[NI081280] Jacob Musser, s/o Tobias & Susannah Musser, b Stony Creek Twp, Apr 8 1821. His gfather, John Musser, was one of the pioneers of Somerset Co., having emigrated from Lancaster Co. 1784, & settled on the farm on which Jacob was b. John Musser was a mail-carrier during the rev war, & it is said that at one time he owned a part of the land on which Lancaster now stands. He was a prominent memb of Mennonite ch. He had 8 chldn: Tobias, Peter, Henry, Abraham, Annie, Susannah, Elizabeth & Polly, all of whom are dead by 1884. Jacob Musser was m Dec 20 1840, to Ms Mary, d/o Rev. Jacob Myers, Berlin Brother'svalley Twp, Somerset Co. 6 chldn were b to them: Susannah, w/o George J. Schrock (deceased), Tobias & Mary A., d in infancy; Jacob M., who m Elizabeth Beachy, Meyersdale; Catherine w/o John M. Meyers, Somerset; & Rebecca. [NI081304] They lived a no. of yrs near Berlin on a farm later owned by nephew Lewis Berkley. In the 1850s he moved to Milford Twp. where he was elected to the ministry. In 1876 he moved to Carroll Co., IL. In 1887 he moved to Sheldon, IA. While living in Philadelphia with his sons he did much preaching in the east especially in NJ. He represented the Eastern Dist. of PA on the Standing Committee. He was an expert in making maple syrup & sugar & usually spent the spring season at the home of Bro. Knepper, his nephew.

[NI081348] Craik's History of the Breth. in KS, p 280, biographical sketches: "Ephraim Cober b Berlin PA Sep 6 1825. He grew to manhood in his native state. At 21 he became a mem. of the Ch. of the Breth. m Barbara Meyers Sep 9 1849. Jun 13 1853, he was called to the ministry of the Word. "1876, with family, Bro. Cober moved, Falls City, NE. After living here a short time they moved to Brown Co. KS, later removing to Sabetha, Nemaha Co., where he resided 41 yrs. While living in the East, Bro. Cober's principal occupation was that of milling, but after coming West he worked at the carpenter's trade. "father 12 chldn, 4 of whom grew to maturity, but at the time of his death, all chldn except 1 dau. had preceded the father to the Great Beyond. lived a life of true devotion to his family, having lived with his now aged companion for 68 years, & during all these yrs he labored to maintain his family & at the same time served the ch. as a faithful minister of the Gospel. "was 1 of the pioneer preachers of KS. In his younger yrs he was quite active in the ministry. He was firm in his convictions & earnestly contended for the faith, having had a number of debates with ministers of other persuasions, in which he vindicated the truth in a way that was a credit to the cause that he had espoused & to the ch. of which he was an exponent. He was kind & gentle & beloved by all who knew him. In his preaching he was original, having a good knowledge of the Bible. Although in his declining yrs he was not so active in the ministry, still he would preach occasionally. On the Sun of the wk in which he was 90 yrs of age he went with others 6 mi.s from his home & preached a sermon that would have been a credit to 1 in the prime of life. His was a life of true service & devotion. He d at home in Sabetha, Mon June 11 1917, during the sessions of the Annual Conference at Wichita. His illness was brief. Elder R A Yoder conducted the funeral services & teh remains were laid to rest in the Sabetha cem."

He entered the academy at IA City & attended the 1st term taught at the State Normal School at Cedar Falls. He was a teacher for 14 yrs. He was principal of schools at Grundy Center & Black Hawk, IA. Later he farmed 280 acres of the old homestead. He was a Rep.. He served as a Twp. truste & Twp. committeeman. They were members of the Christian Ch.. Although they had no chldrn, they raised Robert & Frank Black.

[NI081369] the Glazebrooks came a family crest with the motto: Dum Spiro Spero, translated: "While I breathe, I hope." It is my understanding from family stories that it originally came from one of Lord Calvert's sisters who married a
Glazebrook and was given the right to the crest. The name Key(es) supposedly
comes from another relative who was the cousin/neice of Francis Scott Keyes.

[NI081458] James taught school before he moved from Somerset Co., PA, with his parents in 1866 & settled in Liscomb Twp.. When he came to IA, he worked for John Tripp binding wheat. Jim carried the chain for Tripp when he surveyed Liscomb. When the RR was built in the area, Jim, along with his Bro.s Bill & John & Bro.-in-law Jake Johnson had a contract to furnish 2000 ties. Jim owned a farm of 227 acres. He introduced red clover to the community & owned the 1st clover huller in his neighborhood. He imported a Morgan horse & 2 French Canadian stallions from Montreal & raised blooded horses. He also started the 1st herd of Holstein cattle in the north part of Marshall Co. Jim brought in the 1st Angus cattle & raised sheep, cattle & hogs. He also had a large orchard. Jim served as treas. of the grange when it was organized & served on the town council, was assessor for many yrs & was a member of the school board for 21 yrs. The Boyds gave the lots for the school grounds. Jim was a Rep. "Pete" Boyd remembers the big patch of onions he grew & his nickname of "Bailer". Elizabeth belonged to the German Bap. Ch.. She was a fine cook & wonderful housekeeper. She welcomed all the chldrn in the neighborhood to play in her kitchen.

George J. Myers, whose boyhood days were spent near Williamsport, never had the advantages of common school education. He remained with his parents until he was 12 yrs old, & during these yrs his father taught him to read & write the German language. He had a retentive memory, & being a constant reader & a close observer of human events, he has through his own efforts obtained a good practical education. When but 12 yrs old he worked on the old Portage RR as errand boy, serving this capacity 6 mo.s, & the following spring went to Johnstown, this Co., where he worked on the old PA canal Mar 1833 - June, 1837. the latter yr he went to Philadelphia & secured an appointment on the police force of that city, & although young & small, proved himself a courageous & efficient officer. Nov 1837 he retired from the police force & went to Spruce creek to work as furnaceman for John LEMON, the blower at PA furnace. He remained here for 6 yrs & then took charge of Mitchell's furnace upper Dauphin Co., PA, & 2 yrs was able to clear $10,000, which he lost during the next 2 yrs on account of the Walker Tariff law of 1846. He was now penniless & from a financial standpoint had to begin life anew. He walked to his home Blair Co. & soon secured work at the Elizabeth furnace; here he commenced to write English under Martin BELL, who was superintendent, & remained there 15 mo.s. For the next 3 yrs he was foundryman of the Ashville furnace of this Co., owned by Hugh MCNEAL, of Hollidaysburg, PA. abt. this time he built & operated 3 coke ovens the 1st this Co., using the coke produced the furnace he was operating. Mar 1851, he located on his present farm Gallitzin Twp., which at that time was a dense forest. By 25 Sep he had cleared a small tract of land & had built & moved into a small shanty. By dint of hard work & indefatigable energy, he has cleared & improved 150 ac.s, & now owns one of the most desirable farms the Co. religious faith he & his entire family are devout & consistent members of the Roman Catholic Ch. politics Mr. Myers was an old-line whig, but on the disruption of that party & the organization of the Rep. party, he became a rep., & 1856 attended the 1st Rep. Co. convention held Cambria Co.. His voice was heard from the hustings the memorable campaign of 1840, when the log cabin & the political slogan of "Tippecanoe & Tyler too," enthused the masses, & made it one of the most noted campaigns the history of political parties. He has always taken a very prominent part the politics of his Twp. as the following record will show: For 3 yrs he was Co. poor director; for 25 yrs, served as justice of the peace Gallitzin Twp.; was assessor of his Twp. for 17 yrs, road supervisor for 6 yrs, collected the school tax for his Twp. for 7 yrs; served on school board 12 yrs; as Twp. auditor for 29 consecutive yrs, & has acted as school treas. of his Twp. from 1876 to the present time. This evidences a marked degree the confidence reposed him by the people who know him best. At one period he filled 5 offices his Twp. 1847 m. Ms Mary, a d/o Joseph Urban & Elizabeth (KOONS) URBAN, of this Co. Their marriage has been blessed the birth of 8 chldrn, 3 dau.s & 5 sons: Mary E., the w/o T. Thomas STEPHENS, of Gallitzin, PA; John A, a conductor on a work train on the PA RR; D. Gallitzin, a hotel man at Ashville, this Co.; James F., now located Altoona; Joseph P., who operates the coal bank on the farm; Thomas H., who lives at home, acts as justice of the peace & auditor; Catharine, now deceased, was the w/o George L. ALLWAUGER, & d. Aug 9 1895, leaving 4 chldrn; & Clara A., b. 1852, & d. infancy. Mr, Myers knows well the less/o industry & economy, & by unyielding perseverance has become one of the most prosperous farmers of the Co. He is affable & congenial & has deservedly won the confidence & esteem of his fellow-citizens.

They were m. before coming to this country. 1817 they emigrated to America & located near Williamsport, where they rented a farm, which they continued to cultivate until 1822, when they removed by means of wagons to this Co., locating in the woods Allegheny Twp., where they had all the difficulties of a new settlement to overcome. Here by untiring energy & industry Mr. Myers succeeded clearing a farm on which he resided until 1837. He then removed to PA Furnace, on Spruce creek, on the line of Centre & Huntingdon counties, PA. He resided here for 6 yrs & again returned to Cambria Co., where he purchased a farm near Loretto. d. 1875, his wife having d. Jun 19 1854. They were both devout members of the Roman Catholic Ch. Following his retirement he kept a huge garden his backyard. One of his daily activities was walking to the local bar for a beer. He would often stop to visit at Earl's house on the way.

[NI081669] Earl attended the local elementary school until it burned down & then attended St. Frances Xavier School. Earl missed the entire 2nd grade of school due to rheumatic fever. During his hi school yrs he worked odd jobs & even drove a team for a local business. 1942 he graduated from Cresson Hi School & began to work for the RR. Earl was also making plans to marry Marie Antoinette Lynch, a local girl with whom he had gone to school. They were m. Juniata, PA, on Jan 2, 1943. They were the parents of Brenda McGuire who m. Jonathan Wallace. Life quickly became very full & challenging for Earl. Earl & Antoinette bought a house Sankertown, PA, & began working on the house & raising their 10 chldrn. While the chldrn were young time was at a premium & all the spare time was spent fixing up the house or with the chldrn. Earl taught most of them to play baseball, to garden, & to fish. He was also a great pinochle player. For many yrs Earl served on the local school board. During the summers, days off were often spent taking the family on dy long picnics. Car rides & window shopping were favorite, low or no cost activities for Sun. afternoons, the morn.s having been spent seeing that everyone went to Mass. As the chldrn grew & required less time Earl joined the local bowling league. Earl d. on Jan 26, 1976, at age 54 of a brain tumor, after an illness of a few mo.s.

Her childhood was spent moving as her mother cared for the family. Some of what she remembers is reflected the stories of Charles Paul Lynch & Rose Hertzog Lynch. During her hi school yrs, Antoinette lived an apartment with 2 of her sis.s. Her mother had rem. George Shipe & moved to Juniata. Antoinette & Doloras wanted the finish hi school Cresson. Thus the girls lived Cresson until Antoinette graduated 1942. Earl & Antoinette were to be m. the late fall. Two obstacles arose. Earl's parents would not sign for him & Antoinette's bro., Joe, was killed the service. The wedding was postponed until Jan 2, 1943. Earl & Antoinette were the parents of Brenda McGuire who m. Jonathan Wallace. Antoinette spent most of her adult life raising the 10 chldrn. She did a lot of sewing, crocheting, embroidery, & reading, particularly of mysteries. 1989 Antoinette moved to Cross Keys Village, New Oxford, PA. This is a retirement village. She is active the village happenings, although she is plagued with arthritis & osteoporosis.

A, 55th PA V.I. Jun 18 1864 he was wounded at the battle of Petersburg. the fall of 1864 he was detailed to build Hosp.s & spent 2 mo.s this way. With his reg. he faced the enemy at 1st & 2nd Petersburg, Drewry's Bluff, Cold Harbor, Deep Bottom, & several others. He was honorably discharged Aug 31 1865, at Petersburg, VA. His wife's bro. William served a PA reg. Comrade Long has been an overseer of the poor 6 yrs; he is a member of the John M. Jones Post, No 556; he is a foreman on a RR & his address is Ebensburg, PA.

Co G, 11 PA Cav. & was soon made Corp. Jul 1864, he was confined a Hosp. till Sep, suffering with fever & ague. Sep 29 1864, he was injured by a horse falling on him. Mar 1865 he was furloughed for 30 dys, & rejoined his command at expiration of time. the spring of 1865 he was detailed to guard duty 4 mo.s. He took part in the great & famous battles of Blackwater, Suffolk, North Anna River, Spring Hill, Reams Station, 5 Forks & Appomattox, C.H. He was honorably discharged Aug 13 1865 at Richmond, VA. His bro.s, John, James, David & Michael, served the late was as did his wifes bro. John. His gfather, David Skelly, served the Rev. War. The octogenerian was able to be about on New Years Eve. She was a life long resident of Cambria Co., having been b Oct 31 1848, between Gallitzin & Chest Springs. Her parents, Joseph & Mary (Watt) Koons, long deceased, were among the early settlers in this Co. Jan 25, 1868, in the original St. Aloysius Church at the Summit she was united in marriage to William J. Howell, of this place with the late, Rev. Father Thomas (a small piece of the obit is missing)time parish pastor, (missing) Howells moved to Gallitizin(missing) yrs later, Jun 5 1873, where Mr. Howell passed away on Feb 17 1905. Mr. Howell, a retired employee of the PA RR was a vet of the Civil War, having served in the 55th Reg., Co. A of PA Volunteers & saw action in the battle of Appamattox. Surviving are 4 sons as follows: Frank, Charles, Harry & Walter all of this place; 1 sis Mrs. Mary (Koons) Wise Coons, Greensburg, & 1 bro, Frank Koons, Wildwood Springs, 23 gchldn & 54 ggchldn. 5 chldn preceded her to the grave. The deceased was 1 of the oldest members of the St. Patrick's Cath. Ch., where the obsequies were conducted at 9 am Wed. A requiem high Mass was celebrated by Rev. Father George Quinn. Interment was made in St. Patrick's Cem.

Elk Lick Twp, Aug 17 1859, & d. after a long illness same Twp, at her home in the village of St. Paul, Apr 22 1930 age of 70 yrs, 8 mos, & 5 dys. d/o William & Christina Keim Kretchman, & the youngest of 5 chldrn who grew to man & womanhood. 1 bro. & 2 sis.s preceded her to the grave, Clarissa, w/o Samuel Thomas; Ellen, w/o Samuel C. Loechel, & Albert Kretchman. 1 bro. Harvey Kretchman, Davenport, Neb., survives, but owing to ill health he was unable to come to the funeral. Mrs. Sipple became a memb of the Luth. Ch. in the village where she d. when she was 13 yrs old, & remained an active member to the end of her life. She became 2nd wife of Richard Sipple in 1882, assuming the responsibility of mothering the following chldrn of her 1st husband: William Evora, Oscar, now deceased, Alice, Francis, Lloyd & George. Mr. Sipple & 2nd wife were also b. 9 chldrn, & son, Clarence, gave his life for his country in the service during the WW. Gladys, the youngest of the family d. age 18 yrs. chldrn who survive, Cordelia, w/o Morgan Walker; Florence, Elsie & Roy, at home. Mrs. Sipple was a good wife & mother, also a good neighbor, & being a person of kindly dispositon she had many friends, as was shown by the very large attendance at her funeral which was held in the St. Paul Ref. Ch. last Fri. 10:30 am, conducted by pastor, Rev. S. D. Sigler. Interment was made in the St. Paul Cem.

Surviving is his widow, former Effie Manges, & 6 chdn: Mrs. Ralph Welsh, Mr. Thomas Carson, Mrs. George Felix & Mrs. Sewell Wentz, all Alum Bank; Edward Mock, New Paris, & Richard Mock, Baltimore, MD. He also leaves 39 gchdn, 8 ggchdn & following bros & sis': Lemon & Jordan Mock, both Alum Bank, & Mrs. A. J. Reuzer & Mrs. Harry Crum, both Windber. 4 chdn & 2 sis' preceded him in death. The remains will be at Geisel Funeral Home, Alum Bank, until 1:30 pm Fri, when they will be removed to Holsinger COB, Alum Bank, for funeral servs. Rev.
