[NI066661] From Biographical & Porttrait Cyclopedia of Cambria Co., PA 1896. ABRAM HOSTETLER, a well qualified business man & a very successful farmer & fruit grower of Richland Twp., s/o Henry & Mary (Weaver) Hostetler, & b Richland Twp., Cambria Co., PA Oct 17 1866. The American ancestry of the Hostetlers is traced from early settlers in 1 section of Chester Co., to pioneers in 1 part of Somerset, & then in the 1st quarter of the present century to Richland Twp. Peter Hostetler, whose parents came from Chester Co., b & reared Somerset Co., & came 1830 Richland Twp., where he purchased a farm & passed the remainder of his life, dying Apr 1 1863, aged 52 yrs. He was the father of Henry Hostetler, whose son Abram is the subject of this sketch. Henry Hostetler b Dec 1 1841, & after receiving a common education, turned his attention to agricultural pursuits, in which he has been engaged ever since. Energetic as a business man & successful as a farmer, Mr. Hostetler has come to be one of the representative citizens of this Twp. His business & farm interests have not, however, rendered him indifferent to affairs connected with his Twp. or having a bearing on the Co. For many yrs he has served as supervisor & manager of the Johnstown & Scalp Level turnpike. a republican in political opinion, & has been for many yrs a consistent member of the German Bapt. Ch. m Mary Weaver, b Paint Twp., Somerset Co., Mar 19 1846 d/o Abraham Weaver, who was a native of Davidsville, that Co., d spring 1895, aged 77 yrs. The Weavers, like the Hostetlers, were of German descent & believers in the faith of the German Bapt. Ch., also Amish & Mennonite. Abram Hostetler received a practical English education in a common school some distance from his home, & then attended a good normal school, after which he taught 2 terms in the public schools. In youth he became familiar with the labor of the farm, & assisted in its cultivation until his majority was attained, when he engaged for himself in farming, which he has followed ever since, except the 2 yrs partly spent in teaching. Mr. Hostetler owns a well-improved farm of 80 acres of good land, situated along the Johnstown & Scalp Level turnpike, & 2 miles from Scalp Level post office. Abram Oct 30 1887 m Lizzie Statler, d/o Peter Statler, a well-known citizen of Richland Twp. Their union has been blessed with 3 chdn, 2 sons & a dau.: Clyde H., Emma J., & Newton K. Engaged in the employments of an agriculturist, while not neglecting general farming, yet made fruit culture a study, & at present has the largest peach, plum & pear orchards in his section of the Co. In politics he has always been a republican of pronounced views, & an active worker in the interests of his party. He has served as assessor & auditor, & held other Twp. offices. 1st assessor elected for 3 yrs in Richland Twp. under the State law providing for that length of term. He is deservedly popular on account of business ability, good character & efficient service as a public official. Economic, prudent & yet progressive, he is a safe & reliable business man, & in any Twp. or Co. office could be depended upon to look carefully after the true interests of the people.
