Lizzie (as she was called) left PA in her early 20s to live with bro.s & sis.s in Waterloo, IA. Conditions there were not good for her. A boyhood friend, Jacob Light Phillippi, asked her to come to KS where he had moved with his parents. Jake & Lizzie were m. 1891. After several yrs as farmers, he became a Free Meth. preacher & they lived many places throughout KS in the yrs that followed. While he was spending time traveling as a dist. elder, she was the matron (cook) 1st at Orleans Seminary, Orleans, NE, & then when the school moved to McPherson, KS & became Central Acad. & College. They moved to their home in Ottawa, KS after a stroke he had in 1936. He d. 1938, & she lived there until her death Oct 25 1952. Everyone loved Lizzie. Letter written to son a few mo.s
before she suffered her fatal stroke. It was not unusual for her to "ramble", but this is worse. "My mother had 2 bro.s, Levi & Aaron Kimmel. Dr. Maust's mother
& my mother were sis.s. Mother had 2 sis.s that m. Mausts. Eliza Maust (Dr. Maust's mother was Maggie) mother then Mrs. Joe Maust & Kate (Alfather) were her sis.s. Mother's father's name was George & my father was John M. Kimmel. He was known for his honesty & uprightness. Mother's sis. that I misspelled was Alfather. He was as odd as his name. Her name was Kate." In a letter dated 2 days later she writes: (speaking of her half-bro.) "Harvey was 2 1/2 yrs old when his mother d. I did not know I had half bro.s or sis.s till I was away from home. I only know that when any of my half bro.s or sis.s needed help Mother would send me as I was the oldest. They were all very nice & who could do anything less." (I have always wondered where did "they" live. Who took care of them?) She goes on: "My mother's father d. when I was a baby. They were no relation, that is my parents. Mother's father, George, came from Germany--her mother's name was Polly. Mother had 2 bro.s, Aaron & Levi. Aaron was a big fat man & Levi was tall & slender."

[NI095908] Cora Edith, eldest chld of John & Emma Speicher, b 1 mi west New Buena Vista, Nov 23 1877, d Johnstown Tue morn, May 30 1899, of quinsy, 21 y, 6 m & 7 ds. received her education in a little school house on the east side of the Allegheny mountain 3 mis west of New Baltimore, Somerset Co. & afterwards in the Berlin & Meyersdale Normals. She taught several terms successfully. Her influence for good was not only noticeable in the school room, but also in the home & in the Ch.. During the winter of 1897 & 1898 she did not only have her school work, but also had to care for her sick mother & the management of the household duties of a lge family. It is with heartfelt sorrow that we chronicle her early & sudden departure. Entirely ignorant of both her sickness & death, the anouncement thereof came like a flash of lightning from a clear sky. Her illness was of short duration & all that medical skill & kind friends could do proved of no avail. We must bow to the will of Him who doeth all things well & say Thy will be done. She has gone to be with the redeemed of all ages. Bap. in infancy by Rev. H. S. Garner & united with the Reformed Ch., New Buena Vista, Oct 12 1895, & was true to her Ch. vows. Her amiable disposition won for her a host of friends wherever she became acquainted. She was an earnest & loyal Christian, a loving & forgiving sis., a kind & dutiful dau & a warm & faithful friend. Her remains were carried to their last resting place by 6 of her former pupils, Samuel, John, Charles, Orlando & Edward Felton & Joseph Benning. The funeral took place Thu in the old White Ch. on the hill at Schellsburg & was conducted by her pastor Rev. D. G. Hetrick who based his discourse on the words "Be ye also ready for in such an hour as ye think not the s/o Man cometh." She leaves to mourn her early demise her father & mother, 5 bro.s, 3 sis.s & a host of friends. The bereft family have the heartfelt sympathy of the whole community. GIDEON

[NI096162] Among the interesting & instructive events that have come through the pages of THE GLADES STAR over the yrs, no mention has been made of the terrible tragedy when a little boy was lost in the woods. On a farm, perhaps a mile from Swanton lived an industrious & worthwhile family consisting of Daniel Mosser, his wife Ann Barnthouse Mosser & their 3 sons & 3 dau.s. The eldest was a teenage girl & the youngest a boy, age 4, bore the names of GROVER CLEVELAND MOSSER. On Sun. morn, 24 Oct 1890, the 5 older chldn walked to Swanton to attend Sun. School at the Protestant Episc. Ch. "Claty", as the young Grover Cleveland was affectionately called, remained with his mother. He would have liked to have gone with his older bro.s & sis However, he was appeased by being dressed in a new hat, shoes & Sun. suit. His mother told him she had work upstairs. She gave him a slice of bread & butter & whatever spread he liked, then left him sitting on a door step apparently happy with a partly brown cat, his special pet. When the mother came downstairs there was no boy or cat in sight. Naturally, she called & searched for him around the house. The alarm spread rapidly. Men & boys searched for hrs & when night came they used matches & lanterns. The search continued for many days & nights as many felt the lad might still be alive. After a no. of days the cat returned. The poor mother never gave up her search. She walked until she could hardly cross a floor because of swollen feet. As soon as they improved, she was out again. Six mo.s from the day he wandered off, little Grover Cleveland Mosser was found dead in what is known as Green Glade, 3 mi.s from Swanton. It was a damp spot as that found in the Glades & the remains were readily identified. The family was much com_____after this. However, because of such an ordeal, the mothers health was so impaired that she contracted an illness she could not physically resist. She d. in abt 2 yrs. In her last hrs in delirium she repeatedly said "Claty is calling for me to come" & come she did, finding her lost boy. Per: Glade Star--Garrett Co. Historical Society Newsletter--reprinted by Mrs. Wm J. Kuykendall.

In the 1860 census, the son, John is listed as 7, Samuel as 4 & Elizabeth as l. Jonathan Weible (or Weivel, as his name was printed in the census) was listed as 27 & a farmer, & Nancy, his wife, was 25 yrs old. His d. date was on the record of from Somerset Co., PA, & the b. date was derived from the age listed on the d. certificate. Jonathan Weible was a vet. of Civil War. He enlisted & was in Co. K, 206 PA Inf. He enlisted 3 Sep 1864, Johnstown, PA for a period of 1 yr & is listed as being 31 yrs old with blue eyes, brown hair, dark complexion & hgt 5' 11 1/2". (His dark complexion might be attributed to the fact that he was a farmer, & since he enlisted in Sep, his skin would have been quite tan from being outdoors all summer.) He was given a bounty of $100 for enlisting. He signed his enlistment papers himself with a firm hand, so we know he was able to read & write. He was honorably discharged Jun 1865 at the close of the war, & he did not participate in any battles during the war.
