[NI140527] Obit in the J-town Trib - Dec 4 1905: RAY D. SPANGLER Ray D. Spangler, whose serious illness was referred to in the Trib a few days ago, passed away yesterday forenoon at the home of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. George F. Spangler, No. 559 Coleman ave. He was in his 20th yr, having been b near Shanksville, Somerset Co., & brought to J-town with his parents some yrs ago. 5 bros & sis's survive, besides his parents. The body will be taken tomorrow afternoon over the S. & C. Branch to Shanksville where the funeral will be held Wed 10 am. Mr. Spangler had been ill for the past few mos, at 1st with a complication of diseases, which later developed into paralysis of the entire lower half of the body. The death of young Mr. Spangler is peculiarly sad in that his fatal illness attacked him at almost what was to have been his wedding time. He & Miss Nettie, daug of Mr. & Mrs. Levi J. Ripple, of Franklin st, were to have been m in the early autumn, but the groom's illness prevented. Lately, when he felt somewhat stronger, a marriage license was procured, & the young couple were awaiting a favorable return in his case to have the ceremony performed, when he suddenly became much worse & death soon followed.

[NI140622] NEWSPAPER ARTICLE: FATAL RESULT, John Shaffer, Hurt While Bathing, Dies in City Hospital: Under Treatment For Many Weeks: After being confined to the Johnstown City Hospital for 13 weeks, suffering of a pressure on the spinal cord, the result of an injury at the base of the brain which he sustained when he struck a rock while bathing in the Paint Creek last summer, John Shaffer of Moxham died last evening. The best of attention was afforded the young man, many of the city's best known practitioners being called in consultation in the case, but all their efforts were unavailing. Took His Last Plunge. It was on a warm afternoon that young Shaffer, who was 19 years of age, went out in the Paint Creek valley with a number of his associates and took a swim in the cooling waters. He dived for what was intended to be his last time and it was. When he did not respond to the calls of his companions they discovered that something was wrong and went to his rescue. It was then found that the youth had been badly hurt when his head struck a rock. After some delay the young man was brought to Johnstown and taken to the City Hospital, where he had been under treatment since that time. The injury had caused a pressure on the spincal cord that surgical science could not remove, although for a time his condition seemed to improve.
OBIT: The Daily Trib, Johnstown, Cambria Co., Pa: Wed Eve, Nov 12 1913: YOUNG MAN DIES A CREEPING DEATH: John E. Shaffer, Hurt in Paint Creek, Succumbs to Gen Paralysis: John Elmer Shaffer, the popular young Moxham man who passed away at the Johnstown City Hosp at 5:30 pm yesterday, was the victim of an accident the effects of which were watched by practically all of the physicians of Johnstown, as well as specialists from other cities. Including Dr. L. E. Russell, the famous Cincinnati surgeon, & Dr. Max Schapiro, the NY bloodless surgeon. Death resulted from a fracture of one of the spinal vertebrae, & came literally by inches, paralysis that set in immediately after the injury extending until the life spark fled. Although his parents & other relatives & friends knew that he could not recover, his death was nevertheless, to a certain extent, unexpected, & came as a shock to them. They had been told that while an operation under ordinary conditions might prove of some avail, in the patient’s weakened condition it would undoubtedly result fatally. The accident which cost the Moxham youth his life, occurred Aug 10. While bathing in Paint Creek, not far from the Busy Bees’ Country Club, Shaffer attempted to dive. His head struck a rock. The force was sufficiently severe to result in the fracture of one of the small bones that make up the spinal column, & which protect the nerve cords. Paralysis of a large part of the body, including the right side, set in. While he could move his hands, he could not open or close them. His mind was clear almost up to the moment of his death. John Elmer Shaffer was one of the twin sons of Mr. & Mrs. John T. Shaffer, 543 Linden Ave, Moxham. He was aged 18 yrs, 9 mos, & 27 dys. At the time of the accident, which cost his life. He was employed as a dispatcher by the Valley Smokeless Coal Co. In addition to his parents, he is survived by the following bros & sis': Mary w/o J. O. Strandquest, Earnest, Indiana Co.; Fred, William, Merle, Miles, Paul, Alma, Clifford, & Joseph Shaffer, at home. Miles Shaffer is twin bro. Funeral serv for John Elmer Shaffer will likely be Fri afternoon. The obsequies at the home, at 2 pm, will be in charge of Rev. Oscar B. Emerson, pastor, Grove Ave MEC, of which the deceased was a memb. Bur Grandview Cem.

[NI141185] ROBERT BARCLAY, burgess of Roxbury, this co, was b in Somerset co, June 27, 1834, & s/o Thomas & Eliza (Daugherty) Barclay. His paternal gfather was a native of Scotland, while his maternal gfather was of Irish origin, & serv as a soldier in patriot army in their struggle for liberty in the war of the Revolution, & was the 1st man bur at Stoyestown, Somerset co, with military honors. Thomas Barclay, father, was b in 1805, in Westmoreland co, educated in the dist schools, spent his early life in Westmoreland co, & when a young man, went to Somerset co. In 1846 he came to Cambria co, & was in the employ of the Cambria Iron Co most of the remainder of his life. In political faith he adhered to the school of Clay and Harrison, was an old-line whig, and a republican from the organization of the Republican party until his death, and although he took a lively and intelligent interest in the subject of politics, yet never sought office. He was a consistent member of the Methodist Episcopal church. Mr. Barclay's early life was spent in various pursuits. He is one of the few now left who operated on the PA canal & old Portage RR, a thoroughfare then of great importance, but which now lives only on the page of history & in the minds of those who witnessed its rise and fall. In 1855, after his marriage, he went to work for the Cambria Iron company and remained continuously in the employ of that company until 1878. We next find him serving on the police force of the borough of Johnstown, and, later, as weighmaster two years. He then teamed for a number of years and served for a time as watchman at the Gautier works of the Cambria Iron company until 1889. In 1888 he removed to Roxbury and has resided there ever since.
The Barclay family certainly did its patriotic duty in that crisis extending from 1860 to 1865, in which the life of the nation was threatened; for, in addition to serving ten months as quartermaster in the Army of the Potomac, he has five brothers who saw duty in that memorable conflict.
Mr. Barclay was a strong anti-slavery man and abolitionist, hence upon the organization of the Republican party he became one of its original supporters, and has continued to vote with his first love to the present time, believing that upon the whole, it stands for those principles and has advocated those measures best adapted to the needs of the country, and in 1894, upon the organization of the municipal government of the borough of Roxbury, was chosen it first burgess, and is a director and member of the executive committee of the Roxbury Park association. On January 5, 1855, he married Mary, a daughter of Michael Barnhart, and to this union have been born eleven children, seven boys and four girls, of whom four boys and three girls are yet living.

[NI141533] Andrew was killed while breaking a horse that fell backwards on him.

[NI141597] they lived on a farm in Cherryhill Township that they rented from Snide Rodkey.
They lived on farm in Cherryhill Twp. that they rented from Snide Rodkey. After Andrews death (he was killed while breaking a horse that fell backward on him), Mollie was left with 8 chldn to raise. Her parents gave her & her 2 bros (Sebastian & Peter) a parcel of land. Her bro John lived on homestead & the other chldn received money. She sold some of her farm equipment in 1886 to build a home on her land. She & her chldn worked very hard to make a living. They had a beautiful home but she sold it to the coal co. The co put a mine in & a town was built named "Shanktown". She then bought a house in Cookport where she had many relatives & friends. She lived in Cookport until she was no longer able to stay alone. She then moved in with her daug Mary until her death Mar 26 1919. She is bur in Diamondville cem.

[NI141600] Akron Beacon Journal (OH): while visiting her daug on her 84th b-day who was celebrating her 21st b-day party.

[NI141675] Have no record of his relatives. Info states that he was left as a young boy with friends in PA when his parents & sibs moved west.
