[NI085157] Johnstown Trib Jul 10 1911: David GOUGHNOUR, one of oldest resids Cambria Co. was found dead under a tree on Goughnour homestead, Woodvale Hgts, shortly before 1 pm today by a foreigner who happened to be passing along the rd near the home. It is believed he was overcome by heat. Not long after the foreigner made the discovery he reported the matter to employees of Southern Cambria RR, & they notified the deceased's sons living in Conemaugh. The remains were taken to Undertaker Oscar Davis, Conemaugh. David GOUGHNOUR who was 78 yrs of age, was b Conemaugh Twp & bro of Isaac GOUGHNOUR, & octogenarian who was found dead in bed at Goughnour homestead last Feb. David GOUGHNOUR spent all his life in this vicinity, for many yrs he was an employee of Cambria Iron Co. At one time he was a constable in the Boro of Johnstown, & later served as Burgess of Conemaugh. He was a vet of Civil war having serv 3 yrs in one of the companies that went out from Johnstown. The deceased's wife Mary (ALLISON) has been dead for some yrs. He is survived by 2 daugs, Annie, w/o Edward RORABAUGH, Conemaugh, & Minnie, m & living in Derry, together with these sons: George, Charles, Governor, Blaine & Harry GOUGHNOUR, all Conemaugh. Governour & Harry left Conemaugh Jul 1st for TX on a business trip. The times of the funeral will be announced later.

[NI085180] Trib w/Photo1907: Silas D. GOUGHNOUR: Johnstown & vicinity last eve. was deprived of its oldest & most highly respected citizens in the death of Silas GOUGHNOUR, who very suddenly but peacefully passed to his reward 7:55 pm. The end came while the aged gentleman was sitting in a large Morris chair at home & a great shock to memb.s of the family & other relatives. The aged man's death is thought to have been in a large measure by grief over sudden death of a son a few days ago as noted in Trib at that time. Silas D. GOUGHNOUR was b. Oct 27 1833 on what is now known as the Headrick farm, East Taylor Twp, when yet a boy he took up the occupation of blacksmith & (illegible portion) many yrs during (illegible portion)...RR & also spent some yrs in IA & MO. On Apr 14 1869 he m. Ms Mary Jane PARKS, d/o Mr. & Mrs. Joseph PARKS, by Rev. McClennan at Altoona. Mr. GOUGHNOUR returned to Pittsburgh in 1861 & began firing a locomotive on the PRR. The Civil War was in progress at that time & the deceased was drafted but secured a substitute, & continued his service with the RR. After working as a fireman for a little more than a yr, he was promoted to engineman & began a run on freight between Pittsburgh & Altoona. After a short time he was put on a stock run east & passsenger west between East Liberty & Altoona, under Andrew Carnegie as Division Superintendant. After that he piloted the Johnstown Accomodation, a passenger train, between Altoona & Pittsburgh, the Day Express east & the Pacific Express west, the Limited Mail, & for some time after that ran a freight locomotive on the South Fork Branch. At 69 yrs of age, he made application to be relieved of his position, & he was then pensioned, receiving a Carnegie pension also. survived by wife, whose father was the 1st engineer on this section of the PRR & for some time worked on the Old Portage, & by chldn, J.P., Mary Jane, w/o Robert WARFEL; Silas D., & R. C., Conemaugh; Mrs. Rebecca HANNA, at home; J. F., Mrs. J. A. DEEDS, & Mrs. C. M. QUARTS, Pittsburgh. 3 sis.s Mrs. Eve FURLONG & Mrs. Susan LANG, Duquesne, & Mrs. Jennie REEVES, Altoona. He was a memb. of Conemaugh Presby. Ch. & also of Cambria Lodge No. 378 (number barely legible) Free & Accepted Masons. Members of the latter org. will attend the funeral serv.s in a body. The cortege will leave the Goughnour residence at 2 pm Mon & proceed to the Conemaugh Presby. Ch. where serv.s will be held by Rev. S. Guy Snowden. An effort will be made to have Rev. Koontzman, a former friend of the deceased, assist Rev. Snowden. Rev. Koontzman was formerly pastor of Luth. Ch. in Pittsburgh & later Superintendant of the seminary at Greenville. Mr. Goughour's remains will be laid to rest at the Headrick's Cem.

[NI085189] Johnstown Trib-Dem, Jan 1917: FALL FATAL FOR MRS. HILDEBRAND W/o Elder of Breth. Ch. Passed Away This am at Memorial Hosp. FUNERAL ON THU. Mrs. MARY GOUGHNOR HILDEBRAND, w/o Elder STEPHEN HILDEBRAND, of the Breth. Ch., who fell at the home of her son-in-law & dau., MR. & Mrs. LEMON PHILLIPPI, 412 Thomas Ave., 5th Ward, early Fri. morn & fractured her hip, d. at the Memorial Hosp. about 6 am this morn, in her 85th yr. Mrs. HILDEBRAND's condition became critical last eve. The funeral will take place at 2 pm Thu. from the Phillippi home, with bur. in the family plot in Headrick's Cem.,Conemaugh. MRS. E.J.Burkhart, of Fairfield Ave., dau. of deceased, is with a sick dau. in Pittsburg. She has been summoned home & will arrive this eve. on the 9 pm train. MARY GOUGHNOUR was a d/o SAMUEL & CATHERINE SNYDER GOUGHNOUR & was b. in E. Taylor Twp, this co. Aug 10 1832. She was 1 of a family of 3 chldn, her brother, THOMAS GOUGHNOUR, having passed away at Hudson, IA., Feb 1911, & another bro., LEVI GOUGHNOUR, in this vicinity soon after the Civil War. The latter served in the 19th US Inf. during the Civil War & took sick while in service. The deceased & STEPHEN HILDEBRAND, who was b. 1828, were m. at the Goughnour home 64 yrs ago last March. The ceremony was performed by Rev. LEVI ROBERTS, of the Dunkard Church. For many yrs after their m. ELDER & MRS. HILDEBRAND made their home in E. Taylor Twp, residing in Rosedale Borough after the Johnstown Flood of 1889. With the last few yrs they have been making their home among their chldn. 11chldn have been b. to Mr. & MRS. HILDEBRAND, 3 of whom are dead; MARGARET EMMA d. in infancy; KATHARINE & SAMUEL 3 yrs later. The surviving sons & dau.s, together with Elder HILDEBRAND are Mrs. William KEIPER, Walnut Grove; Mrs. A. J. WILL, 21st Ward; Mrs. BURKHART, w/o Dr. E. J. BURKHART, Morrellville; Mrs. Lemon PHILLIPPI, of the South Side; Mrs. Edward MEREDITH, 11th Ward; George HILDEBRAND, of the South Side. In addition to these there are 33 gchldn & 3 ggchldn, the latter being William Blair BURKHART, jr., son of Mr. & Mrs. Blair BURKHART; Loleta, dau. of Mr. & Mrs. Cyril LOWDER, & Harry COLE, jr., son of Mr & Mrs. Harry COLE, all of this city. Mrs. HILDEBRAND was a lifelong member of the Breth. Ch. She held her membership with the Rosedale congregation.

From Biographical & Porttrait Cyclopedia of Cambria Co., PA 1896. Joseph Burkhart, was a life-long resident & successful farmer of Jackson Twp., in which he owned a farm containing a large vein of cannel coal, then quite valuable. This farm was bought for $13,000 by a prospective mining co. that failed, & it was taken back by Mr. Burkhart, who resided upon it until his death in 1884, at 81 yrs of age. Joseph Burkhart was a Dunkard, a republican, & a music teacher. He was twice m. His 1st wife d at 63 yrs of age, leaving a family of 5 sons & 6 daugs. By his 2nd wife, who is still living he had 1 child, a daug.

[NI085206] From Biographical & Porttrait Cyclopedia of Cambria Co., PA 1896 Philip Burkhart was b on the home-farm, received his education in the schools of his neighborhood, & then followed farming & tanning as his lines of special business. He was an active republican like his father, & like his father, would never accept an office. He was an active dunkard. He m Mollie Shoemaker, d/o Jacob Shoemaker. To their union were b 4 chldn: Samuel, a confectioner in Johnstown; D. S.; Frank, engaged in the butchering business; & James, who d in infancy.

[NI085585] Johnstown, Sat. Eve, Dec 19 1908 MANY DEATHS IN YEAR & A HALF FOR THE 7TH TIME SINCE MAY, 1907, THE GRIM REAPER VISITS GOCHNOUR FAMILY MRS. QUARTZ DIES TODAY Mrs. Ray Gochnour Quartz, w/o Charles Quartz, a passenger conductor on the Pittsburg Div. of the PRR., d. of septicema at 12:30 am this morn at Mem. Hosp., making the 7th death in the Gochnour family since May, 1907. She was 27 yrs. The remains were this morning removed to the Quartz residence, corner of Main St. & 2nd ave, Conemaugh, & it is likely the funeral will take place on Mon. afternoon. Mrs. Quartz was a member of the Conemaugh Presby. Ch. She was b. 1881, Conemaugh, /o the late Silas Gochnour & Mrs. Mary Jane Parks Gochnour. M. Chales Quartz about 7 yrs ago, & her hus., & son, Harry Quartz, aged 6 yrs, survive. Another son, Charles Quartz, aged 2 yrs, d. a short time ago. His remains were interred in Headrick's Cemetery, above Conemaugh, 3 wks ago next Mon. Mrs. Quartz's bro., Louis Gochnour, was killed on the P.R.R. at Homestead early in May, 1907, & his father, a vet. railroader, d. at Conemaugh a week or so later. Robert Warfol, bro.-in-law of Mrs. Quartz, met an untimely death a little over a yr ago at Conemaugh, where he was employed on the P.R.R. & William P. Gouchnour, Pittsburg, a cousin, was accidentally shot some time later at Ligonier, where he was out gunning. The other death was that of Irene Gochnour, dau. of Mr. & Mrs. Frank Gochnour, Pittsburg. Besides her hus. & son, she is survived by her mother, who resides in Conemaugh, & by the following bro.s & sis.s: Frank Gochnour, Pittsburg; Silas D., Conemaugh, Co. Treasurer-elect; Joseph P., Pittsburg; Ross C., Conemaugh; Mrs Mary Warfel; Mrs. Catherine R. Hanna, & Mrs. James Deeds, also of Conemuagh.

[NI085618] Johnstown Trib-Dem, Dec 19 1920. ELDER HILDEBRAND, AGED CHURCHMAN, HAS PASSED AWAY Was B. In This Vicinity 91 Yrs Ago & a Minister Since 18. FUNERAL ON SAT. ELDER STEPHEN HILDEBRAND, one of the oldest members of the Progressive Breth. Ch. in the western part of PA, d. last night at the home of his son-in-law & dau., MR. & MRS. WILLIAM KEIPER, Rogers Ave., Walnut Grove, aged 91 yrs. MR. HILDEBRAND spent a lifetime in connection with the Brethren faith & performed his duties as elder for many yrs, a stroke of paralysis more than 10 yrs ago rendering the aged man helpless. Last Wed. his condition became such as to cause alarm & his death had been expected hrly since that time. The funeral will take place Sat. afternoon, services to be held at 2 pm in the Somerset St. Breth. Ch., where the eulogy will be delivered by Rev. J. Fremont Watson. He will be assisted in the services by the REV. BENJAMIN GOUCHNOUR, of the South Side, one of the ministers of the Brethren denomination. The REV. STEPHEN HILDEBRAND, a son of GEORGE & HANNAH (LEAR) HILDEBRAND, was b. near this city Sep 3 1829 the 12th child in the family, & the last of that number to pass away. His mother succumbed to an attack of measles when he was but 7 wks old. In 1833 his father again m., this time to MS ANNA DIMOND. The Hildebrand family is one of the oldest in this immediate vicinity, Abraham HILDEBRAND, grandfather of Stephen, moving from Lancaster Co. to what is now Cambria City in 1797. George HILDEBRAND, father of Stephen, d. Dec 16 1877 at the age of 90 yrs, 2 mos, & 4 dys. STEPHEN HILDEBRAND was bapt. by Bishop Solomon Benshoff in the fall of 1855 & was elected a deacon in the Dunkard Ch. 5 yrs later. He was ordained an elder, or Bishop, in the Breth. Ch. by Elders P.J.Brown & J.B. Wampler in 1882. He began his work as a minister in the church on Mineely Hill & later preached in the Horner Ch., the Pike Ch., & the one in Rosedale. He labored in preaching the Gospel until Mar 27 1911, when he was stricken by paralysis, which disabled him for active work. MR. HILDEBRAND labored for over 16 yrs for the German Bapt. Breth. until the fall of 1881, when he was disfellowshipped with others for conscientiously rejecting the descisions of the Annual Meeting. MR. HILDEBRAND was delegate to the Ashland Convention in 1882, & also to the Dayton Convention in 1883. On Dec 23 1852, the deceased & Ms Mary GOUCHNOUR, dau. of Samuel & Catherine (SNYDER) GOUCHNOUR, of E. Taylor Twp, were united in marriage by Elder Levi Roberts, of the Dunkard Ch. For many yrs after their marriage Elder & Mrs. HILDEBRAND made their home in E. Taylor Twp, removing to Rosedale Boro after the Johnstown Flood of 1889. Within the last few yrs they have been making their home among their chldn. Mrs. HILDEBRAND d. in Jan 1917, as a result of a fall down a flight of stairs at the Lemon PHILLIPPI home in Kernville. She d. at the Memorial Hosp. Elder HILDEBRAND is survived by these sons & dau.s: George W. HILDEBRAND, 428 Robb avenue, South Side; ANNIE, w/o Lemon PHILLIPPI, 412 Thomas Ave; LEVI HILDEBRAND, 342 Decker Ave, Oakhurst; BELLE, w/o DR. E.J. BURKHART, Fairfield Ave, Morrellville; LUCY ELLEN, w/o EDWARD MEREDITH, 12th Ward; JOHN W. HILDEBRAND, E. Taylor Twp; SADIE AMANDA, w/o WILLIAM KEIPER, Walnut Grove; Y MARGARET, w/o ABRAHAM WILLS, Coopersdale. MR. HILDEBRAND is also survived by 30 gchldn & 12 ggchldn.

His grandfather, Richard Davis, was b Wales, & emigrated to this country when abt 18 yrs old. He engaged in farming in Cambria twp, Ebensburg, & followed this occup for 53 yrs. He was oldline whig, & memb Bapt ch, a deacon until his death, Apr 1866. The gfather of our subject was a good & reliable man & father of lg family, all of whom are respected & worthy citizens. All of his chdn are living, except 2, Willie & Katie. All are m & living Cambria co, except Mattie, who lives Reynoldsville, Jefferson co, PA. Timothy R. Davis, father of Howard Davis, m Lydia Burkhart, d/o Joseph Burkhart, Cambria twp, Oct 1857. He was educ in common schools, & after leaving school engaged in lumber business until 1886, when he retired from husiness with a competency sufficient to maintain him in comfort for the rest of his days. He is Protestant & rep in politics. He held office of boro constable for 6 yrs, besides having filled various other twp offices. He had 8 chdn, 4 boys & 4 girls. 1 boy is dead, rest are living, & the girls are all m. Josephine m Daniel Kerr, Indiana co, Oct 1876, & has 9 chdn, all whom are living. The family now reside in Jackson twp, Cambria co. Susan Jane m W. W. Dunmire, Jackson twp, & has 4 chdn, all living. Esther m John Gray, Conemaugh, Cambria co. 5 chdn b to this union, & all are living. Flora Bell m Daniel Custis, Conemaugh, Cambria co, & their 2 chdn are living. Of the boys, 2, Harry & Webster, are unmarried. The latter is a druggist in Conemaugh, & the former is an engineer for the PA RR. Howard Davis m Martha Jane Long, Washingtown twp, Indiana co. d/o John Long, who was educ in OH & taught school for abt 13 terms in Indiana & Westmoreland cos. After teaching he followed the pursuit of farming for a no. yrs. He d Feb 9 1883. Howard was educ in common schools, & followed lumber business partnership with his father for 5 yrs. Later, he came to Conemaugh, where he carried on butcher trade for 4 yrs, or until the great flood, which destroyed his place of business, he barely saving himself & family. After the flood he was appointed postmaster, but resigned that office after 3 mos, & embarked in furniture & undertaking business, in which he is now engaged. He is assisted in business by son Oscar, energetic youth of 15 yrs. Of his other 4 chdn, 1 is dead. He is an ardent rep & prominent political leader of his section. He was formerly constable of Jackson twp, & in Feb 1894, was honored with office of mayor of Conemaugh boro. Sarah Brenneman is closely tied with the Peter Goughenour family as early as 1850 census, when she is shown liv. in his household. A male Brenneman is shown liv. in the household of one of Peter's sons in the same census. No explanation of relationship/why they are there. Sarah remains in the household in subsequent census records, liv. with the older chldn of Peter after Peter's death in 1855, until m. Michael Felix sometime after 1885. There were no chldn b. to the union of Michael & Sarah. Sarah Brenneman is also a beneficiary after Peter's death for caring for his dau. Ann Catherine.

[NI085733] Daniel Webster BRALLIER, now a res. Jackson Twp., & well known for energy, thoroughgoingness & success, is s/o Rev. Samuel & Susannah (Good) Brallier, b. Apr 26 1851, Belsano, Blacklick Twp., Cambria Co., PA. The Bralliers are of French-German descent, & many of them in the new world have inherited the good qualities of both races. In this State the Bralliers were 1st resident in the eastern part, where Emanuel Brallier, the grandfather of the subject of this sketch, was b. & reared. He was a shoemaker by trade & a farmer by occup., & came to Belsano, this Co., where he d. Dec 1882, age 88 yrs. He was a memb. of German Bapt. Ch. & his son, Rev. Samuel Brallier, was a native of Morrison's Cove, Bedford Co. He came when a young man to Blacklick Twp., but afterwards removed to Jackson Twp., where he passed the last 25 yrs of his life, b. Sep 2 1824 followed farming & lumbering for a livelihood, d. Oct 11894 just past the 70th yr of age. He became a memb. of German Bapt. Ch. at an early age, & served acceptably & with profit in its ministry for many yrs. He was a man of enterprise, & highly respected by all who knew him. His wife, Susannah (Good) Brallier, b. East Taylor Twp., Mar 29 1833 d. Nov 19 1887. She was a memb.of German Bapt. Ch., & her father, Jacob Good, was s/o Christian Good, a large land-owner & substantial citizen of East Taylor Twp. The Goods were of German descent, & Jacob Good m. Elizabeth Goucher, whose father, Christian Goucher, was a German Bapt. & an excellent citizen. Daniel Webster Brallier was reared in his native Twp. until he was 17 yrs of age, & then removed into Jackson Twp., which has been his residence ever since. He received his education in the public schools, & learned the trade of carpenter, at which he worked steadily at various places until 1873. In that year he commenced his present prosperous business of contracting & building. He is an excellent & skilled workman, & a man of energy & push, & has built a large no. of houses, including the erection of some fine & tasteful residences. In connection with his numerous contracting & building operations, he takes time to manage the fine, productive farm which he owns in Jackson Twp. Skilled as a workman, successful as a farmer & energetic as a business man, Mr. Brallier is recognized as an intelligent & useful factor in the progress of the community in which he resides. A strong Bapt. in his religious faith, memb. of 1st Bapt. Ch. of Johnstown. He is a democrat in political opinion, & while interested, yet is not active to leadership in the field of politics. He has filled most of the Twp. offices, & has been elected consecutively for 9 yrs as auditor of Jackson Twp. On Oct 28 1873 he m. Mollie A. [NI086006] Obit Johnstown Paper Aug 18 1940: SIMONE E. RORABAUGH, 68, of 223 Second St., Conemaugh, a retired PA RR locomotive engineer, d. at 12:15 am yesterday in Memorial Hosp., where he was admitted hrs earlier. Mr. Rorabaugh was rushed to the hosp. & admitted at 10:15 p. m. Sat. His condition was critical when he was admitted to the institution. A native an lifelong resident of Conemaugh, Rorabaugh was b. Octo 10 1871, s/o Henry & Margaret (Dunmire) Rorabaugh. He entered the employ of the PA RR Co. as a young man & retired from active service about 4 yrs ago. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Annie M. (Goughnour) Rorabaugh, & 2 dau.s, Mrs. Mabel (Widow of Roy)Varner & Margaret, wife of Stewart Horner of 217 2nd St., Conemaugh. He also leaves 5 gchldn & a bro. Israel Rorabaugh of Cambria Twp. He was preceded in death by a son, Paul Rorabugh. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:30 pm Wed. in Calvary Ev. Ch., Conemaugh, Rev. J. Edgar Walters, pastor will officiate, asssisted by Rev. William H. Shaffer. Interment in Headrick's Cem. above Conemaugh will be directed by the John Henderson Co.

[NI086011] Lived in East Conemaugh & Dale Boro most of her life. In Dale she lived in one half of a duplex on McMillen Street shared by her sis. Margaret (Rorabaugh) Horner. She worked hard following the premature death of her usband. She 1st worked as a baker & cook & later became a charwoman for United States Steel where she remained until she retired.

[NI086029] Cambria Trib article of 22 Jan 1883 states that this family froze to death in Dakota Territory on 11 Jan 1883. "The deceased are Mr. Hite, his wife & 2 chldn. He was the bro. of James C. Hite of 180 Somerset Street. He came here from Blair Co. & m. abt 5 or 6 yrs ago, a d/o Adam Goughnour of Taylor Twp." The article does not give the names or the sexes of the 5 chldn.
