[NI118050] Earliest kwn progenitor of Gary/Geary family in Amer was Peter Gary, a Rev War soldier who enlisted in Northhampton Co, PA. He may have been from a German settlement in NJ. His bro Killian m in Zion Luth Ch, Hunterdon Co., NJ in what was then New Germantown & is now Oldwick. Peter appears to have read German & may have spoken it. He had two German Bibles in his possession & belonged to the German Ref Ch, Somerset Co., PA where he lived after abt 1785. Peter serv as fifer with the rank of sgt in 4th Reg't of Artil, PA Line. Peter, serv from Mar 1782 to Jun 1783, was not assigned to a co, but to the reg'tl hqs, as a memb of reg'tl band, rather than to a co. This regiment did not always fight as one unit. The reg't during Peter's serv was credited with serv in 2 southern campaigns that resulted in the battles of Savannah & Charleston. Peter & his bro Killian moved to what is now Somerset Co in 1785 (the co was formed from Bedford Co in 1795). Peter purchased 144 acs selling there for 25 cents an ac. Subsequently, in 1807, Peter Gary learned of the Act of Congress which provided free land to rev War vets upon application. On Nov 25 1808, Pres Thomas Jefferson, & a future pres, James Madison as Sec of State, personally signed a grant of 100 acs to Peter Gary for his wartime serv [Military Bounty Land Warrant 361, Act of 1806, Vol 211, pg 258, Order 201971, U.S. Dept of Interior, Bureau of Land Management.] The land was located in Coshocton Co, OH [Lot 22, Sect 2, Twp 6 No., Range 6 W.] As was a widely accepted practice, it appears Peter Gary sold the grant almost as soon as he received it. Peter m Catherine Kester, also of German descent. There are several anglicized versions of the name Kester, including Custer. The couple was m 29 Jul 1790. They had 10 chldn.
