[NI149982] "History of Bedford, Somerset & Fulton counties" 1884. Waterman, Watkins & Co. p. 353. "William HAMMER, for many yrs a minister in the church of the Ev Associator, (Colerain twp.), a native of St. Clair twp, & by occup a farmer & shoemaker. In 1836 he m Margaret Beisel, who bore 9 chdrn: Deliliah (Ling), Hezekiah, John B., Elizabeth (Ling), Isabel (Christ), William, Margaret (Hare), Jeremiah, Isaac (deceased)."
A farmer most of his life, he was also engaged in shoemaking. He serv as Minister of Evang Assc for number of yrs around time of Civil War. He also held town offices during his lifetime. William made 2 wills, neither of which appear to have been probated; near end of his life he placed all his property in the hands of his wife for some reason. His wife Margaret made a will; bequeathing everything to John B Hammer; in return he was to provide for his father's wants all of his life; & see he was bur beside her. His obit is from Aug 21 1891 THE EVANGELICAL HAMMER. Father William Hammer, Pleasantville, Bedford Co, PA, d Aug 3 1891, aged 74y 7m 5d. Father H. was converted at age of 20 yrs, & united with Ev. Assc. He was 1 among 1st membs Bedford circuit. He was class-leader of 1st society organized on this charge, & later on he was engaged in ministerial work & not without success. For a number of yrs his doors were opened for preaching of gospel, & quite a number of souls were saved, many of whom are still living & are pillars in ch. He leaves 8 chdn, 39 gchdn & 12 ggchdn; his companion, 1 chd & 10 gchdn having preceded him. Funeral by write, assisted by Wm. A Reininger, J.L. Mull.

[NI149988] From book "Johann Frantz Hammer - Palatine Pioneer" Michael Hammer apparently was 1st of 3 bros to move to Bedford Co, PA since he appears to have settled there sometime in late 1793. He settled in Chestnut Ridge area. In history of Bedford, Somerset & Fulton Cos we read: Among 1st settlers on Chestnut Ridge was Michael Hammer, from MD, who settled on land where his descendants still live. His sons were Michael, Samuel, John I., & Daniel. The latter, now in East St. Clair twp, is only survivor. His daus, all of whom are dead, were Betsy, Catherine (Frazier), Margaret (McGrew), & Mary (Bowers). John I. lived on homestead until 1880, when he d at age 80y. He m 1st Mary J. Daily, & 2nd Lydia Harmon. One of his sons, Joseph, was in late war & d in hosp. Prior to her death in 1928, Mary Robinette Haines, a ggdau of Michael Hammer, committed to paper some of history of her family as told to her by her parents & gparents. According to her, Michael & Margert Hammer brought only their clothes, a bucket, & a spoon when they came to Bedford Co. After purchasing their land, they went into the forest & cleared enough space to build a log house near good spring water. They made their own furniture, cooked their meals & baked their bread & pies in a Dutch oven set over hot coals in fireplace. They raised their own flax, spread it on ground to bleach & rot the wood fiber for 30 dys or more, then scutched, hackled, corded to toe from the fiber, spun the flax into yarn & then wove it into linen, thread, sheets, towels, & various wearing apparel. They raised, wove & spun, & colored their own wool, & manufactured it onto many useful purposes. Their cows & cattle were pastured & grazed in forest. Mrs. Haines recalled her mother telling her how when they went to bring in the cows, it was necessary to observe certain land marks to keep from getting lost. They would often find several deer grazing with cattle. Their log house consisted of 1 room upstairs & 1 down.

Michael Hammer Seal testament in the presence of us Benjamin Vore Nathan Garretson Michael's pre-occupation with the welfare of his daus Elizabeth & Anne, as reflected in his will, undoubtedly arose from Elizabeth's being mentally handicapped. Whether dau Anne was afflicted with the same condition is not known.

[NI150328] James McGrew was b abt 1708 Tyrone Co, Ireland. Through accumulation of evidence, it can be concluded that James m more than once. File at LDS shows that he was m twice, as do the Quaker records. The problem is that they have different wives for him. Putting together all records, we come up with 3 different ms. 1st, he m Mary Dick. 2nd he m Mary Finley, Amagh Co, Ireland. She is d/o John Finley & Mary Barclay. James & Mary Finley m at Old Swedes Ch, DE, 20/Dec/1736. Mary was b 5/Jul/1715 & d 10/Nov/1766. There is a wedding date for a 3rd m for James, which could prove the death date of Mary Finley in error. According to Quaker records, James m Mary Ridgeway, a widow, 11/Dec/1760, 6 yrs before Mary Finley is supposed to have d. James d after 19/Dec/1792. The Bible records of James Cox McGrew, on which the McGrew portion of Boyd Genealogy is based, does not list Mary Dick at all. It states James m twice. One of James descendents became a governor of the state of KS. James was assessed in London Grove, Chester Co, in 1729 & 1734.

James McGrew (X His Mark) Signed, Sealed & Pronounced & Declared as my Last will & testament in presence of Archibald McGrew, Wm. McGrew
An immigrant from Ireland, he spent his adult life farming in Menallen Twp, Pa. The family farm was left at his death to his youngest son James (the 3 daus had m, & of the other 3 sons, 1 had d & the eldest, Finley, had moved out of the area). In abt 1760 he m for 2nd time. 2 yrs earlier (& whether his 1st wife was still alive I don't know) he confessed to taking "the undue liberty of singing idle songs along with a co that was engaged in that exercise." He survived both his wives, so that no mention of either is made in his will, & there is a great deal of confusion & some controversy abt their identities. See the case made (with a good history of the problem also) by Phyllis McGrew Walklet. He m twice. He m Mary Dicks in Holy Trinity Ch, (old Swede's), Wilmington, De, 25 MAR 1735. Mary was born about 1715. She was the d/o Nathan Dicks & Deborah Clark. He m Mary Ridgway (widow) in Pipe Creek Mm, MD, 11 DEC 1760. Mary was b abt 1710, Frederick Co, MD. Records of Holy Trinity (old Swedes) Ch, Wilmington, DE James Macgrau & Mary Dix - m March 25, 1735
(the next yr James bro Finley m Elizabeth Lauris in same church)
From Warrington Monthly Meeting Minutes 1747-1785 York Co., Pa page 120 11Oct 1760. James McGrew made application to this meeting for a certificate to Fairfax MM in order for m with Mary Ridgaway a memb of that meeting, John & John Blackburn are appointed to make the necessary inquiry & if nothing appears to obstruct provide & produce it to next meeting. The same request can be found in Fairfax meeting notes coming from Mary to m James. In it, it says that she is a widow with chdn. So Ridgeway was m name. I have not been able to find her maiden name anywhere, although I have looked at all Ridgeway ms I can find. It is quite possible that there was also a Mary Finley, however, if so, then I believe she d without chdn, since the m date I have seen posted was abt 1734 just 1 yr before the Mary Dix marriage.

[NI150330] According to most widely accepted tradition, Robert MCGREW came from County Tyrone, Ireland, PA, abt 1726/27, with his wife, Isabella, their 5 sons, & 2 gchdn, Archibald & Catherine, chdn of John. Isabella's surname is not kwn, but it has been suggested by a number of investigators of family history that it may have been FINLEY. There is a strong association of the name FINLEY with the MCGREW family. Robert & Isabella named their 2nd son, Finley, having named the 1st 1 John, which was probably the name of Robert's father. It is probable that this family came 1st to New Castle, DE, & then to Chester Co, PA. Chester Co at that time comprised a great area in SE PA. As western lands were opened up, through Blunston licenses, Robert & his sons moved westward, crossing the Susquehanna River, into what was Lancaster Co after 1729, York Co after 1749, & Adams Co after 1800. In 1732, Thomas PENN gave a commission to Samuel BLUNSTON of Lancaster Co Court, to grant licenses to sundry persons who wished to settle & take up land on the west side of the Susquehanna River. The family were believed to have been Episcopalian when they came to Amer. It has been said & generally accepted that 2 of the sons, Finley & James, m Quaker wives, & joined that faith. But it will appear later that both Finley & James were m in Old Swedes' Holy Trinity Ch, Wilmington, DE. Devout Quaker girls would not have been m in this ch. A girl from a Quaker family, as was Mary DICK, who was more interested in being m than in being a Quaker, might have. It seems more probable that, living in sparsely populated area, inhabited largely by Quaker people, these 2 families came under the influence of Quakers, & in due time, joined their ch. In 1746, Finley along with a friend & neighbor, "requested to come under the care of Friends" & to join the Sadsbury Monthly Meeting. Soon after their m in 1735, James & Mary went to VA, settling among friends in vicinity of Hopewell, who were mostly Friends or Quakers. In time, they joined the Hopewell Monthly Meeting. The History of Washington Co, PA, in an account of Finley MCGREW, states that Robert & Isabella were both bur in Chestnut Hill Bur Grounds in what is now Adams Co, PA. The dates of their deaths have not been found. Samuel MCGREW stated that his gparents (Finley & Elizabeth LAURIS MCGREW) & his ggparents (Robert & Isabella MCGREW) settled in vicinity of Heidlersburg, PA, Adams Co, some 12 mis NE of Gettysburg. Earle MCGREW stated that they settled in the vicinity of Petersburg, 20 mis NE of Gettysburg. Petersburg is now called Dillsburg. Reverend Henry Edwin MCGREW confirmed that the old farm where the MCGREWS 1st settled, was near Petersburg, 8 mis from Heidlersburg & some 20 mis NE of Gettysburg. Chestnut Hill Burying Grounds is some 2 mis W of Heidlersburg, PA. W from Heidlersburg on State Rd 234, for perhaps a mi, crossed a hard-surfaced rd, & a quarter of a mi further, come to a stone rd going N. Abt half-mi N on this rd, there was a sharp right turn. In the bend at this turn, was the Chestnut Hill Burying Ground. It looked as if it had not been either used or cared for in a century. There were no identifiable stones or markers. The area was a veritable thicket. But here were bur Robert & Isabella MCGREW & their son, John, a matter of, or nearly 200 yrs ago. John d in 1775. Robert & Isabella, no doubt earlier. Back down the rd a little way, I stopped at a farmhouse that was being remodeled by a young man, Rollin WOLFE, who had recently bought it. He showed me a handful of old deeds to the farm, which he had received from the previous owner. The top one was deed transferring the title from James A. & Jane MCGREW at the time they were contemplating moving to Westmoreland Co. James A. was s/o Finley & gson of Robert & Isabella. The deed mentioned that James had received an interest in the farm from his father, & had bought the interests of the other heirs. In his will, Finley, the father of James, had given half-ac of his farm as a graveyard. This was most likely the family bur plot, & probably the one that became kwn as The Chestnut Hill Bur Grounds. There was no evidence of their having been a ch at this location. Nearby was a bldg which had been the Chestnut Hill School.
Relationship: 6th ggparents, Robert & Isabella Finley McGrew. Comment: Graham: The family was an off-shoot of the Clan Macgregor which was a distinct clan in the Scottish Highlands as early as 1296. The family McGrew moved from Scotland to Ireland when they refused to fight and they were ordered to take another name. Most settled in County Tyrone.
Residences: The family of Isabella & Robert settled near Petersburg (now Dillsburg) in Adams Co., 3 miles NE of Millersburg (?) & 20 miles north of Gettysburg.
Comment: Hathaway says best source of materials on early family is W. A. K. Johnston's Clan Histories & the Clan Macgregor: The nameless Clan by W. R. Kermack (1953, Edina Works, Edinburgh Scotland). The listings of the families in the Clan include the name McGrewer which was shortened to McGrew when the families moved to Ireland. "The MacGregors were a hardy lot & resented having their lands taken by the King, & when they rose in rebellion he ordered the clan disbanded and banished & the name not to be spoken in Scotland again. This went on for some time, & eventually some lands were restored, but in the meantime many had been driven out & the clan scattered. The Clan is of Royal descent. The genealogy in the Dean's Book by Duncan is stated to have been written in 1512, & to have been taken " from the book of the genealogies of the Kigs." It traces the descent through Hugh of Urchy from Alpin, who ruled about 787, the father of Kenneth, "High King of Scotland. The suppression of the name was annulled by Parliament in 1774, but that of course, was after our McGrews were settled over here. At the time of the suppression of the clan many young children were taken to Ireland also at about that time England sent many of the hardy Scots to Ireland to control the Irish. the Scots were not happy in Ireland & after a generation or two emigrated to America. Where, under Penn's rules, they could have freedom of religion. In the family records, we know that Robert McGrew & wife Isabella came from County Tyrone, Ireland 1726/ 1727 & that when Robert arrived he was wearing a Blue Scotch bonnet or Glengary Cap". Residences: Family is originally from Scots Highlands near Anstruther, County Fife on the Firth of Fourth, 15 miles Southeast of Cupar, according to Thomas Dixon Graham.
Comment: Legend says that King Edward banished MacGregor's because he believed they were "too patriotic for the safety of his throne."
