There is a discrepancy of dates for some of the children of Solomon and Nancy (Broughton) Mitchell which is explained in the following statement of John Mitchell (4 Mar 1846)
" --- As to the family register now before the department and which as I understand has been rejected as testimoney in the case of Mrs. Mitchell, I have to say that it was made by the special order and request of the said Solomon & Nancy Mitchell upward of forty years ago, and that they always relied upon its correctness until after the death of the said Solomon Mitchell, when the said Nancy Mitchell conceived that there was a mistake made in registering some of the childrens ages, which the said Nancy Mitchell states in her declaration made in July 1845, previous to that, it was always considered correct. ----- . As to the retracing of the figures of the family register now before the department with pen and ink, I have to say that the said Solomon Mithell could not write and consequently knew but little about figures. He had the figures retraced from the fact that the ink had faded to some extent and his only object was to make the dates more plain and perceptible, and I am certain the dates were not altered so as make them appear different from the original."

Solomon Mitchell applied for a pension for his service in the Revolutionary War.
Declaration in order to obtain the benefit of an act of Congress passed June the 7th 1832.
State of Tennessee. Hawkins County.
"On this 7th day of September 1833 personally appeared before me Lewis Mitchell one of the acting Justices of the Peace for the county of Hawkins in the State of Tennessee. Solomon Mitchell, a resident of the county of Hawkins and State of Tennessee, aged seventy three years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on his oath make the following declaration."
" I entered the service of the United States in 1777 under the command of Francis Logan as a private. I was then living in the State of South Carolina. I volunteered myself and went in search of some tories that were imbodied in Edgefield County on Edisto river. We took three tories prisoners and returned home. I entered the service some time in March and was gone about six days. The tories were very troublesome in the State where I lived and men were called out frequently for no certain time but would take a range after them and return home and be in readyness to go at any call. I received no discharge when I returned home. My next tour I went as a private horseman. I volunteered myself under Capt. William Freeman. The regiment was commanded by Col. Andrew Pickens. We redivooed in Abbeville County in the state of South Carolina on Long Cain Creek and marched against the Indians in the State of Georgia. We went between the waters of Oconio River and on to Nails Fort. We came on to Hinds Fort and from thence home. I entered this tour of service in first November 1777 and was gone one month but received no discharge. I was called on again in the Spring of 1778 and went under the command of Capt. John Irvine who was ordered by GeneralWilliamson to guard some prisoners that was taken at the battle of Kettle Creek and take them to the main headquarters of the army that lay on Savannah river below Augusta. we ware gone ten days. In the same Spring after I returned home I was called on again and went under the command of William Freeman as Capt. and Charles Hind as Lieutenant who was ordered by General Williamson to march to Ninety-Six in South Carolina and guard the jail where there ware some prisoners. we ware stationed there one month when we ware relieved and I returned home. In the year 1779 first of Aprile, I volunteered myself again asa private under the command of Capt. William Freeman (I was yet living in Abbeville County, South Carolina). Our forces was commanded by General Lincoln, Major Davie, Andrew Pickens and other officers. We marched on through a small town called Dorchester fom thence near Charlestown where we met with the British under the command of General Provost at a place called Stones Ferry where there was an action took place and on the American side, Major Davie was wounded and Capt. Richard Dogged killed. We went on from there to a place called Blueford in said State and from thence home. We ware gone three months. I received no discharge upon my return. In 1780 in the first of Oct. I volunteered myself again under Capt George Dooley in the State of Georgia, the troops ware commanded by General Clark. We marched on to Augusta in Georgia where we took possession of the town and took Col. Brown and his Regiment prisoners, also Col. Greyson and body of tories. I then was dismissed and returned home again being gone fourteen days, the second time under Dooley. In 1781 in Nov I volunteered myself again under Capt Calhoon. Our head officer was General Pickens. We ware gone about two weeks, scouting after tories at a place called Bull Swamp in the State of South Carolina. I returned home and was never out any more. I served to the best of my knowledge under Capt. Logan, six days, Capt. Freeman, one month, under Capt. Freeman a third time three months, ulnder Capt. Dooley, fourteen days, under Dooley a second time fourteen days and under Capt. Calhoon, two weeks for which service I claim a pension. I have no documentary evidence of my service nor can I procure any one who can testify of it. I hereby reliquish every claim to a pension or annunity whatever except the present and declare my name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State."
Sworn to before me the day and date before mentioned.

My comment; if the above is true, then how was an exact birth date entered in the family bible???

Nancy (Broughton) Mitchell's application for Widow's Pension, based on Solomon's service in the Revolutionary War; applied for in Hawkins County, Tennessee; 19 July 1845.
"On this nineteenth day of July, one thousand eight hundred and forty five personally appeared before me, Robert Rogers, a Justice of the Peace in and for said County, Nancy Mitchell, a resident of the county and state afoesaid, aged eighty three years, who being first duly sworn according to law doth on her oath make the following Declaration in order to obtain the benefit --- that she is the widow of Solomon Mitchell who was a private of the militia in the war of the Revolution, for which he drew a pension at the rate of $23.33 pr. annum. For particulars of his service, she refers the Department to his Declaration and papers now on file in the War Department.
She further declares that she was married to the said Solomon Mitchell in Abbeville District in the State of South Carolina in the month of May, seventeen hundred and eighty seven. That her husband the aforesaid Solomon Mitchell died on the 27th day of January in the year eighteen hundred and thirty nine, that she was not married to him prior to his leaving the service, but the marriage took place previous to the first of January seventeen hundred and ninety four, viz., at the time stated. She further states that she was married to the aforesaid Solomon Mitchell at the time stated; by George Anderson, a Justice of the Peace who lived in Laurens District in the state of South Carolina. That she was married at the house of John Simms, in presence of said Simms, his wife Ann, and his brother George, and took dinner at the house of Nathan Simms in company with the aforesaid Anderson, Esq.. John, and George Simms and their sister Sarah went with her and her husband to her mother-in-law's, Taner Mitchell, who was the widow of Robert Mitchell, that they lived in Abbeville District until the fall of 1794, at which time they had the following named children, to wit: Stephen, born December 25th, 1788; Rebecca, born Novenber 26th, 1789; Lewis, born November 24th,1791; Greenberry, born December 28th, 1793 -- that they then removed in the fall of 1794, as stated, into Jefferson County, State of Tennesee, where Jessee was born May 16th, 1796, thence into Hawkins County, where she now resides, where Polly was born April 4th, 1798; Robert, January 18th, 1801; Morris, July 7, 1803; Nancy, October 29th, 1804; Richard, July 18th, 1806; Susan, May 18, 1808 and Elizaberh, October 6, 1810. That she has detailed particulars in order to satisfy the Department that she was married at the time stated and for the reason that she knows of no record or witness by whom she could prove her marriage. She further states that she now has a record in her possession, purporting to be a family record of her childrens ages which she finds incorrect, she therefore declines offering it as testimoney, that it however shows that three of her children were born prior to the 1st of January 1794 where it should be foour, and the only evidence of the marriage she is able to procure is herewith submitted.
Attest. John Day and J.Mitchell.
Nancy Mitchell (her mark);

! Statement made by John Mitchell, in support of Nancy's widow application;
State of Tennesssee, Hawkins County:
Be it known that on the 4th day of March 1846, before me Howel Brewer, a Justice of the Peace in and for the County of Hawkins and State of Tennessee, personally appeared John Mitchell, Esq., a resident of the county and State aforesaid aged sixty years the 11th instant, who being duly sworn according to law, doth on his oath, make the following statement relative to Nancy Mitchell of the county aforesaid, now and applicant for a pension, and widow of Solomon Mitchell, decd, late a revolutionary pensioner of the United States, to wit, - Being called on to make a statement relative to the record of the childrens ages of the children of the said Solomon and Nancy Mitchell, I will first state that I am a near relation to the said Solomon and Nancy Mitchell, and when quite young, was placed under their care and protection in Abbeville District, South Carolina and was raised up to manhood by them in their family. When the said Solomon Mitchell and Nancy his wife emigrated to Tennessee, which was upwards of fifty years ago, I accompanied the family. They first settled in Jefferson County, Tenn., but a short time thereafter they moved and settled in Hawkins County, where the said Solomon Mitchell died on the 27th day of January 1839. He was a revolutionary pensioner until he died, and the said Nancy Mitchell is his widow, they always lived together as man and wife, and I never heard the legality of their marriage disputed, which marriage, as I have always understood, took place in Abbeyville District in the State of South Carolina some time prior to the 1st of January 1794. They must have been married prior to that date, from the fact that my age stands recorded March 11th 1786 and I was always said to be by the said Solomon and Nancy Mitchell more than three years older than their oldest daughter Rebecca who according to the family register was born in 1790, and I have always understood that they had a son called Stephen born prior to the birth of Rebecca, who died when quite young. As to the family register now before the department and which as I understand has been rejected as testimoney in the case of Mrs. Owing to the emigration of some of their children, Mrs. Mitchell lives with me and has for some years and probably may live with me as long as she lives, her husband Solomon Mitchell died at my house. As to the retracing of the figures of the family register now before the department with pen and ink, I have to say that the said Solomon Mithell could not write and consequently knew but little about figures. He had the figures retraced from the fact that the ink had faded to some extent and his only object was to make the dates more plain and perceptible, and I am certain the dates were not altered so as make them appear different from the original.

In the obituary of Nancy Elizabeth (Spainhour) Cave, it states that Elijah Spainhour's sister, Rebecca, married Daniel Spainhour and that they "lived and died in Gentry county, (MO)"; however, in the 1850 census for Jackson county, Missouri, there are two Rebecca Spainhour's shown in the hh of Elijah. The first, no doubt his wife, is shown as age 48; the second is listed as age 49, this could possibly be his sister Rebecca, indicating that her husband might have died by this time; she is also listed as being blind; she is not in the hh in the 1860 census.
