[NI101234] Russell & Evelyn lived with Julia Warfied Creager on "Self Defense Farm" (on Renner Rd. near New Midway, MD) until Julia retired from farming cir. 1942. They moved to a house further down Renner Rd., by the stream. Russell worked in Taneytown at the Southern States Cooperative from 194_ until 195_. When Julia d. in 1947, the farm was "sold" & some how Russell ended up with it. They moved back there that yr. Julia owned an old Model T Ford, but never had enough money for gas. When it was gone, they bought a 1934 Buick & pd $25 for it. Following that, they purchased a 1930-1 Model A Ford for $250. They ran it until the floorboards were gone & later sold it for $15. Next they bought a 1950 Ford & kept for the remainder of their marriage.

[NI101353] Gottlieb Rayman b Germany 1747, d Somerset Co., PA, 1804. He was a pioneer settler of this Co., & came here from Berks Co. in 1773. By trade he was a tailor. Like many of the early settlers, he lived mainly by hunting, & wore garments made of deerskin. His chldn were: John, George, Charles, Mary (Sweitzer) & Elizabeth (Shank). John went to Canada. George & Charles lived on the homestead. George was the father of 11 chldn. Many of his gchldn reside in Somerset Co. in 1884. [NI101363] Christian Brant, progenitor of Brant family, removed from Dauphin Co to Stony Creek Twp prior to 1795. He settled near site of Shanksville, on Lazear farm. Mr. Brant & several of his neighbors were accustomed to go to Mercersburg to trade the skins of deer, bears & beavers for salt, flour & other provisions. On one of these trips he was taken ill & died suddenly. His children were: Christian, Abram, Samuel, Adam, George, Elizabeth (wife of Caspar Keller) & Eve (wife of Jacob Keller). All are dead. George Baltzer b Steinbaugh, Gemany 1808 & came from the kingdom of Hesse to this country 1821. He settled at Berlin, Somerset Co. where he followed the tailor's trade. In 1833 he moved to Stony Creek, where d 1878. He m Mary Rayman. chldn: Charles L., Edward, John, Simon, Sylvester, Catharine (Wilson), Elizabeh (Baldwin), Louisa (Stutzman) & Aquilla (Walker). John & Edward serv in late war. The former was in Co H 187th reg PA Vols, & was killed at Petersburg Jun 1864. Charles L. Baltzer has been in the mercantile business in Shanksville since 1862.
