     Mary Ann Hawley was born on 14 June 1808 in Shaftsbury, Bennington, Vermont.^2,3,1,4 She was the daughter of William Hawley and Philura (Unknown).¹ Mary Ann Hawley attended the Methodist Church.⁵
     On 21 January 1827, Mary Ann Hawley married Daniel Conrad, son of Johannes "John" Conrad and Catherine Foote, in Hinsdale, Cattaraugus County, New York.^2,6,7 She worked sunup to sundown spinning for her family and others. She earned fifty cents a week and saved enough to buy her mother a set of blue and white dishes. Some of the set has been passed down through the generations.⁸
