"They immigrated in 1871 and went into business in Hoboken, New Jersey. They ran a bakery and root beer works, or brewery. The people who worked for them were not very honest and in less that one year they were nearly broke. Family hearsay says, Margaretta saw what was happening and managed to save $3000 by sewing it in her belt."
"In 1872, they went to Minnesota, bought 80 acres and raised potatoes. There they stayed until 1876, when they sold out and moved to Sedgwick county, Kansas. When they arrived in Wichita, a man named William Meice took them to the Germania community that is now St. Mark. According to a family tradition story, told by members of the Giefer family, the homesteaders took turns getting supplies for the trading post, hauling goods from Wichita by ox-team and wagon. There was no bridge over the big slough west of Wichita, so when water was high, they would shoulder-carry the supplies over and swim the team and wagon across."
