[NI123525] There is conflict the parentage of this John King. He could have been the s/o John of Philip King Sr. John King, Tanner, was assessed for a tannery 1798 located near Kingwood, near the boundary of Turkeyfoot & Milford Twp.s. [NI123977] Samatha Jane Colburn Nicklow, d/o George W. Colburn & Harriet Wersing was b Jul 22 1846 in Turkeyfoot Twp, Somerset Co., PA. She was the niece of Andrew Jackson Colburn, a prominent Atty-at-Law & citizen of Somerset Co. Samantha's ggfather, Robert Colburn, one of the pioneer settlers of the Jersey Settlement, Somerset Co. had moved from NJ to PA in the year 1770. He serv as a pvt in Capt Joseph Luse's Western Batt., Monroe Co, NJ. Robert Colburn's farm is located near Draketown in Lower Turkeyfoot Twp. At 16, Samantha Jane Colburn m Daniel Nicklow & they had 3 chldn; Mary Perod (Molly) Null, Leila Gertrude and Orville David. Daniel was a farmer with many farms throughout the Petersburg area. They resided in Petersburg after their marriage. Samantha Jane, a very bright, energetic & very ambitious lady, started a Millinery Shop in a building adjoining her home. She imported fancy articles & trimmings for her hats from many large cities. Each mo, when her business was flourishing, she had 2 trimmers travel from Pittsburg to do special orders & to trim hats for the many ladies who came from all over Western PA. She also employed 2 seamstresses to keep up with the orders. Her millinery business was very successful. During the summers, Samantha Jane often traveled to Salisbury, MD for a vacation. Her descendents often wondered how she made the trip; by train or by canal? Abt this time, (my father, George Nicklow said,) a salesman of hats talked Samantha Jane into changing the spelling of her last name to "Nicola". This she continued until her dying day although her husb Daniel Nicklow never changed the spelling of his last name, continuing to use the same spelling he used when he was in the Civil War. We say that Samantha Jane was a forerunner of the "Women's Lib Movement" & one of the 1st, if not the 1st female entrepreneur in Petersburg. In later yrs, she became deaf & in order to aid her hearing, she used a horn. She pretty well ran Daniel & was always telling him to do something. He, in turn, would fuss at her knowing full well that she could not hear a word he said! Daniel Nicklow & Samantha Jane Nicola are bur in Addison Cem.

John was a member of the Legislature and was elected as a Justice of the Peace in 1825 for the Addison and Turkeyfoot Townships. He Officiated at many local wedding ceremonies for the entire region. John was married to Sarah McNeil and in 1825 built a large brick home on the Southeast side of the Casselman River beside the road. This building is still standing and is in excellent condition.
