[NI051970] Charles H. Mowery, Jr. was a Down's Syndrome child. As an adult he had the love & gave great joy to all who knew him. This special child enjoyed all the small things that we "normal" people took for granted, & for the most part was a happy person. He is buried beside his father & grandparents, Clair & Jacquetta (Mansfield) Holsopple, in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Johnstown, Cambria Co., PA [Donna Holsopple Bumbarger, his mother]

He played saxaphone & clarinet. He was also a baritone & sang with the various orchestras in the Johnstown area. He was married quite young, at the age of 16, & was a good thorough strict father to his 6 chldrn & bequeathed all of them with a love of music & a good sense of humor. He taught his chldrn to be self-sufficient at an early age. He is buried beside his wife, Jacquetta, in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Johnstown, PA

[NI051975] Jacquetta (Mansfield) Holsopple was the daug. of Lester & Nora (Thomas) Mansfield, she was born & lived in Johnstown, Cambria Co., PA She was a great cook & a joy to have for a mother. [NI052020] Alexander THOMAS, b. abt 1741, d. 14 Feb 1802, buried Feb 1802 in Greenville Twp. Somerset Co., PA. Alexander was m. to a woman named Catherine, whose maiden name is ukwn. Catherine's tombstone bears the inscription, "Catherine, wife of Alexander 'Thomas," Alexander Thomas's activities after he arrived in PA are somewhat vague, but enough evidence exist to construct a chronology of his movemants. The earliest account is found in the obit of 1 of his grandsons, Christian Thomas, who d. in 1908. It states,: "Alexander sold his farm & received as pay a large sum of continental money, which afterwards became almost worthless, & he found himself begging. Afterward he came into possession of a piece of land not far from Johnstown, where he reared a family." The farm in eastern PA, according to family tradition, was to have been in what is now Lebanon Co., but this has not been validated. Alexander's move to "a piece of land not for from Johnstown", however, can be substantiated. A passage from "Two Centruries of the Church of the Brethren in Western PA 1751-1951" states: "We are told that Michael Thomas Sr. was b. in what is now Conemaugh Twp, on Aug 15 1774, his father, Alexander Thomas, patented 200 acres of land here, Nov 3 1789." The land patent referred to can be found in the PA Archives. It is not determined, though, just exactly where that tract of land was. Alexander owned another tract of land in what is now Greenville Twp., Somerset Co.. A map gleaned from the Co. records office clearly shows a tract of 147 acres patented to Alexander Thomas on Nov 3 1789. It is interesting to note that the patent dates for both Alexander's land holdings are the same & that the patents were taken, if the account of son Michael's birthplace is to be believed, after the family had lived on at least 1 of the tracts for 15 yrs. Alexander Thomas, according to family tradition, was a vet of the Rev. War. Enough evidence has been found to establish this through J. Montgomery Seaver, in his "Thomas Family History", listing 2 Alexander Thomas' as having served in the Rev. War. The 1st was an officer in 3 different RI regiments. The 2nd is listed simply as Alexander Thomas of NJ. Since neither of these are listed to have served with a PA Unit it is unlikely they are our ancestors. The 3rd Alexander Thomas, seems to be the correct one, as his name is listed in the PA Archives as a Sgt in Major James Grier's Co. of the 10th PA Regiment "in the service of the US for June, July & Aug, 1780." A further entry in the Archives lists a Sgt Alexander Thomas, R.A. (regular Army) to have been An "Invalid Penshioner" in receipt of his pension at the agency of Philadelphia. This entry further states his address to be unknown "in consequence of the destruction of the papers of the War Office in 1801 & 1814." but lists his date of death as Feb 14 1801. The yr of his death listed here corresponds with that handed down through family word of mouth, & is mainly for this reason we believe him to be our somewhat elusive ancestor. Much here has been written to establish that Alexander Thomas, who come from Wales, is our ancestor. Alexander & Catherine Thomas had 7 chldrn, 6 boys & 1 girl. Relocated 1772 to PhiladelphIa, PA from Wales. M. Catherine THOMAS, buried after 1789 at Conemaugh Twp., Somerset Co., on the Walter Mishler farm. The following was found at the Somerset Historical Society. Rev War vet. Wounded army. Joined navy.
