George Hollingsworth was born on 7 April 1712 Cecil County, Maryland.1 He was the son of Abraham Hollingsworth and Ann Robinson.
On 19 December 1734, George Hollingsworth married Hannah Mc Kay Mc Coy, daughter of Robert Mc Kay Mc Coy, at Nottingham Monthly Meeting in Opecken Colony, Frederick County, Virginia, Marriage Place: at the house of Isaac Parkins of ye affsd place...2,3 Hopewell Friends History, pt. 1, p.187-188
In the years 1754-55 a determined effort was made by the colonial government to force Friends to bear arms against the French and Indians, and upon their steady refusal some of them were beaten and imprisoned. The records of Frederick County show that in September, 1754, the following Friends, Joseph Roberts, Edward Tyler, Dennis Bond, James Henry, Thomas Howell, Benjamin Kelley, Henry Hampton, and James Welch, were imprisoned in the county jail at Winchester, where they were kept for over a year. On one occasion, Hopewell Friends held a meeting beneath the jail windows until dispersed by soldiers who seized one of them, George Hollingsworth, and threw him into prison. Upon his being brought to trial he was fined xxx5 Sterling for "disorderly meeting & assembling." Friends in eastern Virginia waited upon Governor Dinwiddie at Williamsburg and finally secured the release of their brethren in Winchester.

In 1762 George sold all his property near Winchester, Virginia, and he and all his family except his son Robert and his family, went to South Carolina, and then to the West; M. (secondly) Jane ELWELL.

Genealogist Harry Hollingsworth, Editor of Hollingsworth Register. ref: 330, p. 6

25 Jul 1998 After several years of believing that George's second wife was Jane Elwell, proof has been brought forward showing that it was, in fact, Jane Carter. In view of the many publications showing "Elwell", one has to wonder if Jane Carter first married a "Mr. Elwell " and then, secondly, married George Hollingsworth, and of course at that time her name was Jane Elwell. This area needs more research . The basic document of proof for Jane Carter was: Petition to Divide Land, Newcastle Orphans Court, Newcastle Co., DE., 23 Nov 1750, as shown on FHL film No. 6546. In ref: 53, p. 14, on 16 Apr 1768, it is noted that 3 different "Elwell's" and 2 differnet "Hollingsworth's " served at the same time at a coroner's inquest, showing that Elwell 's and Hollingsworth's were living close together in NC at the time in question.
George Hollingsworth died circa 1786 in Laurens County, South Carolina.
