[NI146241] Johnstown Trib 11 Apr 1918 - AARON SCHMUCKER FOUND DEAD IN BED - Aged Hooversville Res Passes Away Unexpectedly at son's Home Here. Aaron SCHMUCKER, 77, whose home was at Hooversville, was found dead in bed at home of his son, Howard SCHMUCKER, 734 Grant St, 6th Ward, early yesterday morn. He suffered a slight stroke of paralysis 2 mos ago, but rallied a short time later & was able to go abt again. He came to Johnstown Mar 30 to join his wife who has been here for several wks. Mr. SCHMUCKER was abt his son's home on Tue, retiring shortly after 9 pm. He got up at midnight, & aroused his son, who found his father dressing himself, under the impression that it was daybreak. A short time later the man returned to bed & suffered a 2nd stroke. He was dead when his wife called him yesterday morn. The deceased was s/o Rev. Joseph SCHMUCKER, a minister of Dunkard Ch, & was b between Jennerstown & Jenner Crossing Rds, Somerset Co May 21 1841. He was 1 of family of 6 chdn & last of the no. to pass away. For many yrs Aaron SCHMUCKER was engaged in farming near Shanksville, removing to Hooversville abt 8 yrs ago. The deceased was m 3 times. His 1st wife Esther DINGES, whose only child Mrs. W.G. FRITZ d Berlin, Somerset Co, 6 wks ago. His 2nd wife Mary REITZ, aunt of Albert TRENT of this city. 6 chdn were b to this union, 1 of whom, Mrs. Minnie WALKER, d some yrs ago. Surviving are: George W. SCHMUCKER, Dixon, IL; Charles C. SCHMUCKER, Downey; Elmer SCHMUCKER , OR; Mrs. Silas COBAUGH, 5th Ward, & Howard SCHMUCKER, 6th Ward. His 3rd wife Mrs. Mayme GARDNER. She survives him, with 17 gchdn & 2 ggchdn. 1 of his gsons, Henry SCHMUCKER, is in training with troops in TX. Funeral servs eve at Schmucker home here by Rev. J. Fremont Watson, Somerset St COB. The body taken to Shanksville tomorrow morn for bur Downey Cem tomorrow afternoon.

He was the father of Miss Hannah Thomas, a nurse at the Johnstown City Hospital. Miss Thomas was summoned to Beaverdale late yesturday afternoon by message announcing his critical illness.

Mrs. Medling was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Petersburg. She had been employed at J.C. Blair Co., Huntingdon, and at the Huntingdon Silk Mill. She retired from the forestry department at Greenwood Nursery. Mrs. Medling was a life member of the Cloid K. Davis American Legion Post Auxiliary, Petersburg, and a former member of the Petersburg Volunteer Fire Company Auxiliary. Surviving are daughter, Louise Carper of Petersburg, three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great grandchildren.

Otherwise, if the said Mary, my beloved wife, should alter her station of life, or change her name, she is then liable to leave the premises hereby given & bequeathed, with the moveable property, to my other legatees, as hereafter mentioned at the option of my executors. 3rdly, I Give & bequeath to my beloved children David, my daug Elizabeth SMOUSE, Henry, Nicholas, Peter, & Abraham, an equal part of all my estate, real & personal, only excepting as aforesaid, excepted to my beloved wife, to be divided as hereinafter stated at the option of my executors. 4thly, I give & bequeath to my beloved sons, Nicholas & Peter, to them, their heirs, executors & administrators, forever all the hereinafter sounded & described tracts or parcels of land. Also one other tract of land situated on the south side of the Juniata River in Colerain Twp in the Co. & state aforesaid, adjoining the aforesaid tract of land containing 86 acs & bordering the same tract of land which William HARTLY sold to me by Article 86 Reference, thereunto being had will at large appear the said two tracts of land being valued by the above named testator for the sum of 600 pounds lawful money of the state aforesaid to be charged to the said Nicholas & Peter, my beloved sons & no farther. [NI146567] Wills: Henry Koons, 1855: Bedford Twp, Bedford Co, PA Henry Koontz was a s/o Adam & Mary Counts/Koons/Koontz, b Oct 4 1765 & d Feb 1 1855. Henry was m to O'della Smouse, d/o John & Mary Dority Wolfram Smouse. Came to Providence Twp in 1785 - b in Virginia. Listed in the Bedford Co. tax rolls in 1785 as having 100 acs of land in Colerain Twp.
Henry located in the wilds of Bedford Co., PA, having cut a road through the forest until he came to a place which suited him. He lived in his wagon for 1 yr, by which time he had cleared a plot, erected buildings, & was ready for permanent location. Henry was originally buried at St. John's in Bedford. However, when the church was expanded his grave & other's from the Koontz family were moved to St. Pauls (near Cessna) as they had donated the land that St. Pauls was built on. He d in the 90th yr of his life.

Will of Henry Koons, Sr. Will of Henry Koontz: I Henry Koontz of Bedford Twp, Co. of Bedford & State of PA, being old but of sound mind & memory & considering the uncertainty of the times when it may please Providence to call me hence do make & publish this my last will & testament hereby revoking any & all wills heretofore by me made. 1st, it is my desire that the Expenses necessarily incurred for my funeral be pd by my Executors hereafter named out of my personal property. 2ndly, it is my will & desire that all my just debts by me owing at the time of my death be also pd by my said Executors out of my Estate as soon as they can after my decease. 3rdly, It is my will that the bedsteads, bedding & books, belonging to me, be equally divided among all my chldn, the child of my daug Polly who was intermarried with John silver, to receive their Mothers share. The said legacy to remain in the hands of my Executors until the said chldn shall respectively arrive at the age of 21 yrs my Executors (?) to have the money first (?) interest as soon as it becomes due & to remain so until the chldn arrive at the age before mentioned. 5thly, $250 to be pd to my daug Elizabeth, intermarried with Peter Winegardner 5 yrs after my decease. 6thly, $250 to be pd to my son David Koontz, his heirs or assigns, 6 yrs after my decease. 7th, $250 to my son George, his heirs or assigns 7 yrs after my decease. 8thly, $250 to be pd to my daug Sally Yont, intermarried with Jacob Yont 8 yrs after my decease. 9thly, $250 to be pd to my daug Odilla 9 yrs after my decease. No interest to be pd in the foregoing payments until they become due. The 2nd & last payments to be made by my son Henry on the place are to be made in the same order & Succession the 1st are required to be made. The 2nd payment to Philip Mann or my daughter Eve to be made 1 yr after the payment made to Odilla my youngest Daug. My said son Henry retaining $250 himself & is to continue the payments of $250 to the heirs heretofore & to until all are pd. Managing the share of each heir out of the farm $500 no interest to be pd by Henry until the said payments become due. Leaving another farm, called the Ripley Farm, I value at $2500, & if any of my sons with to take the said farm at the said valuation it is my will that the said $2500 be equally pd by the person taking it (the farm) to the rest of my chldn in payments of $150 a yr in the same manner my son Henry is required to make his payments. If non of my sons are willing to take the said farm at the above price, it is my will that my Executors sell it & the proceeds arising from the said sale be equally divided among all my chldn herein before mentioned. 10thly, Catherine Myers who has resided with me for a long time, has been of much serv & attended to my interest & I desire to make 1 provision for her comfort & maintenance during the remainder of her natural life. It is therefore, my will that my son Henry retain $500 in his hands, to be kept out of the share of each heir arising from the real estate equally, during the lifetime of said Catherine & pay her the interest thereof annually, after the death of said Catherine the $500 to be equally divided among the chldn herein before named. & further the said Catherine is to have a mare to use when she wishes to ride, she is also to have 1 cow of her choice from among mine, my son Henry to furnish food for the mare & cow. The said Catherine to reside in that part of my house she now occupies - it is my desire & will that so long as my daug Odilla remain single she reside with Catherine Myers as she now does. My son Henry to furnish her, my daug with necessaries except clothing. 11thly, it is my will that my Executors pay to my youngest daug Odilla $50 out of the proceeds of the sale of the personal estate, if so much remains after the personal estate the said $50 to come out of the real estate, each of the heirs paying & equal amount to make up the $50. Eckrote, of Schnecksville, R.D., former resident & blacksmith of Sybertsville, passed away in the Allentown Hosp Sat afternoon, following an illness of 6 mos. He was stricken with a heart attack on Fri. Mr. Eckrote was b at Conyngham & was a s/o Aaron & Amanda Knelly Eckrote. He was well known in the Hazleton region, having been a resident of Sybertsville for many yrs. He maintained a blacksmith business in that town for 20 yrs & also operated the Hazleton-Sybertsville bus for several yrs. He was a memb of Trinity Luth ch of Hazleton; the Schnecksville Sun School & the Woodmen of the World. Surviving are his wife, Rettie V. Zellner; his mother, Mrs. Amanda Eckrote, of Conyngham, & the following chldn: Mrs. Fred Heckrote, Conyngham; Mrs. William A. [NI146658] John Deeter & Catharine Springer, his wife, settled in Deeter's Gap in 1784 in what was then Brothersvalley & Quemahoning Twp., Bedford Co., PA. This is now Allegheny Twp., Somerset Co. The old homesite is 1 1/2 mis north of PA Rte 21 on the New Baltimore Pike, located between White Horse & Allegheny mtns. John Deeter serv his Co. in the Rev War in the Cumberland Co. Militia, 8th Class. He was pd with worthless paper money for participating in the war. With this money purchased the original 269 1/2 acs of land with a warrant in 1783 from the state of PA. The patent (which meant he had a clear title & would pay taxes on it) was granted in 1794. He lived his entire m life on this farm which eventually totaled more than 1,600 acs of ground. The farm bldgs were located where the cleared land at Deeter's Gap is at present. The wooded area where the Cem. in which John, his wife, Catharine, his eldest son, John, 2 unnamed chldn, & a chld named Henry are bur was once a meadow. A millstone was placed at the gravesite & a pine tree grows on John's grave. Legend has it that a colored man is also bur here but no proof has actually been found. Legend also has it that John was in this part of the country serving with the militia when he met his wife, Catharine. According to John's own records he hired a man named Brown in 1789 to build a dam & a mill. His sawmill & gristmill were among the 1st along the Allegheny Mtn. From that time on he sold lumber & started making & selling millstones which sold for as much as $36 a pr. He sold meat, hides, salt, rum, butter, grain, & garden veges. He traded 1 pr of millstones for a barrel of brandy & then sold the brandy. John Deeter was a religious man. According to his own records between 1812 & 1816 he did a lot of business with a Luth minister named John Deeter Peterson. The minister bought lumber from Deeter & used this lumber to build a church. No records have been found showing these 2 men to be any relation even though their names are similar // In the name of God amen, I John Deeter of Alegany Twp. Somerset Co. & State of PA being unwell but of sound disposing mind Memory & understanding thanks be given unto God calling into mind the mortality of my Body & Knowing that it is appointed for all meant once to die do make & ordain this my Last will & Testament that is to say in Principally & first of all I Give & Recommend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God that Gave it, & my Body I Recommend to the earth to be Bur in decent Christian Burial at the discretion of my Executor hereafter mentioned, & as Touching Such worldly Estate wherewith it hath Pleased God to bless me with in this Life, I give devise & dispose of the Same in the Following manner & form. It is my will that my Just & Lawful debts & funeral & other Expenses Shall be first paid off as soon as conveniently may be after my Decease. It is my will & do order & direct the my Son Samuel Deeter Shall Give unto my beloved wife Catharinea the use of the 2 Back rooms where she now lives at present & part of the Seller the stove is to stand in said room where it stands at present for her use & part of the gartin & must keep 2 cows for her & Shall feed the said 2 cows as he feeds his own cows & to be in the same pasture with his own cows, & is to give her 15 Bushels of wheat a yr & he is to get said wheat ground into flower & to deliver the flower & brann into her house, & must give her 100 wgt of pork, & 50 wgt of beef, 1 bushel of Salt, bushels of potatoes, & cabich, coffee, tea, & sugar as much as she Shall want for her own use, & apples & cider as much as she Shall want, 1 bed & bedstead, 1 chest & spinning wheel & the loom with the geers & cubert 1 pot, 1 tea kettle, & the third part of the rest of my household Furniture Shall be for my wife Catarina during her Life & my Son Samuel Shall give her every yr during her Life 6 pounds of neckled flax, 6 pounds of tow, & 6 pounds of good wool. She Shall keep 6 chickens for her use or more, & her fire wood Shall be hauled to the house & cut Small for the Stove & Shall have her Share of the Kitchen fire, & the 2 remaining parts of my household Furniture Shall be Equally devided among my 6 chldn Except the Stove & the Blacksmith tools & all the Stock of cattle which I bequeath to my Son Samuel Deeter, & the Stove after the death of his mother. It is my will & I do order & direct unto my Son Samuel Deeter the Plantation where I now Live on with all the buildings & thereto belonging situate in Allegheny Twp. Somerset Co. & State aforesaid for the Sum of $475. Said Land Laying & being on the turnpike rd Containing 269 acs & is to pay as follows, To my Daug Magdalena Deeter now Magdalena Grove $200 Lawful money of the US 1 yr after the Death of my Wife Catherina. In 1813 he sold this same tract of land for the sum of 900 pounds English currency & moved to Summerhill Twp, Cambria Co. Here he started farming & lived the rest of his days.

[NI146810] John Paul lived in what is now West Vincent Twp, which bordered Coventry Twp. on the west. He helped to found a German Ref Ch in Coventry Twp, in 1743, now known as Brownback's Ch. In his historical sketch of this congregation, Rev. J. Lewis Fruck says some of the founders came from the Palatinate, Germany, "but, as the documents show, the greater part were from Switzerland." The congregation was organized at a meeting held May 19 1743, when a constitution was adopted. 36 membs signed the constitution. The list of names includes that of John Paul. The same day, John Paul, along with other founders, signed a call to Rev. Jacob Lischey to become pastor. Taxed in 1739. Will made 3/7/1778. Bur Brownback Ch Cem, Chester Co., PA. John Paul naturalized 9/24/1767 - had to be at least 21 yrs of age. Paul 1st taxed 1739 - Letters of administration 3/7/1778.
