[NI144649] From Biographical & Porttrait Cyclopedia of Cambria Co., PA 1896: DANIEL W. LUKE, a coal operator, South Fork, this co, s/o John & Charlotte (George) Luke, & b Mar 23 1841, Blacklick Twp, this Co. He was edu in common & select schools & at age 18 began teaching & followed it 2 yrs. He left the school room & took up arms in defense of the honor of the country. He enlisted as a pvt, but was promoted to a 1st Sgt. He took part in following battles: Great Falls, Jul 7 1861; Falmouth, Apr 18 1862; Mechanicsville, Jun 26; Chickahominy, Jun 27, Cold Harbor, on same day; Culpepper, Jul 12; Glendale, Jun 30; Nelson farm, Frazier farm & Turkey Bend, on same date; Gumtown or Gainesville, Aug 28-29 1862; Bull Run, Aug 30; White Oak Swamp, Jun 30 1862; Malvern Hill, Jul 1; Williamsburg, Jul 11 1862; Gettysburg, Jul 1 1863; Manassas & Chester Gaps, Jul 21-23 1863; Rappahannock Sta, Brandy Sta & Kitty Ford, Aug 1 to 3 1863; Bristoe Sta, Oct 14 1863; Beverly Ford & Bradley's Sta, Jan 9 1863; Warrenton Junction, May 3 1863: Rappahannock Sta, Sep 4-19 & Oct 10 1863; Mine run, Nov 26 & 28 1863, & the Wilderness, May 5 1864. He was captured at battle of Wilderness on May 5, & taken to Andersonville prison, where he was held 4 mos & was then taken to Florence, SC, where he was held 3 mos longer before being exchanged. While in prison at the latter pl, he with 9 others under a guard of 10 men were sent out to gather wood; watching his opportunity, Mr. Luke made a break for freedom, the guard fired at him, but missed, & he made his way into a swamp. Here he carefully concealed himself until night when he tried to make good his escape. He had not proceeded far until he heard the tonguing of blood hounds; but upon their coming up to him he discovered they were not of the ferocious kind, & he easily quieted them, & following their guide some distance came upon a corn field. The owner, not knowing of their presence, fired a gun, & the dogs fled. He then proceeded & coming to a swollen stream, the Great Pedee river, improvised a raft of rails with which he tried to cross it, but in mid stream it parted, & he was forced to swim for the shore. Soon afterward, near Cheraw, NC, abt 60 mis from the prison, he was surprised & captured by 4 Confederates, who returned him to prison. After retiring from the serv he again taught school a few yrs, & in 1871, came to South Fork, where he began his career as a coal producer. He is at present super of Aurora Coal co, of which he was one of the organizers, a memb Mountain coal co, a memb & manager of South Fork Supply co, & owner of 1/3 int in another tract of coal land consisting of 700 acs in Adams Twp, pres of Roaring Springs Land & Mining co, Joplin, MO. This co with a cap'l stock of $100,000 was organized for purpose of developing lead & zinc mines of that section of MO. He is also a dir of South Fork Water co. Politically Mr. Luke is dem, & as he has always been kwn to be staunch friend of the cause of edu he has been kept, with exception of 1 term, continuously on board of school dirs of his district since organization in 1871, & is at the present time (1896) sec of the board. He has been postmaster at South Fork under both of Cleveland's admins. In Masonic circles Mr. Luke stands deservedly high, being memb of Summit Lodge, No 312, F & AM, Portage Chptr, RAM, Oriental Commandery, No 61, Knights Templar. Mr. Luke has been twice m; 1st Francis P., d/o William Davis, Clarion Co., PA, w/birth of 8 chdn: John Howard, merchant of South Fork; William Tell; Maggie Oliva & Katie Lenora, deceased; Daniel Wallace, Mary Florence, Josephine & Ralph Waldo, at home. Jun 26 1894, he m 2nd Catharine, d/o Joseph W. Wilson, Blair Co., 1 chd, Laban Lee, has blessed this union. Daniel W. Luke was b to inheritance of a noble character & a good name, which he has preserved through every trial & vicissitude of life. He is one of the representative business men of the State who have not only deserved success, but won it. As a soldier he shirked no duty, but fought well & gallantly battles of his country, & well won a reputation for bravery & courage that will shine with increasing lustre until the final roll call. Mr. Luke, since the age of 18 has been a consistent & earnest memb Meth Episc ch & worker in the cause of Christianity, & it is with happy satisfaction he realized the fact that his family are following in his footsteps. This to him is more to be desired than honor or great gain.
