     Viola Hawley was born in 1853 Cattaraugus, New York.1,2 She was the daughter of Norman Hawley and Elizabeth Ann "Betsey" Moyer.1
     Viola Hawley appeared on the 1855 State Census of in Franklinville, Cattaraugus County, New York in the household of her parents, Norman Hawley and Elizabeth Ann Hawley.2
     Viola Hawley appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Ischua, Cattaraugus, New York in the household of her parents, Norman Hawley and Elizabeth Ann Hawley.1
     Viola Hawley appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Winneconne, Winnebago, Wisconsin, in the household of her parents, Norman Hawley and Elizabeth Ann Hawley.3
     Viola Hawley appeared on the 1870 Federal Census of Irvington, Kossuth, Iowa, in the household of Elizabeth Ann "Betsey" Moyer.4
     On 28 December 1873, Viola Hawley married Camp Edward Ellis in Winneconne, Winnebago County, Wisconsin.5
     Viola Ellis appeared on the 1880 Federal Census of Winneconne, Winnebago, Wisconsin in the household of her parents, Norman Hawley and Elizabeth Ann Hawley, and her children.6
     Viola Ellis appeared on the 1900 Federal Census of Crawford, Dawes, Nebraska, enumerated 7 June 1900, reporting Viola as a widow.. Her children Jenney, Ida Anna, Charles E. and Helen B. were listed as living with her.7
     Viola Ellis appeared on the 1910 Federal Census of Chadron, Dawes, Nebraska, in the household of Lindley W. Gordon and Jenney Gordon, her daughter.8

     William Hawley was born circa 1786 Rensselaer County, New York.1,2,3 He has also been reported as being born circa 1786 in Vermont.4
     William married Philura (Unknown) circa 1806 in Vermont, the location is based on the birthplace of son Benjamin.3 William Hawley, Daniel Conrad, Johannes "John" Conrad, Joseph Conrad, Jacob Linderman and Elisha Terry were considered pioneers in Ischua, Cattaraugus, New York. William came from Cortland County, New York; the area was still known as Hillsdale.5
In 1827, William Hawley and Daniel Conrad were found on the list of Jurors in Hinsdale, Cattaraugus, New York. Also included on the list were John Conrad, Johan Peter Frantz and Jacob Linderman.6
In October 1828, William Hawley wasfound on the General Session list of Jurors in Cattaraugus County, New York.7
     William Hawley was listed as the head of a family on the 1830 U.S. Federal Census enumerated in Hinsdale, Cattaraugus, New York. Based on ages, it is possible the following were also living in the household, Norman Hawley, a white male, age ten to fourteen years old, Benjamin Hawley, a white male, age twenty to twenty-nine years old, Dollie Ann Hawley, a white female, age five to nine years old, Philura Hawley, a white female, age forty to forty-nine years old, also enumerated in the household is 1 unknown male under 5 years, 1 unknown male 10 to 14 years and 1 unknown females 20 to 29 years Living near William was Daniel Conrad.8
On 1 February 1832, a court case was filed in Cattaraugus County, New York, naming William Hawley. The suit ask that William be removed as the Justice of Peace..9
On 23 June 1832, a trial was held in Cattaraugus County, New York, with William Hawley appearing. The complaint is for Malpractice as a Justice of the Peace. The complaint was Dismissed.. The witnesses for the Prosecution were Johan Peter Frantz and Daniel Conrad.9 On the 1835 census , William Hawley was listed as the head of the family living in Hinsdale, Cattaraugus, New York. With 47 acres of improved land. Listed in the household are 5 males; William age about 45 years, Benjamin age 28, Norman age 19, 2 Unknown males. Of the 5 males there was 1 male subject to military duty (probably Benjamin), and 2 males eligible to vote (William and Benjamin).
Listed in the household are 3 females; Philura age under 45 years, Dollie age 11, Philura age 13. Of the 3 females there were 1 married female under 45 yrs (Philura) and 2 unmarried females under 16 yrs (Dollie and Philura).
Also listed in the census is: Thomas Wheellock (probably Whitlock), Nicholas Linderman, Caleb Barber, Jacob Linderman, Jas. Conrad, Thaddius Farwell, Andrew Raub and Daniel Conrad (Son-in-law).10
On 3 February 1837, a trial was held in Cattaraugus County, New York, with William Hawley appearing. On a motion of Fox & Harmon, Plantiffs Attorneys a complaint was filed on behalf of Truman B. Tripp. A Jury was ordered to be impanelled and to proceed to trial. The Jurors were sworn..9 The case against William was dismissed with costs on 6 February 1837 in Cattaraugus County, New York.9
     After 1839, William Hawley married Mary (Unknown) in, based on death of Philura..1 William Hawley appeared on the census of 1845 in Hinsdale, Cattaraugus, New York.11
     William Hawley and Mary Hawley appeared on the 1850 Federal Census Hinsdale, Cattaraugus, New York, enumerated 5 August 1850, reporting his occupation as a farmer.12
     William Hawley and Mary Hawley appeared on the 1855 State Census Hinsdale, Cattaraugus, New York, enumerated 14 June 1855, reporting the family as living in a log house with a value of $20. William was a farmer who had owned land and been living in Hinsdale for 30 years..13,14
     William Hawley appeared on the 1860 Federal Census of Humphrey, Cattaraugus, New York, enumerated 28 July 1860. His children Benjamin and Dollie Ann were listed as living with him, as well as her son, David Lytle Raub.4
     William Hawley died after 28 July 1860 in Cattaraugus County, New York. Based on 1860 Census.13,14

(13 Oct 2015) Determined that the land transaction was actually William Hadley not Hawley.15

Shaftsbury, Bennington, Vermont, 53 acres and 4 tons of hay was seized and sold for non payment of judgement that had been awarded to Samuel Niles, White Creek, Washington County, New York. (5 Aug 2005 I am not sure that this is our William. However, it could explain why he would have left Vermont for New York.)1
