[NI073027] Nancy Kelly OBIT: d SHANK Another aged mother whose span of life exceeded 4 score yrs has been called to her reward, mourned by many of the 3rd generation. Mrs. Nancy Shank enfeebled by many yrs after an illness of 4 wks, d. at the home of her son William Shank, corner of Pearl & Union St.s, Sat. abt 4 pm. Nancy Kelly d/o Jacob & Lucy Kelly & b Mar 11 1822, New Baltimore PA & attained the ripe old age of 84 yrs, 6 mo.s, 4 dys. She was m May 18 1840, when but 18 yrs of age to Mr. Christ Shank. To this union 11 chldn were b., 7 of whom survive her. 27 yrs ago, in 1879, she came with her husb. to Crestline, which place has since been her home. Jun 19 1883 death separated her husb. from her since which time her home was made with her son William where she passed her declining yrs in peace & quiet under the tender care of her son & his wife. Mrs. Shank was very highly respected by all who knew her, was a kind neighbor an indulgent mother & Christian woman. She united with the UBC many yrs ago while a resident of her native state PA. There being now congregation of that branch of the Christian here, she still retained her membership in the New Baltimore, Pa. Breth. ch. while worshiping with other denominations here. She was the last memb. of her fathers family to respond to the final call. She is mourned for by 7 chldn, 40 gchldn; 33 ggchldn, 87 desc.s. Her living chldn are Hiram Shank, Millbrook, OH; John Shank, Wooster; Ed Shank, Indianapolis, IN; Will & Joseph Shank, Crestline; Mrs. C. Benning, Baltimore, OH; & Mrs. W. A. Miller, Wooster. The funeral serv,s were conducted from her late home, the residence of Wm. Shank, Mon. afternoon, Rev. R. A. Halverstadt, English Luth. ch. officiating. Bur. Crestline cem. The pall bearers were taken from among her gchldn. Friends & relatives from out of town who attended the obsequies were Mr. J. Benning Fairmont, WV; Hirman Shank, Millbrook; John Shank, Wooster; Ed Shank, INpolis, IN; Mrs. W. A. Miller, Wooster; Mr. & Mrs. Ed Shank & ddaug., Allegheny; Henry Krischbaum, Cleveland, OH & Emma Krischbaum, Bellville.

His death was sudden, the result of heart trouble. He leaves a wife & 4 chldn. He was the oldest s/o Mrs. Mary C. Miller, Wooster, w/o William Miller, dry goods merchant, & a gson Alexander Laughlin. The remains were on Mon brought to Wooster for interment. In the Wooster Rep dated Wed May 24 1899: BURIAL OF WILBER MILLER The remains of Wilber Miller, who d of heart disease on last Sat,
at his home in Cleveland, reached the city at noon for interment, in charge are Mrs. Miller, & Mr. & Mrs. B. M. Skeels, Cleveland. The funeral took place from the train. After the casket had been exposed to view, brief serv.s were conducted by Rev. J. F. Smith. E. C. Hard, Dr. C. H. Hesler, Fred E. Faber, Edward McCormack, C. E. Rutter & Geo. Kettler were the

[NI073106] Herald Of Truth - Vol XIV # 12, Dec 1877, pg 196, 197, 198. Nov 2, Conemaugh Twp, Somerset co, PA very suddenly Bishop Samuel Blough, aged 74y 6m 11d. Bro Blough was faithful servant of the Lord, & bishop in Menn Ch. He was b 1803, in same Co in which he d. In 1843 he was chosen to ministry, & in 1850 or 51 he was ordained bishop, which office he faithfully filled. On 28 Oct, only 5d previous to death, in good health, he preached the last time. The last 3ds he went with his wife visiting. The eve before his death he was engaged in reading late. At 4 am he arose, made the fire & returned to bed, & shortly after, before his aged wife could render any asst he was still in death. Bur the 4th, attended by many breth & sis', relatives & friends, who mourn his loss. He lived with his wife over 52ys. He leaves wife & 5 chdn. Funeral sermon by Peter A Blough & an exhortation by aged minister Jacob Blough, & Samuel Blough.

He m a Miss Shryock, of Shanksville, in Somerset Co., & they were the parents of 2 chdn: John M., & Mary, who became the wife of Christian Shetler.

JONATHAN HARSHBERGER b Jul 8 1829, Elklick twp, Somerset Co, Pa, & afterwards moved with his parents to Cambria Co & united with Amish Menn Ch in his early yrs. He m nearly 50y ago Elizabeth Yoder, & soon after their marriage they moved into Conemaugh twp, Somerset Co on farm where they lived until his death. To this union were b 2 sons & 3 daus. 1 dau preceded him. He was ordained to ministry of gospel in Amish Menn Ch in 1860. In this calling he labored faithfully whenever health would permit. He had been troubled with rheumatism for over a wk, but was not thought dangerously ill, for he had been abt most of the time & did not miss 1 meal at table until eve of his death he had a severe attack of pain in his chest & arm & suffered with shortness of breath so that he could not stay in bed. He sat in an arm chair, & when his wife wanted to assist him to put on more clothing he fell forward to floor & d instantly. Thus he d Jan 9 1902 aged 72y 9m 1d, leaving a widow, 2 sons, & 2 daus & a # of gchdn, 1 bro, whose wife d few wks ago, & a host of friends to mourn their loss. Funeral on 12th. Serv at Kaufman M H, where a large concourse of friends & neighbors assembled to pay the last tribute of respect to 1 who will be greatly missed in the Ch, the home & in the neighborhood. Servs by Bishop Michael Yoder of Mifflin Co, & Bishop Jonas Blough; bur grvyd on farm of Joseph T Yoder.

He was also preceded by 1 son Daniel, who d at age of 9 yrs. He is survived by 2 sons & 3 daus, 39 gchdn & 9 ggchdn. For some time he had some trouble with his heart, but was able to be abt. On day of his death, he went to the city, & while waiting for an auto bus, dropped over & was gone. Many yrs ago he united with Menn Ch & d in full fellowship with God's people. Funeral servs conducted in home & in Thomas Menn Ch by S G Shetler, assisted by J S Shoemaker of Freeport, IL. Bur in cem adjoining churchyard.

[NI073368] Fannie m. Jonas S. Hartzler Feb 5, 1880. Jonas was a well-respected man of the ch. & served in the Amish Menn & Menn conferences as secretary. He was involved in the beginnings of the Elkhart Institute that was the forerunner of the Goshen College. He serv as minister to several congregations including Goshen College. Quite a historian as he wrote & co-wrote several books. Jonas was the gnephew of Isaac Smucker, one of the early leaders of the Amish Menn Ch & one of the 1st settlers in Clinton Twp. Jonas & Fannie had only 1 chld, Vernon, who had started school at Purdue Univ looking forward to a promising career in mechanical engineering. After starting his 3rd yr of studies Vernon came home unable to contend with his studies because of illness. On Feb 26 1907, at the age of 26, Vernon succumbed to Tuberculosis, in which he likely contracted from a friend & fellow classmate. In the 1880's, Jonas came to northern MI & visited Mancelona & the small settlement in Arkona near Bellaire called "Troyers Schoolhouse" to preach to the Menn & Amish Menn settlers who were without a Minister. Fannie had a cancerous tumor of the womb & was operated on the same day Jonas was to leave on a fact finding trip to India for the ch abt 1925, Fannie had a stroke, which left her with a slight paralysis causing her to "drag" her left foot in the yrs following. Fannie suffered more strokes affecting her speech & mobility until she d in 1929, but not before she lay in a coma for 60 hrs. Jonas lived another 24 yrs past his beloved Fannie & m. several yrs after her death. Jonas lived until the age of 96.

[NI073830] This Jacob Brubaker possessed a copy of Martyrs' Mirror published at Ephrata, PA, in 1748. The first entry reads: 'In the yr of Christ 1749 on May 30 have I, Jacob Brubaker, united in marriage with Christian Steinman's dau. Susanna.' This was the yr after the death of his father, & Jacob was about 28 yrs old. Where Jacob & Susanna lived is not definitely known, but they probably lived near the present farm buildings on the property now owned by the Ch. of the Apostles at the edge of Rohrerstown. Jacob d. intestate in 1779.

[NI073840] The pioneer of the Nissley family in America was JACOB NISSLEY, who emigrated from Switzerland in 1719, & settled in Mt. Joy Twp., Lancaster Co., where he took up a large section of land, purchased from William Penn. The land remained in the Nissley family for about 150 yrs, when it was bought by David Wolgemuth. Jacob Nissley was naturalized in 1729.

[NI073847] In 1733 Ulrich 69, his wife & 2 sons Jacob 19 & Ulrich, Jr. 22 immigrated to the U.S. They came over on the ship 'Hope' that sailed from Rotterdam with Daniel Reid as shipmaster. A tract of land containing 229 acres, lying west of the Schuylkill River in North Coventry Twp. in Chester Co. was conveyed to Ulrich on Apr 10 1736. On May 17 1749 this land was sold to John Staner. Ulrich's son, John, had immigrated in 1727 & settled in Rapho Twp. in Lancaster Co.. In 1729 son Christian immigrated to Donegal Twp., Lancaster Co.. When Ulrich Sr. arrived in 1733 he settled near his bro., Daniel, but it seems likely that the pull of his sons in Lancaster Co. caused him to relocate to that area along with his son Ulrich, Jr. Jacob Ulrich Sr.'s youngest son stayed in the Philadelphia area, m. the widow of his 1st cousin, John, & changed his name to Longacre. // "At the Courthouse aforesaid Aug 28 1733, 84 Palatines who with their families making in all 226 persons were imported here in the Ship Hope of London, Daniel Reid, Master from Rotterdam but last from cowes as by Clearance thence were qualifed as before." I, Peter Koons of Colerain Twp Bedford Co. blacksmith being weake in body but of Sound mind & memory blessed be God for the same, do this day make & publish this my last will & testament in the manner following. 1st, that after my decease my body shall be decently interred in the Graveyard at School House; & as soon after my interment that my funeral expenses be pd & all my Just Debts out of the 1st money that may come into the hands of my executors. 2ndly, I do will & bequeath unto my beloved wife Catharine all my Real personal & mixed property for her use for & during her natural life or as long as she shall remain my widow & also that my son John shall occupy & farm the Englebright tract & likewise what land is on the Hartley tract as long as my wife Catharine shall live; & give to my wife the 1/3 of all the Projuct of said Lands & at the decease of my wife Catharine my son John Koons shall have the Englebright place or tract by paying $1400 in the following manner in $200 each yr for 7 to be then equally divided among my 7 chldn. Each child is to get $200 out of the Englebright tract & at the decease of my wife the present home place on what I called the Hartley tract being 78 acs shall be valued & appraised, that each of my heirs shall have or get share & share alike & at the decease of my wife all my goods, chattels, household furniture & whatever belonging to me at my decease shall be sold & the proceeds being equally divided that my heirs may get share & share alike & futher that my son John Koons is to have deed in title until he hath pd $1200 to his 6 bros & sis' & when he shall have full title of the said premises & futher if there is not sufficient money in the hands of my Executors to pay all my debts & in (?) my Executors shall sell of my personal property sufficient to pay all just demands & do hereby make & ordain my wife Catherine & my son John Koons executors of this my last will & testament. The only chldn we have total proof is John Peter b. Apr 2 1768 & bap. Apr 24 1768, Christ's Ref. Ch., York Co., PA. The translated record reads Parents: George Marcus & Anna Margaretha Hartman. Sponsor, Peter Wolf, Gfather. According to Christ's Ref. Ch. Records, Anna Margaretha was b. Dec 20 1746. The other chld with proof is Moritz b. Oct 20 1784, bap. Oct 27 1784, Ref. Ch. of Shepherdstown, VA/WV. The record says Parents were Moritz (Mauretz) & Margaretha Hartman. Sponsors: Johannes Mohr & wife, Elisabeth. Chldn of George & Anna : 1st is Henry b. Feb 21 1775, place ukwn, probably Berkeley Co. He m. 1st to Catherine Freshover on Feb 16 1796, Berkeley Co. he m. 2nd Eve Fultz & 3rd to Elizabeth Wise on May 26 1825, Pendleton. The next chld mentioned is James. he left when young & was never heard from. The census index has a James Hartman in 1810 living in Estill Co., KY. Moritz is listed next.b. 10-20-1784, Washingon Co, MD. m. Elizabeth Cook & Sarah Harold Hoover. John is chld #4, m. Mary Hunter in 1795.A ggdau. of John says Mary says Mary was a Fischer. Chld #5 is Daniel, m. Mary Tiller on Dec 24 1811, Pendleton. Daniel b, abt 1788. Margaret is Chld #6, b. Jan 4 1787, d. Apr 6 1883. She m. Jul 15 1807, Pendleton to Jacob Bolton. Chld #7 Elizabeth m. John George Dahmer in 1796. Elizabeth d. abt 1807. Nov 20 1810, John George Dahmer rem. to Nancy Skidmore. Chld #8 Mary m. Jacob Clayton.Mary b. abt 1781. There are supposedly 7-8 other chldn.

[NI074047] Daniel Langenecker immigrated to the Philadelphia area in 1727 and changed his name to Longacre. He brought his wife, Elizabeth, and children with him. Thomas & John Penn conveyed 230 acres of land on the southeast side of the Schuylkill River to Daniel on May 1 1733. Daniel was a Men. preacher in charge of the Manatawny District. He was also representative along with Jacob Bethel at the convention of the Quakers held at Germantown in Sep 1727. Daniel d. sometime in 1756, for on Oct 12 1756 his wife Elizabeth renounced her right to his properties & gave it to the oldest son, David

He d. intestate sometime in the first half of 1759, for on June 5, 1759 his son, Peter, petitioned the Orphans Court to value his 500 acres of real estate in Donegal Twp.. The land was valued at 780 pds.

[NI074080] It was said he knew everyone in the town of Lititz. He was a popular man both in the town & the community. He had a soft-spot for the youth & frequently made decisions that might have been somewhat "liberal" for this plain, conservative congregation, on behalf of the youth. Lineaus baptized several people in very cold weather in a pond near Lititz, later caught pneumonia & died.

One of Elton's leading citizens d. at his home at 12 pm today, after an illness of pneumonia, which developed last Fri. Mr. Paul was b. Mar 2 1872 in this vicinity & lived all his life here. He owned considerable land at one time but disposed of most of it some yrs ago & had followed the vocation of a merchant. He m. abt 12 yrs ago to Ms Idella BERKEY, d/o Mr. & Mrs. Ephraim BERKEY, who survives him, with 2 chldn, Clarence & Emmett, at home. Mr. PAUL is also survived by Mr. & Mrs. Jeremiah PAUL, 17th Ward, Johnstown & following bro.s & sis.s: Mrs. Dr. HELSEL, of Scalp Level; Mrs. Jacob E. SAUTERS, of Elton; Austin Leroy, an employee of John Thomas and Sons, Johnstown, and Merrill of Elton. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 o'clock Sunday morning in the United Evangelical Church here, with burial in the old Snavely graveyard.
