[NI132146] History of Alleghany Co., MD. pg 642: DR. D. P. WELFLEY was a skillful as well as a scholarly physician, a modest man & a great student. Though rather reserved, he was a delightful conversationalist when drawn out by some favored subject. He was b Salisbury, Somerset Co., PA, Feb 27 1832. His parental ancestors were natives of Germany. Peter Welfley, his father, was b Frederick, MD, in 1787, and later became one of the founders of Salisbury. Dr. Welfley's father being a teacher by profession, instilled into his own son his rudimentary education. Dr. Welfley, himself, spent some time in teaching while he, at the same time was prosecuting higher studies. In 1855 he entered classical & scientific course in PA College at Gettysburg. In 1855 he commenced the study of medicine in the office of Dr. H. C. Stewart & received the degree of Dr of Medicine from Univ of PA, & at once entered upon the practice of his profession with great earnestness at Accident, then in Allegany Co., MD. After 4 yrs he established himself at Salisbury, PA, & subsequently at Grantsville, MD. In 1873 Dr. Welfley came to Cumberland, where he soon acquired a large & lucrative practice. Dr. Welfley ranked high in his profession as a learned, careful & progressive physician. He had an extensive library, & was a constant reader on subjects pertaining to his profession & scientific subjects of allied nature. He devoted considerable time & consideration to public & domestic hygiene & sanitary science, especially to that branch of it pertaining to microscopic exam & chemical analysis of drinking water of the city of Cumberland. Upon his profession he reflected honor, character, & confidence. He was for virtue, sobriety & seriousness. He made numerous contributions to medical literature, & was engaged in the production of a work at the time of his death. He wrote a valuable series of articles on "Origin & Formation of Limestone." Dr. Welfley m the 2nd daug, Mar., of Hon. Richard Fairall, which union was blessed with 3 chdn, 1 son, Richard, who also became a physician, now deceased, & 2 daugs, only 1 of whom is now living, Mrs. Rena Taylor, Washington, D.C. In religion Dr. Welfley was thoroughly orthodox & had full faith in God & his transmitted word. He was a memb Luth denom. He took but little interest in politics. He was an enthusiastic & bright Mason, & filled the highest offices in each of its divisions in Cumberland, viz, Blue Lodge, Chptr, & Commandery. Dr. Welfley d in Cumberland of typhoid fever in 1886. He was a physician who practiced his profession for the good he might do, & not for its emoluments.

[NI132180] HON. J. C. STINEMAN - Obit/Bio from ch publication, Apr 23 1913 Hon. J. C. STINMAN was b Apr 9 1841, d Apr 2 1913, aged 71 y 11 m 21 d. He was a s/o Jacob & Mary CROYLE STINEMAN, Adams Twp, Cambria Co, PA. Of sturdy German stock, he inherited a strong robust body & his parents possessing the qualities of high & noble characters, the son received from them the fundamentals essential to a strong character. As a farmer's boy he worked diligently, & at the same time pursued his studies with such application that at the age of 18 he became a teacher in the public schools. In 1863, when Gen. Lee invaded PA, he enlisted the state militia serving 2 mos. In 1864, he enlisted in Co. F. 198th Reg PA Vols & serv to the end of the war, being present when Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse. Upon his return home, he resumed work as a common laborer. Preferring mining, starting as a driver & moving up gradually until he became one of the great coal operators & owners of the state. Dec 20 1886, he m Ella VARNER, this union being blessed with 5 sons & 3 daugs. His rapid rise to eminence , & unselfish love for his fellow-men soon created a demand for his servs in public life. He was twice elected a memb of Lower House in the State Legislature, & 4 times to the State Senate, the last time in 1912, with a majority never equalled in his dist. The secret of Bro. STINEMAN's great career lay in his beautiful & powerful Christian character. He early consecrated his heart & life to God, & in 1871, under the pastorate of Rev. J. A. Grimm, he, with a no. of others, organized what is now our South Fork Un Evang congregation. The congregation always had implicit confidence in his piety & ablility to & gave him it's highest honors. He was one of the trustees from the 1st & up to the time of his death, a class leader for yrs & also a Sun School teacher at the time he was called home. His youngest son, Wilbur, has assumed the duties as teacher of the class vacated by his death. The charity of Bro. STINEMAN is well known, & was not applied to his local congregation only, or his ch, but it reached out to many institutions, pvt & public. He was also a trustee of Albright College, which he liberally supported. The home of our bro was exemplary, & he never quite recovered from the shock, when nearly 2 yrs ago, his devoted companion was so suddenly taken from him. They are now happy once more. 5 sons & 1 daug are left in saddness, but if they follow the Godly example of father & mother, will meet them again where there are no separations. The funeral servs at South Fork Ch were attended by many senators, representatives, judges, & others over the Co. & state. Some 1,500 or more could not fit into the ch. Rev. A. C. James, Chaplin of the Senate read scriptures. Rev. J. W. Domer offered prayer. The writer preached a short sermon for 2 Tim (several illegible words) Rev. (illegible) Corry followed with a few appropriate remarks. Rev. (illegible) Ware pronounced the benidiction. Rev. A. C. Miller (illegible) Yoder, David Berkey, & A. E. Husted, the latter of the E. Ch were also present. The body of a devoted father, a faithful Christian, a prominent citizen, & eminent statesman, was then borne to its last resting place in South Fork Cem, awaiting the final resurrection. But, the influence of his beautiful & useful life continues. May the dear Lord comfort those who mourn & bring them all unto a happy reunion in our Father's House above. F. E. Hetrick Johnstown Trib Apr 2 1913 Cambria's Rep in State Senate Had Busy and Successful Career. South Fork, Apr 2 State Senator Jacob C. Stineman d 9:12 am today at his home here. Heart failure, due to a severe attack of erysipelas, which affected his head & spread over a portion of his body, was the direct cause of death. His illness dated from last Wed, when he returned to South Fork from Harrisburg. Had he lived until next Wed, the deceased would have been 71 yrs of age. Funeral Servs 2 pm Sat at Sourth Fork Un Evang Ch, Rev. Franklin E. Hetrick in charge. Bur South Fork Cem with the body to be bur beside that of his wife. [NI132881] Henry C. Cramer was a well kwn blacksmith, farmer, & veterinarian in Kingwood. Abt 1913, after buying a 40 ac farm adjoining that of William H. Trimpey, a feud broke out between Henry & Trimpey, culminating Jun 11 1914 in the shooting death of Trimpey by Henry. The root cause of the feud is that the Cramer farm had no rd outlet except by a lane on Trimpey's property. In the past, owners of the Cramer farm had been allowed to use the lane. However, Trimpey denied its use by Cramer, & according to Henry he would never be allowed to use it. No explanation for the enmity was ever given. This lead to a court petition for a rd by Henry, who then laid out a new rd which crossed the Trimpey rd. Then followed several mos of fence bldg & fence breaking between the 2 men, leading to the shooting. Trimpey did not die immediately & named the shooter. Henry was convicted of voluntary manslaughter & sentenced to a term of 5 to 8 yrs in prison & fined $100 & costs, amounting to probably $1500. Henry d 4 yrs later & was bur at Rockwood IOOF cem. Probably both men were too stubborn for their own good. 8 chdn were left fatherless, & 2 wives with no husb. Details of the dispute, shooting & trial were published in Somerset Herald between Jun & Oct 1914. He m Amanda BLUBAUGH 20 Feb 1881. She was b 26 Aug 1864, Kingwood, Somerset Co,PA. Amanda d 1954, at the age of 89.
