James Stewart

(1790 - 1837)

James Stewart was the first son of William and Jemima. He was born on February 28, 1790. James and Mary (Polly) Carter married about 1812. James and Polly had six additional children after William H.. They were Jemima, Dale Carter, Elisha W. , Harmon/Henry and Catherine.

James was a millwright and was said to have built a mill for Harry Carter, later known as Riggs mill. The Scott County Deed Book 2-40 notes on "19 Aug 1824, Thomas M. and Matilda Carter to James Stewart, for $225, 84 acres in Rye Cove ... corner to William Dorton... corner to Harry Carter... to the lower Marriage Spring, cornering in the spring thence down the spring branch... to Nash's land."

James died on September 12, 1837 and Mary on January 18, 1882, both in Scott County, VA. James and Polly are both buried at the Taylor/Carter Cemetery in Clinchport.
