[NI078925] Funeral @ Harned Home @ 2Pm,Rev G.O.Ritterer

[NI078987] Jennie & Nathan moved from Cherry Tree, PA to Henrico Co., VA sometime between 1912 & 1914. They purchased a 2-ac plot of land on Rt. 5 in the Varina Dist abt 7 mis east of Richmond, VA. Nathan spent most of his time either farming or fishing on the James River, sidelines to his bootlegging operation during Prohibition. He had a houseboat where he lived most of the time, even though the boat was only abt 4 mis from his home. He sold the vegetables & the catch of the day at the Farmers Market in downtown Richmond. To my knowledge he didnt have any other trade. The family was always poor. I dont think they ever realized the depression ended. Jennie spent her time at home raising the family. They lived in a small frame house which went further into disrepair throughout the yrs as no one was there to help do repairs. It was heated by an old wood stove & was really run down. Nathan was quite a pack rat & saved everything from old newspapers to empty food cans. Jennie was abt 54 & pleasantly plump. She had coal black hair that went to her waist. It never turned gray, even in old age. Nathan was abt 62 & thin. All of the chldn attended school but only 2, Clarence & Mildred graduated. Goldie was the 2nd most educated, having finished the 10th grade. She left school & got a job so my mother could finish school. Most left school before they reached the 7th grade.
Passed away Feb 16 1966 in a local hosp. Nathan Henry Ross, age 87, of Rt. 5. He is survived by 3 daugs, Mrs. Bessie Waters, Mrs. Goldie Hornberger, & Mrs., Mildred Martin, 3 sons, James J., Clarence B. & Cecil L. Ross, 4 bros, several gchldn & ggchldn. Remains are resting in Nelsen Funeral Home where servs will be 2 pm. Bur Varina Episc Ch Cem.

[NI078988] Funeral serv for Mrs. Emma J. Ross, w/o Nathan H. Ross, will be at 2 pm tomorrow at Nelsen Funeral Home with bur in Varina Episc Ch Cem. Mrs. Ross d yesterday at her home at RFD 5. Surviving are 3 daugs, Mrs. Bessie Waters, Mrs. Goldie Hornberger & Mrs. Mildred Martin; 3 sons, James J., Clarence B. & Cecil L. Ross, all of Richmond; 2 bros, Ray Westover, Hasting, PA & Purdy E. NORMAN: Pappa Beale was a hardworking, religous man & expected every one else to be also. He laid his chores out ea day & saw that they were done. Although short, he was extremely powerful & could carry 200 lbs. of feed as well as hold a hay wagon off the floor while someone else changed a wheel. He loved to listen to sports, especially boxing, on the radio. He did not hunt or fish although all his sons did. All his farming was done by horses & he never owned an automobile. When their barn burned with loss of building, livestock & equip., & R. S. Robinson had purchased the Harned Stone House, he then farmed both properties until his death, using the Stone House equip. & barn. As Asst To Supt. for Bessemer, Norman ran the Co Store. A story often told abt Norman was how his "store bought" false teeth did not fit & bothered him. 1 afternoon during an outside family dinner at "Stone House", Norman couldn't stand it any longer. He took out his teeth, got a file from the tool shed & proceeded to file his teeth next to the dinner table. Needless to say his wife & dau.s were more than a little upset with him. This event was witnessed by a very young RJR, who still remembers it. Norman also read his Bible nightly, another habit remembered by RJR.
