Virginia in the 1850 census and have drawn a blank on candidates for Jenny's family.
8) Several of the Liles family moved to Texas after the war. For example, Joseph Junior's son Jonah also moved there.
Most of this material is on our web page. We are trying to publish transcriptions of the original sources.
Other questions for you:
A) Levi and Littleton Liles apparently left Oconee County prior to the Civil War. Do you know where they moved?
B) Do you know anything about when Hugh Isham died?

Juanita DAVIS, I just read your post on the Brown county queries, as luck would have it, I have been looking for you for about 7 or 8 years. My mother-in-law is the daughter of William Lee Sides half-sister Emma Dee SIDES Calder.
She is 86 [b. 1915] and she lives with me. I recently sent to Wheeler Co., Tx. for Williams Lee death certificate to try to find out who his mother was. Effie Cheatwood was the informant and she did not know the name of his mother. I found William Lee and Sarahs marriage liscense and Effie Dees birth certificate, also a birth certificate for Roy Lee Sides, son of William Lee and Elizabeth Green Sides in Williamson county some time ago.
I have been trying to track down two other Children of William R. Sides and wife unknown, Amanda and Martin. Found Martins marriage in Colorado and read in a book information that Roy Sides had provided that Martin died in Colorado in 1940; wrote for a death certificate but was unable to find one. I got an address for a relative named Haskins from the LDS library, wote to him and the response was that Martin died in Oregon, but again was unable to find a death certificate. Amanda was still living at home in the 1870 census but have found no trace of her since.
Amanda, Martin, and John William Lee belong to William R. (Riley) Sides and 1st wife unknown. I have always been under the assumption that William R. SIDES married after he came to Texas, but have been unable to find out where or to whom.
1860 Census has William R. in Bastrop Co., but he appears to be single at this time. However the 1870 census has him living on a farm with Tom Tyeen ( Tyreen), with three children and no wife, the oldest child age is given as 11, making her birth in 1859, possibly after the census were taken. Writing this raises another question, if the dates and ages are right did William R. marry a woman already pregnant? My, My, things get even more tangled, do they not.
Emma Dee, Lemon Dee, (twins), and Riley Sides belong to William R. and Eliza Jane (Whitmire) Sides.
After William R. died in 1888 Eliza later married John Middleton Sarratt and they had a daughter named Gracie Valentine; Gracie's daughter Lois lives in Oklahoma, if she hasn't passed on in the last couple of years.

[ Mrs. Grace Valentine (SURRATT) CROSSLAND, d. Jan 12, 1979, age 83yrs (home of Dau) Amarillo, TX. buried in Fairview Cemetery, Wellington, TX. ..prs]
I have photos of William and Eliza, John Wm., Emma and Dee; Effie and Gracie, and of Gracies family. A picture of Gracie and Emmas oldest daughter, Myrtle, made in 1895, they were babies. I have a photo of a man holding a baby on a horse that Lois and I believe might have been made at Effies house but not sure of the person or location.
I can trace William R. family back to the landing of the ship "Lydia" in1742, landing in Waldoboro, Maine, from Wurtemberg, Germany.
Where do you live, maybe we live close enough to get together to exchange info and pictures in person.
Since Emma is my husbands grandmother and she and William have the same father, that would make William his great uncle. Will be glad to share what I have. Well I guess I have made this too long as I usually do when I get started after making a new connection. So I guess I had better say goodnight, hope to hear from you soon.

Hello, my name is Lois Medart and I live in Georgetown, [Williamson Co.] Texas. [78626]
I found your entry for Martin Sides as a son of William Riley Sides and mother unknown. I am searching for a W. R. Sides who married Eliza Jane Ward 10 Sep 1856 Gonzales, [Gonzales Co.] Texas. [78629] I believe this is the mother of Martin and wife of William R. Sides. Eliza Jane WARD's brother was named Martin VanBuren Ward and Eliza was born in 1839 so the age fits as well as the marriage date and the name of their first son is Martin. I am a direct descendant of Martin Van Buren Ward. Your thoughts please.

Arabella (Annabella?) STYERS
Dated: 29 Jun 2001 12:43:43 PM Pacific Daylight Time
Source: [email protected]
Subject: [STYERS] Re: Henry Styers, Pa.-Tn.-Al.--1750's - 1830's; Arabella Styers, b. NC. 1820's?
According to a Moon family researcher, eight individuals whose names were recorded on the tax lists of Northumberland County, Pennsylvania, Penn's Township, in the years 1778-1781 afterwards moved to Jefferson County, Tennessee. Henry Styres, he says, was one of these; that in May 1797 Henry Styres was appointed overseer of the road from Moon's Schoolhouse to the Mouth of the Nolichucky (Jefferson County Minutes-- his research, not mine). I believe this may be "my" Henry, who homesteaded land in close-by Rhea County, Tn. in 1808-09, then moved on to first Madison (where he was listed in the 1815 tax records as Henry Stears and in the 1816 Mississippi Territorial Census (Alabama was part of the Ms. Territory then) in 1816, then Jackson County, Alabama, where he appeared in the census as an 80-90 year-old free white male, along with a 70-80 year-old free white female, and one 30-40 year-old free white female. The Henry Styres/Styers who died in Jackson County, Al. in 1839 (w!idow, Mary;
children: Clarkey Burton, Susanna Sutton, David, Mary Sutton, Henry, Pleasant, William P. and Martha) may have been his son.
The name eventually became "Styers" in one of our family's collateral lines in the first half of the 1800's. If anyone on this list-- especially anyone living in PA or NJ, or with access to records from those areas--will look for this Henry Styres as he's doing his own research, I'll be very appreciative.
Too, I am searching for an Arabella (Annabella?) Styers who married John Wiltz Surratt in St. Francis County in 1848 for her gg grandson, who lives in Texas.
Arabella Styers was born in N.C.; he would like to know who her parents were.
You North Carolinians who have been so quick to share: any clues? Thanks very much for your help!
I'm wondering:: the age listed in the 1830 census indicates Henry Styres was born sometime in 1750. I know there were Styres/Styers in very early New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania records--and that some of the ones in NJ moved next door to the Pennsylvania area, then on down into North Carolina. I just have not been able to make the connection (past Northumberland County) with the one I'm calling "my Henry." Family names in his line may be Sarah, John ("John Henry"), William, Caroline (?) . . . .
There was also a William "Storrs" in the Jefferson County Minutes; could he have been Henry's brother?

They had 4 daughters together (Ada, Era, Vera, Ola). He was shot and killed by his friend Clay Stewart June 20, 1892. Family lore says they had an argument over a baseball game and Clay shot him. I would love to find out more about the families of their daughters.
Amanda Mayfield Washington went on the marry my great grandfather Levi Srum SURRATT. They had one son, Robert Lee Surratt.
Amanda Washington married Samuel Shaw SURRATT who was a 1/2 brother to Levi Srum Surratt's dad, James Monroe Surratt Jr.
