The following individuals died in Quarantine at the Hospitals for Contagious Diseases which were located on Hoffman and Swinburne Islands in Richmond County, New York. Most of them were immigrants en route to Ellis Island who were removed from ships in the outer harbor of the port of New York by the New York State Medical Inspectors and transferred to these two hospitals. Their families would have continued on to Ellis Island for inspection and probably were detained while awaiting the disposition of the sick child or family member.
This list was compiled by reviewing all Death Certificates from November 1909 through June 1911 that were registered in Richmond County (Staten Island), NY and identifying those deaths which occurred on either Hoffman or Swinburne Islands.
Included for each entry below is the year in which the death was registered as well as the Death Certificate number. Using both pieces of information, you can then request a copy of the individual's Death Certificate by contacting the NYC Municipal Archives. For their address and schedule of fees, see their web site located at: http://nyc.gov/html/records/html/vitalrecords/home.shtml
