The Japanese Air Force has totally destroyed our battleship the Arizona. They have severely damaged the Oklahoma, the Nevada, the California and the West Virginia, 3 destroyers, 1 target ship, 1 mine-layer which we can not put back into action. The battleship Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Maryland; Cruisers Helena, Honolulu and the Raleigh have been damaged, but are repairable. Some 2,086 Navy and Marine Officers and men have been killed, and some 749 wounded. The Army has reported some 194 Officers and men killed, and 360 wounded. First Air Fleet  Ships Lost or Damaged  Battleships!   Arizona: Exploded; total loss. 1,177 dead.   Oklahoma: Capsized, 429 dead.      Refloated Nov 1943; (capsized & lost while under tow to the mainland May 1947)   West Virginia: two bombs, seven torpedoes, sunk; returned to service July 1944. 106 dead.   California: two bombs, two torpedoes, sunk; returned to service January 1944. 100 dead.   Nevada: six bombs, one torpedo, beached; returned to service October 1942. 60 dead.   Tennessee: two bombs; returned to service February 1942. 5 dead.   Maryland: two bombs; returned to service Feb 1942. 4 dead (including floatplane pilot shot down).   Pennsylvania (Kimmel�s Flagship): in drydock with Cassin and Downes,        one bomb, debris from USS Cassin; remained in service. 9 dead.  Ex-Battleship!  (target/AA training ship) Utah: Capsized; total loss. 58 dead.  Cruisers!  Helena: One torpedo; returned to service January 1942, 20 dead.  Raleigh: One torpedo; remained in service.  Honolulu: Near miss, light damage; remained in service.  Destroyers!  Cassin: in drydock with Downes and Pennsylvania, one bomb, burned; returned to service Feb 1944.  Downes: in drydock with Cassin and Pennsylvania, caught fire from Cassin, burned; returned to service Nov 1943.  Shaw: Three bombs; returned to service June 1942.  Auxiliaries!  Oglala (minelayer): Damaged by torpedo hit on Helena, capsized;      returned to service (as engine-repair ship) Feb 1944.  Vestal (repair ship): Two bombs, blast and fire from Arizona,      beached; returned to service by Aug 1942.  Curtiss (seaplane tender): One bomb, one Japanese aircraft; returned to service Jan 1942. 19 dead. On 12 Apr. 1945 the 32nd President Franklin DeLabo ROOSEVELT of New York, died while in office at the age of 63 years. The Vice- President, Harry S. TRUMAN, from Independence, Missouri took over the nation at this burdensome times. Some four years later from the bombing of Pearl Harbor to 04 May, 1945 the German armies began surrendering; Germany signed Unconditional Surrender on 07th. May 1945 at 2:41 a.m., French time, in Rheims Headquarters. They designating cessation of operations on 09 May 1945 at 12:01 a.m., London time. Surrender also was signed in Berlin on 08 May, 1945 and was celebrated as V-E Day. On 06th. of Aug. 1945, President Harry S. TRUMAN only after being in office for some 4 months authorized the use of the first Atomic Bomb to be dropped by plane over Hiroshima, Japan (pop. 343,969). The second drop was authorized on 09 Aug. 1945 over Nagasaki, Japan (pop. 252,630). The estimates of those who died from the these bombs and radiation exposure vary, but records indicate Hiroshima was 80,000 to over 200,000; Nagasaki, 39,000 to 74,000. Japan surrendered and accepted the Allied terms unconditionally on 14 Aug. 1945, Japan formaly signed the surrender terms 01 Sep. 1945 on board the USS Missouri, Far Eastern Time, celebrated as V-J Day.
