Each year the family would gather in Okarche, OK to celebrate their mother's birthday and then to help with the harvest. On Aug 16, 1926, "Pete" Hommertzheim, Marie (Gassen) Hommertzheim's son, went with his Uncle Matt Gassen to take a horse drawn wagon of wheat to Kingfisher, OK.; while Lawrence, Matt's son, and his cousin "Hauns", Pete's brother, went swimming. While on the way to Kingfisher, Pete says his Uncle Matt became very solemn and stopped talking, not even responding when Pete would speak to him; shortly after this, one of Matt's daughters caught up with them in a car and told them Lawrence had drowned; Matt responded, "I know."
