[NI076654] 2nd s/o 'Martin the Settler' was John, traditionally known as the 'Soldier Boy'. Many of his des. have membership in the D.A.R. society based on his alleged service in the Rev. War. This house was closed by a shutter on the outside, & by aid of a ladder Mrs. Hernley & the chldrn crawled up, drawing the ladder up after them. Thus they would remain through the night, listening to the wolves howling around the hut. DOWNINGTOWN was the nearest place where the family could secure flour, & they were obliged to carry it all on horseback. He lived & d. & is buried on the place which has ever since remained in the possession of the family.

[NI076796] John Kennel served in the 54th PA Volunteers during the Civil War. This regiment was made up of men mostly from Somerset & Cambria Co.s, PA He served for 4 yrs & spent most of his time guarding the Baltimore & OH Railroad in Maryland. He was present at several battlefields & was wounded (non-military action). After the war, John returned home & settled down with his wife & chldn. They lived for a time in Allegheny Twp. where John worked on the railroad. They eventually lived Boynton & in Garrett. John & Elizabeth raised 9 chldn. They are bur. in Garrett Union Cem. in Summit Twp. John m. Elizabeth Bone, d/o Martin Bone & Deliah, on 14 Oct 1859 Somerset, PA Elizabeth b. 17 Jan 1844 in Allegany Co., Maryland. d. 9 Aug 1918 Garrett, Somerset, PA

[NI076797] Elizabeth Boone, Bone, or Boon b. in Maryland, probably Allegany Co. She m. very young to John Kennel 1859 & gave b. to Emma C. Kennel Sep 1860. She is the d/o Martin & Deliah Bone of Londonderry Twp. in Bedford Co.. Elizabeth's sis., Louise Boone, m. William Kennel ( s/o Eli & Rachel Shoemaker Kennel). The Boone family lineage is rather awkward to trace as much of the Allegany Co., MD census' are not legible to read anymore. However, more than likely, Martin Bone b. in Cumberland. He was the s/o Martin Bone, also of Cumberland. Martin Sr. was the s/o Daniel Bone. Daniel Boon or Bone may have been the s/o William Boone, bro. of famous pioneer, Daniel Boone. Our family folklore states that we are descendants of Daniel Boone. William & Sarah Parks Boone lived in Boonesboro, MD & served as Brethren preachers there. They are bur. in the Brethren church Cem. in Boonesboro.

[NI076848] John & Margaret lived in Berlin for most of their lives. John d. 1934 at the age of 61. Little is known of his life, more than likely he was a day-laborer, a common occupation for men during this time. Margaret Ellen was the ggd/o James Michael Ross who came to Somerset Co. in 1784. James Michael Ross served in the Rev. War & received 266 acres of land as a result of his service to his country. There is some speculation that James Michael Ross was the gs/o the Rev. George Ross, Earl of Balbair, Royal House of Scotland. Efforts are being put forth to try & trace this descendancy. There is also speculation that James Michael Ross was a descendant of Capt. John Rolfe, VA, & his wife, Rebecca (Pocohontas) the Indian Princess. John m. Margaret Ellen Ross "Maggie", d/o Jacob J. Ross & Amanda J. Kidner, abt 1896 in Berlin Methodist Ch.. Maggie b. 22 Oct 1876 Brothers Valley, Somerset, PA d. 28 Oct 1949 in Meyersdale, Somerset, Pa bur. Meyersdale Union Cem.

[NI077116] From book "The Wilhelm & The Wilhelm Charge" His 1st pastorate was in Stoyestown Charge, PA, which lasted for 2 yrs. He came to Elk Lick as pastor of Paradise Charge on Dec 5 1858, & continued his work in this field until fall 1863. It was during the pastorate that he held preaching servs in D. Hay schoolhouse, & then in Menn Union, where the organization of a congregration was effected. It was at this time that the Wilhelms were admitted into the fellowship of the church, & foundation for future work was laid. His pastorate was suddenly interrupted, by his acceptance, in fall 1863, of a commission to Defiance, OH. He did not remain long at Defiance, as he tells us in a letter that the work proved too arduous & the climate, too malarial for him, so that he resigned his commission in spring 1867 to accept a call to Paradise Charge which head left 3 yrs & 3 mos before. It was during his 2nd pastorate that St. Paul's Ch was erected; & it was during this pastorate that attention of the Wilhelms was directed to our Institutions at Lancaster. For 6 yrs he continued his work, bldg the walls of Zion, encouraging the weak, comfirming the doubting & administering to the spiritual needs of a pioneer people. In 1873, he left Paradise Charge & for 3 yrs serv Salem Ref Ch. Catasauqua, PA. In Apr 1877, he became pastor of the ch at Hellerstown, PA, consisting of that place, Saucon & Williams Twp Chs. This was a remarkable pastorate in that it extended over a period of 40 yrs, lacking 2 mos, & that he continued to serve these people until his death at the age of nearly 82 yrs. At the time of his death he was the 5th oldest pastor of the Ref Ch in point of serv, having labored in the Ch continuously for over 60 yrs. Dr. Koplin filled many posts of honor & responsibility within the gift of the Ch. He was very highly respected as a man of great courage, high ideals & unbounded industry. He, though far advanced in yrs, was up to the time of his death work & on the floors of Classis & Synod. During his active pastorate he was honored by his Ch with election to positions of high responsibility, which duties he discharged with the same fidelity that characterized his pastoral work. Thus he was an officer of Classis & of the District & the General Synods. Franklin & Marshall College conferred upon him the degree of A. M. & Heidelberg Univ made him a D. D., in 1885. Dr. Koplin was in a full sense the father of the Phoebe Deaconess Home, Allentown, PA. He advocated the establishment of such a home long before it became an actuality. He preached, talked & wrote on the subject until the seed that he sowed bore fruit & the present handsome home is the harvest. He was the 1st Pres of the Board of Trustees & serv in that office until his death. In this capacity he was in Allentown for the last time & he addressed the 3 deaconess students who were advanced in their grades, the exercise taking the form of a commencement. Dr. Koplin was descended from Mathias Koplin, who migrated from the Palatinate to Amer in 1728 & settled in Mifflin Co. Dr. Koplin's parents were Abraham & Rachel Koplin. He was b Jul 7 1835 in Summit Co., OH, to which place his father had moved from PA. He studied in Summit Academy & Heidelberg Academy, the latter at Tiffin, OH, & from which he was graduated in 1855. He then studied theology & was ordained May 20 1856. Dr. Koplin was m to Ms Harriet a Custer, Stoyestown, Jan 9 1857, & she still survives at the ripe age of 86 yrs & is enjoying good health. There are 5 chldn, Mrs. Orma, widow of Rev. Silas F. Laury, of Saylorsburg: Emma B. widow of C. J. Gitt: Martha V., widow of Aaron Hostetter, of Hanover: Ida May, wife of W. H. Clark, of Plainfield, NJ, & Russell N. KOPLIN, Esq., of Hellertown, PA. Dr. Koplin was taken ill with pneumonia on Feb 22 1917 & d Mar 5th. Had he lived until Jul 7 he would have been 82 yrs of age. The funeral was held Mar 8, from his late residence at Hellerstown. Rev. George W. Richards, D. D., preached the sermon, taking as his text Romans 14:8.
