Observations (from Jo) are imbedded in double parens;
"I have pieced together a rough history of Archibald, but I'm not sure how accurate it is.
I present it here in the hopes that you will correct me where you have more solid facts.
Much of what I will describe here is from my Grandmother, Floye Ellen.
I believe she had accurate info, as she was the granddaughter of Archibald, and knew him
personally. However, I was about 15 years old when Floye Ellen passed away (she was living
with us in Abilene at the time), so I'm not sure how good MY memory is;
"Archibald serviced in the civil war, in the army, and joined from Missouri,
along with his brother Richard T. (R.T.). During the war Archibald was wounded, and R.T.
saved his life (this might explain the reason he was crippled). After the war Archibald
went east,
((He went to Arkansas and in 1882 was given 80 acres of land in Union County
for his service in the war. See land grant document from Union County))
and R.T. settled in Collin County, marrying Abigail Jane Short, the daughter of Jesse Short.
((I wonder if this is why my Uncle Choyce Clark, son of Sarah P Mitchell, is called Shorty.))
Jesse had moved his family from Missouri to Collin County in about 1852. He owned a section of land (640 ac) in that county, and also had land holdings and horses in Denton
county, and I think Wise county. I have assumed that Jesse and his family came from the
same county that the Mitchells are from, and that the Mitchells and Shorts knew each other
there, hence the marriage of R.T. and Abigail.
While there Archibald meet a young (about 12 years old) girld named Eliza Williamson. According to my grandmother, Eliza and her family came from overseas, but I don't know what country of origin, or what port they landed at.
Her father, John William, seems to be very wealthy, because he acquired a plantation
somewhere in the south.
((I was told that Eliza was born in Alabama but in all my searches I never found anything.))
The family originally consisted of 8 members, but the wife and all the children except for Eliza and her brother John were killed by cholera during the journey. BTW, my grandmother must have met Eliza's brother at some point, because she referred to him as Uncle John.
When the Civil War broke out John Sr went off to fight, putting his family and plantation
in the care of a Methodist Minister. John was never heard of again. Eliza was not treated
well by the Minister, and was apparently unhappy. Sometime after the war Archibald comes
on the scene, and gets the job of making barrels. Somehow he and Eliza meet, and Eliza
spends considerable time holding the barrel staves for Archibald.
Eliza (again about 12 years old at this time) is in love with another young man. She
receives a letter from the young man, but cannot read it, and asks Archibald if he would
read it to her (Archibald is about 28 years old at this time). Archibald
loves Eliza, so as he "reads" the letter he makes up a story that the young man does not
love Eliza.
Because of this and Eliza's dislike of the Minister, they decide to elope.
They did not have many possessions, or the left in a hurry, because my grandmother said
they slept in their wedding cloths. It appears that they took one or two of the slaves with them.
Some time later they show up in Arkansas, although I don't think right away. Floye Ellen
reported that the daughters were named after the states they were born in, so you can track
a little of their movement according to that.
Thanks to Jo Ann we have solid proof that they had a homestead in Arkansas. However,
trouble ensued, and Archibald had to flee. The story is very sketchy, but it seems that
Archibald killed someone over a dispute, possibly over a slave, or a suite, or he killed a
slave, etc.
((At the time of the incident there were no more slaves. But there were a lot of freed slaves roaming around trying to find a life. From what I heard from my uncle some of the freed slaves were really obnoxious and one paticular black freeman crossed Grandpa's path too many times. He was stealing things from Grandpa so Grandpa shot him. It was supposed to teach the freeman a lesson but unfortunately he died.))
I think he fled and moved back to Missouri for about 6 months, and then he moved to Collin County, where his brother R.T. was living. My grandmother said that oil was later found on Archibald's homestead.
Archibald appears to have lived the remainder of his life in Collin County. He purchased
60 acres of land there from Abigail Jane Short Mitchell and her family after the passing of
Jesse Short. He lived on that property until his death. My grandmother and her husband,
William Arthur Nevil, purchased the 60 acres in 1928 from the surviving children. The plot
of land is still in the family, and one of William and Floye Nevil's sons, Sherman, still lives there.
R.T. moved to Celina, and was a well-known physician there. He was Collin County
commissioner in the 1890's. His family may still live in Celina, as one of his sons became
a physican there also, if I recall correctly.
I hope that you will correct my "facts" if you can. Archibald was a very
interesting individual, and I look forward to meeting him some day."
You cousin,
Daris Nevil,
My roots are from Collin County too!

" -- my ggrandfather,Isaac Newton was 14, he was out in the yard and a union soldier rode by on horseback. He told Isaac Newton to report to Newtonia in the morning or he would be shot where he stood. As soon as the soldier was out of sight he mounted up and rode to Arkansas where he joined the Confederates. Their rations were short, and they were hungry, they came on a nest of rattlesnakes. The guys butchered the snakes and cooked them. Isaac Newton said he was really hungry, but couldn't make himself eat the snakes.
"To the day he died he would not wear the color blue. My grandmother said the whole
family really had to search to find grey pants and shirts for him." ;
