Miss Matilda Allison Colbert, aged 86 yrs, is dead, having expired this morn at her home, 523 Bedford st, 4th Ward, following a long illness of complication of diseases. The body was this afternoon removed by the John Henderson Co in the G.A. Gonder home, 587 Bedford st, where funeral servs will be held at 2 pm Fri by Rev. Leroy M. Humes, pastor of Cooper-ave M.E. Ch, bur Benshoff's Cem. The deceased was a d/o Robert & Rebecca (Witherow) Colbert & was b in VA in 1835. Her parents came north over 70 yrs ago & located at Cambria Furnace below Coopersdale. Miss Colbert was a sis of Mrs. Ellen Van, Haynes st; & Mrs. Helen Wonderly & Otha Colbert, 523 Bedford st. She was one of the oldest membs of the Meth Episc Ch of Coopersdale.

After suffering for a long time from paralysis, Mrs. Mary Jane Herdman, w/o John Herdman, d shortly before noon today at the home of her son-in-law & daug, Mr. & Mrs. Frank Faith, No. 178 Collins st, 13th Ward, in her 79th yr. The deceased's maiden name was Colbert. She was b in WV & was m in 1852 at Cambria Furnace, below Coopersdale. Mr. Herdman d in the 13th Ward 14 mos ago. The deceased is survived by the following chldn: Sarah, w/o Leonard Burkhardt, Cambria City; Lucinda, w/o George Wonder (Gonder), Wood st, Robert Herdman, also of Wood st; John, at home, & Lillie, w/o Frank Faith, mentioned above. Besides these, she is survived by 24 gchldn & 12 ggchldn. [NI146949] Johnstown Trib issue 21 Aug 1908: John Herdman, one of the oldest residents of Johnstown & a pioneer employee of the Cambria Iron Co., d at the home of his son-in-law & daug, Mr. & Mrs. Frank Faith, No. 178 Collins st, 13th Ward, at 10:30 pm last night, in his 80th yr. Mr. Herdman had been ill for 13 mos with a complication of diseases, which caused his death. The deceased was b in Blair Co, PA. He came to Johnstown in 1848 & located at Cambria Furnace, below Perkinsville, now Coopersdale, where he worked until the Cambria Iron Works were started in 1853. He worked for this concern until abt a yr ago. Not long after he located at Cambria Furnace he & Miss Jane Colbert were united in marriage. Mrs. Herdman survives her husb. She is a sis of Mrs. Helen Wonderley, Mrs. Ella Van, Miss Mollie Colbert, & William & Otho Colbert, of this place, & John Colbert, who left here some time ago for the West. Besides his wife, Mr. Herdman is survived by these chldn: Sarah, w/o Leonard Burkhardt, Cambria City; John C. Herdman, at home; Lucinda, w/o George Gonder, Horner st, 7th Ward; Robert, Wood st, 7th Ward, & Lillian, w/o Frank Faith, mentioned above. There are 24 gchldn & 25 ggchldn, the majority of whom reside in Johnstown & vicinity. Mrs. David Boyle, Johnstown, is the deceased's only sis, & William Hale, Blair Co., is his only half-bro. The deceased fought in Battery D, 1st PA Light Artillery, during the Rebellion, the battery having been composed of young men form Blair & Philadelphia co.s. Their Capt was Edward H. Flood. Mr. Herdman was a lifelong memb of Meth Episc Ch & for many yrs was a class leader at the Franklin-st ch, resigning within the past yr owing to sickness. He was a memb of Conemaugh Lodge, IOOF, & Emory Fisher Post 30, Grand Army of the Republic. The funeral will take place at 2 pm Mon & servs will be in charge of officers of Conemaugh Lodge of IOOF. Rev. R.C. Miller, pastor of Trinity Evang Ch, & Rev. S.B. Laverty, pastor of Cooper-ave M. E. Ch, will conduct the servs at the house in the absence of the deceased's pastor, Rev. J.W.G. Mrs. Sarah Burkhard, 85, Pioneer Resid Cambria City, d 8:25 pm 31 Oct 1938 at home of her son-in-law & daug, Mr. & Mrs. John Ernest, 154 Adams St, after an illness of 3 wks of a complication of ailments. She was the w/o Leonard Burkhard, also of an old Cambria City family, who d 15 yrs ago. Funeral servs for Mrs. Burkhard at 2:30 pm Thu Ernest home, Rev. W.K. Anderson, D.D., of Franklin St MEC, to officiate. Bur St. Mary's Ch Cem., Lower Yoder Twp. John Blimmel, mortician in charge. She was b in VA Oct 7 1853, d/o John & Mary (Colbert) Herdman, who came to Johnstown when she was a sm girl & located at old Cambria Furnace, below Coopersdale. A short time later the family moved to Cambria City. Ms Herdman & Leonard Burkhard m Dec 19 1871, St. Mary's German Cath Ch, now Immaculate Conception Ch, Broad St. In the flood of 1889 their home withstood the waters, although damaged. Mrs. Burkhard also went through the St. Patrick's Day flood of 1936, residing then on Fronheiser St. Her father was a vet Civil War. It was said in family recollections that Mrs. Burkhard, then a mere girl, boarded the train that carried the recruits for the Union Army to Harrisburg, to accompany her father to camp, but was put off the train at South Fork. Mrs. Burkhard was a familiar figure in the West End & was known to hundreds of people in Cambria City sector for her charity. Mrs. Burkhard was a memb Franklin St MEC, the Women's Relief Corps of GAR & of Lady Menoher Post, VFW. Surviving are these chldn: Margaret, w/o Michael J. Johnstown Trib issue 20 Mar 1923: Leonard Peter Burkhard, aged 72, former city policeman & one of the best known residents of Cambria City, expired at 3:15 pm yesterday at Burkhard residence, 317 Eighth avenue, Sixteenth Ward, following a long illness. Mr. Burkhard�s health had been impaired for several yrs, but he was able to be abt until a short time ago. Leonard P. Burkhard was s/o Peter & Elizabeth (Burkett) Burkhard & b Hesse-Darmstadt, Germany, Mar 16 1851. At the age of 4, Leonard Burkhard came to Amer with his parents & resided at the old Cambria furnace for several yrs, the Burkhard family later removing to Johnstown. Leonard Burkhard attended the parochial schools & received 1st holy communion in St. Joseph�s German Cath Ch when that edifice stood on Singer st. He went to work for the Cambria Iron Co & at the time of the strike in the mills in the early 70�s went to Cleveland, OH, where he was employed for 5 yrs, again returning to Johnstown, where he spent the remainder of his life. Leonard Burkhard serv as a patrolman under the administration of the late W. Horace Rose, 1st Mayor of Johnstown, from 1890 to 1893. He later went to work for the Goenner Brewing Co, after which he transferred to the Cambria Brewing Co, where he continued to work for abt 20 yrs. Mr. Burkhard retired abt 6 yrs ago. Leonard P. Burkhard & Miss Sarah Herdman, d/o Mr. & Mrs. John Herdman, m Dec 19 1869. They celebrated their golden wedding ann. Dec 19 1919. Mrs. Burkhard, who is in excellent health, survives her husb, with the following chldn: Margaret, w/o Michael Lorditch, 8th ave; Carrie, w/o Charles Alth, 14th Ward; Ida, w/o William Meyers, Garfield st; David L. Burkhard, Brownstown; Rose, w/o Homer Kendel, Roxbury; Edward Burkhard, rear 323 Main st 2nd Ward; Leonard Burkhard, Jr., at home; Mary, w/o Carl Ernest, M st, & Anna, w/o Albert Adams, Church st. 32 gchldn & 2 ggchldn survive. Mrs. Lucinda (Herdman) Gonder, 82, native & former resid Johnstown, d yesterday afternoon 18 Jun 1939 at home of gdaug Mrs. Robert Shank of this place. She had been ill more than a yr & had been bedfast for past 11 mos. She was d/o Jonathan & Mary Jane (Colbert) Herdman, both deceased, & was b Jan 1 1857. Her husb George A. Gonder, passed away 2 yrs ago Johnstown, after which Mrs. Gonder came to Shanksville to make her home. Mrs. Gonder was memb Franklin St Meth Ch, Johnstown, Sons of Vets Auxiliary, P.O.S. of A. Auxiliary, Woodmen of the World Auxiliary & the Menoher Post Auxiliary, all Johnstown. She was twice m. Her 1st husb Jacob Ross, perished in Johnstown Flood of 1889. 5 chldn preceded her in death, 4 having been b to 1st union. She was last surviving memb of her family, a sis, Mrs. Sarah Burkhard, having passed away in Johnstown a yr ago. Surviving is son, Andy Ross, 236 Wood Ave, Johnstown, 2 gsons, a gdaug & 1 ggdaug. [NI146955] Johnstown Trib issue 8 Apr 1914: J.C. HERDMAN DEAD IN 7TH WARD Man Who Had Been A Paralytic During Past 18 Yrs Expired This Morning. John C. Herdman, aged 58 yrs, who had been a paralytic since 1896, d between 1 & 2 am this morn at the home of his bro-in-law & sis, Mr. & Mrs. Frank Faith, 626 Wood st, 7th Ward. He became ill with pneumonia a wk ago. The deceased began to work for the Cambria Iron Co when he was but 10 yrs old. He started in the dept under the late John Kratzer & was later transferred to the RR dept under superintendent John H. Morley, for whom he was working at the time he was stricken with paralysis. The deceased was b at Cambria Furnace, below Coopersdale, & was s/o John & Mary Colbert Herdman. His father d in 13th Ward in Aug, 1908, & his mother in the following yr 1909. John C. Herdman was a bro of Robert Herdman, Wood st; Mrs. Leonard Burkett, Cambria City; Mrs. George Gonder, Bedford st; & Mrs. Lillian Faith, w/o Frank Faith. Johnstown Daily Trib issue Sat 27 Jul 1918: JOHN W. HERDMAN KILLED IN FRANCE 7th Ward Cpl Makes Supreme Sacrifice While Serving in 7th Infantry Corp. John William Herdman, of Co B, 7th US Infantry, was killed in France on Jul 15. A dispatch concerning his death was received from Adj.-Gen. McCain, of Washington, by his father, Robert S. Herdman, of 235 Wood st, last eve. It reads as follows: "Deepy regret to inform you that Cpl. J.W. Herdman, infantry, is officially reported as killed in action on Jul 15." John W. Herdman enlisted at the Army recruiting station in the Nemo building, this city, in Jul, 1917, & was sent from here to Gettysburg, where he was assigned to the 7th Infantry. He remained on the famous Civil War battlefield in Adams Co. until last Oct, when he was transferred to Camp Greene, Charlotte, NC. He crossed the Atlantic with his regt late in Mar or early in Apr. John William Herdman was b in the 7th Ward on Mar 2 1885, & s/o Robert S. & Sadie Miller Herdman, 235 Wood st. He & Miss Mary Kirschner, d/o William Kirschner, Daisytown, were m at St. Joseph's parsonage here about 14 years ago by the Rev. Father Robert, O.S.B. Mrs. Herdman & her 2 chldn, Mary & Franklin John Miller, reside at 224 Wood st. The deceased began work for the Cambria Steel Co some yrs ago & later became an employee of the Johnstown Engineering Co. At the time of going into the Army he was employed as a pipe cutter by Thomas W. Jones, the Moxham plumber. John W. Herdman was a memb of Lieut. Speer Orr Camp, Sons of Veterans, & was at one time a Lt. of I Co, 8th Regt, Sons of Veterans Reserves. He was made a Cpl in the 7th Infantry during his stay at Gettysburg. Both gfathers of Cpl. Herdman serv in Civil War, John Herdman in Battery D, 1st PA Light Artillery & Peter Miller in Co K, 206th Regt, PA Vol Infantry. They have been dead for some time. Besides his widow & chldn, Cpl. Herdman is survived by his parents & a sis, Stella, wife of Thomas Burke, 115 Horner st. 3 cousins of the late Cpl are with Pershing's army in France & one is in England. The cousins in France are Clyde Miller, son of William Miller, who is in the Signal Corps; Herbert Miller, son of the late Nathaniel Miller, who is with the artillery; & Joseph Rundle, of the South Side, who is with an infantry regiment. The other cousin, Leonard Burkhardt, jr., of Cambria City, is in a training school in England. Cpl. Miller, in addition to his connection with the Sons of Veterans, was an honorary member of the Johnstown Reed Band & the Home Beneficial Assc of the 17th Ward. Cpl. Miller was the first of the members of Speer Orr Camp to fall in the present war. // His Mother's Day Letter. The last letter received by Mrs. Robert S. Herdman was written on Mother's Day & arrived here last mo. It reads as follows: "Dear Mother: As you know this is Mother's Day & our good officers reminded us of it & asked us to write to our mothers & ask them not to forget us in our work. Just a little prayer each day will help us to win our victory which we will with God's help for the loved ones at home. It will mean a great deal to us. We are getting along fine with our work & will try to end it soon. We are all well & in the best of health, & all hope to be home by fall. "How is father? Hope he is well again. Sister told me in her letter that he was very sick again. (Mr. Herdman is suffering from heart trouble & has not been able to leave his home for several wks). All the soldiers here are in the best of health & hope to keep on that way. I will close now & look for a nice big letter from home. Letters make the soldiers feel so good. Well, good bye, & love to all. From your loving son, "JOHN" At the end of the letter Cpl. Herdman placed a violet plucked from the battlefield for his mother. The last letter received in the U S from Cpl. Herdman is in possession of Mrs. Pearl Burke Smith, of Pittsburg, a niece of the Cpl. The contents of this letter are not known by the local relatives. Mrs. Smith received her letter on Jul 5.

[NI147051] Johnstown Trib issue Nov 1938: Jack Embedded in Throat Results in Child's Death. A jack swallowed some mos ago by Dona May Faith, 4-yr-old d/o Delmas & Ida (Harris) Faith, 202 Pine St, 7th Ward, yesterday resulted in her death at Mem Hosp. The child failed to recover from a difficult & delicate operation which she underwent in an effort to remove the article, which was discovered through X-ray examination as deeply embedded in her throat. Surgeons believed the child had swallowed the playing jack some mos ago, possibly as long as a yr ago & that it became lodged in her throat, gradually becoming deeply embedded in tissue. Wed eve she was removed to the 8th Ward hosp & underwent the delicate operation after X-ray examinations disclosed the article in her throat. As a result of the death, membs of the hosp surgical staff today urged parents to procure medical attention immediately for their chldn when there is any suspicion that a foreign article may become lodged internally. Funeral servs for the Faith chld will be held at 3 pm tomorrow at Christian & Missionary Alliance Ch, Wood St, with Rev. E.D. Pinney, pastor, officiating. Bur Grandview Cem., under direction of Mortician Fred G. Geisel, Dale. The chld is survived by her parents & a sis, Janet Lee. [NI147279] Valentine settled in Bedford Co. abt 1771. He fought in the Amer Rev in various branches of the Bedford/Cumberland Co. militias. He m Catherine (?) abt 1775. He was a farmer & had a distillary on his land as was common practice at the time. He also served as a tax collector for the Co. between 1796 & 1805. He later purchased land in Hopewell Twp. where some of his children resided after their respective marriages. Valentines will was signed & dated on Oct 19 1819, & subsequently probated on Nov 2 1819. A copy of the will is available at this web site. He is said to have been bur in a family cem located on his farm which now has few remnants of headstones. His son, Valentine Wirick, Jr. & his sons wife, Barbara Brunner, are also buried there.

In the name of Almighty God I make this my last will & testament since it has pleased him to bless me with considerable of this world's goods & thinking that my days are few on earth. I therefore desire to have my real & personal property used in the following manner: 1st, my 2 sons Peter J. & Jacob shall have all that now belongs to me except what is in the house that shall be for my dear wife Polly. She can do with it what she sees best. 2nd. They must pay to her that is their (mother) $120 a yr as long as she lives also give her 1 cow providing she desires to have one; find feed pasture room in the cellar & room in the springhouse; also room in the house to live in. 3rd for which they my 2 sons Peter J. & Jacob must pay all my debts & pay to my daug Catherine Stanton & my Grand Chld Mary A. Shaffer $300 that is the 2 together. Should my Grand Chld Mary A. Shaffer not be of age at that time my daug Catherine Stanton is to have the $300 herself & my Grand Chld Mary A. Prior to going to Canal Zone he was attached to 386th Bomb Squadron of the 5th Air Force. Ellsworth SPIKER was b Aug 8 1921, Somerset Co., s/o Calvin & Nellie (FISHER) SPIKER. Surviving in addition to parents are 8 bros & sis': Charles, Calvin, Robert, Thomas, Betty & Janie SPIKER, all at home; Mrs. Frank BORCHICK, Hollsopple, & Mrs. Robert MORGAN, Johnstown. The remains will be shipped to Hollsopple for funeral servs. Arrangements are in charge of Deaner Funeral Home, Stoystown.
